Apparently that newspaper trick is some really old school stuff. A book called "Illustrated Hints for Health and Strength for Busy People", written by Adrian Peter Schmidt, features an exercise where you squeeze paper balls in your fists repeatedly to gain grip strength and obviously you'd have to crumple the paper first. And this book was published in 1901! I found out about this from an Art of Manliness article called "Odd Exercises for Physical Vigor: An Oldtime Strongman’s 15-Minute Morning Routine".
Yeah well makes me wonder how old the exercise really is and who thought of it first. Who knows maybe it's been around as long as news papers themselves and has been since passed around among people interested in strength training!
Extremely solid advice. As a rock climber, I also highly recommend rice bucket workouts. There's a ton of good stuff all over youtube, just search for it. Forearms respond best to high volume, and the rice bucket gives you just that (it's why farmers walks work so well). Also most importantly it works the entire forearm, including the often neglected extensor muscles, to give you a more balanced overall forearm.
I go to a pretty regular gym, it has good equipment though...which no one uses except me. I do farmers walks all the time there and man, the looks I get from the guys curling, "Bro should do some proper training..he should hit the streets if he wants to walk around". hah
@@BlueDemon77 Same here, doing Farmer Walks with every workout. I seem to be the only one who does it. I don't give a fck, it works my grip strength (it is what gives first), my traps, triceps etc. Also ending every workout doing face-pulls (Jeff will be happy).
You do get some strange looks ... though when people see the weight on the end of the dumbbell they tend to quiet down a bit. Must say it didn't take long for my traps to enlarge doing walks, even if grip is what goes first.
As a climber-turned-weightlifter, this video was great. Solid stuff, as always. Keep up the good work dude. PS: You can make your own grenades with softballs and bolts. I've got a set at home that I've been using forever, and even if you try to cheat with the laces you're still going to fry your forearms.
Great video and tips. As a side note, my grandfather was a baker and from years of kneading dough with his bare hands his grip strength was incredible. He was also very strong from lifting heavy sacks of flour and sugar throughout the day , everyday. Seriously though, even at the age of 70+ he could easily crush your hand in a handshake and not even know he was doing it. jajaja.
another good way to use the newspaper to add grip strength is to start a fire with the crumpled paper, add coal or coke and start blacksmithing. the hammers may only weigh a couple of pounds but will humble you quickly. plus you will gain a skill and make cool stuff.
Fill a bucket with water and put a towel in it. Take the wet towel and wring out the water by squeezing and twisting, repeat until you can't do it anymore. Put the effort into it and your hands and forearms will definitely let you know! Thanks for all you do Brian, love the videos.
Good stuff! Lately, every time I watch one of your videos your subs have gone up by like 1,000 from the day or two before. Looks like you're going to hit 20,000 subs by the end of the week...congrats Brian!
finally got the chance to watch the video. Brian, you humor and banter is back better than ever! it was excellent to see you having fun in Cali and I will watch everything you put out, but it's great to have you front and center again, where you belong!
Brian great video love it ....i have great grip strenght and have a good move to add...put on dish washing gloves one size too small and work on opening up and extending hand fully open....this helps keep your hands from cramping up from all the crush work your hands get
Brian, thanks for the tip about using the Fat Gripz. I've been doing Farmers Walk with dumbbells for a few weeks now and have been making steady progress. Then, last week, I threw the Fat Gripz on the dumbells. Wow! My forearms were screaming at the end of the set. It was pretty awesome.
When I used to do a lot of metal scraping one of the items I used to scrap were lawn tractor batteries. Without ever putting much thought into it I would grab the top of the battery with my hand which would barely fit around it and lift it that way. one in each hand. Then I would walk it over to the trailer and place it in there. Yes it was hard to grip but I was being lazy and thought it would be a lot less walking to take two at a time like this. Never thought about it but I'm sure this was working grip strength and it did make my arms on fire after a while. This is just one example of things I would carry like this. Still do things like this today without thinking about it because my goal is how to carry the most per trip.
You are awesome. Your giant set linear programming is kicking my ass. Now I have to work on my grip strength. Thanks for killing me every morning before work!! Seriously.
I've found dead hangs as a finisher of every workout works really well plus gives a really nice post workout stretch. Easy enough to progress by adding weight as well
You're a beast! I just started lifting weights about an year ago and I'm a normal person with a desk job and have discovered my love for lifting. I won't be a competitor anytime in life but I just enjoy myself doing this. I don't know if much of your techniques help me as they look to target advanced power lifters but I do pick all the things you mention in your videos and love the way you put them. Thank you so much for your work while being busy preparing for your nationals. May you have best of the health for coming days and get stronger as you desire! You are a true inspiration for me. ~Good luck.
you just earned a subscriber....thank Mark Bell and Alan Thrall... you do a great job of explaining to the guys out there that are not 100% on board with you knowledge level ,,Great enunciation too
Since you're a martial artist, Brian, here's another idea. Start off with a bucket of sand, dive your fingers in it after spreading them apart then grip tight. (There's videos on it) and find a soft squishy ball to start with, I throughout class will squeeze my racket ball but I had to build up to it. It's something the guys at my dojo in shaolin kung fu told me about. One dude uses tennis balls, yikes. Dont want to have him grab me. Thanks for the video.
If you really want to improve your grip strength and you're also looking for a job start working for a moving company. After carrying dressers, mattresses, and boxes full of books for 8 hours a day all summer your grip strength will be legendary.
My current grip strength go-to is the DIY farmers handles I've made with buckets on the end for my bootcamps. Fill em either with bricks or water and watch people struggle haha. But they all love it!!
I have started doing sled pulls recently and have been using my imagination on the handles. I got a 13 ton shackle, looking for a 35 ton that'll weigh about 40 lbs. I will use a 20lb kettle bell for now. Using an awkward, wide, or heavy handle works well to burn out my grip as fast as my legs give out.
Crush strength (hand closed, BB, DB, Deadlift) Pinch strength (hand opened, Axle Deadlift) Finger strength ------------ *Traditional ways*: ditching straps for all or majority of sets. Equipment: grenade ball/grip, 2-in FatGripz, 3-in FatGripz, rolling thunder, Farmer's Walk implement.
brian, i noticed you didnt use straps while doing deadlifts at super training.. youre the man. my grip has went up from doing pull ups after watching your videos. you said to squeeze the hell out of the pull u[p bar and it makde a huge difference. focusing on squeezing while lifting instead of just lifting helped me out alot. ill do all the things in this vid also. keep it up man
Pretty good video, I picked up some things I didn't know, I'm not specifically into strong man but always want to try different lifting techniques for overall development, I subbed
very interesting/educationnal video, i love it. You style is also very fun(fade to black and white) and help to keep the pace. Some people video ends up like hearing someone reading the back of a cereal box and its really not your case. Good stuff :)
I have done 50% of these things and they definitely helped. I am going to try out the other ones I haven't tried over the coming months. Additionally something else I have done that worked probably even fast was just double overhand deadlifts. Go as heavy as you can with that grip then switch over to hook or mixed grip to finish and over time you find you are able to handle more and more weight with the double overhand grip.
Crushing newspapers must be an oldie. My friend used to do this 10-15 years back. He was keen in classic 1900-1950 strongman and bodybuilding stuff. Prolly got the idea from there.
For a farmer's walk alternative, what about the Ed Coen barbell hold with an olympic bar in each hand done in a rack - walk on the spot for those that don't have access to heavy dumbells or where gyms have no space and/are too busy to walk around with heavy dumbells.
I've done a 600lb trap bar farmers walk for a few feet without straps. Definitely tested my grip strength. Also like to use Captain of Crush Grippers to develop grip strength. I can close the 2.5 gripper for 17 reps and the number 2 gripper for over 20 reps. Since I got brutally strong on Captain of Crush grippers my grip is never a weakness for me. I eventually want to close the number 3 gripper and then for reps. Also what helped my grip are weighted chinups and pullups without straps or chalk
The quality of your content is getting crazy man ! I'm glad you're getting more and more subscribers ! Well deserved. I hope to see your channel blow up in the near future !
Currently punching myself in the face for not subbing when Alan mentioned your channel months ago. Also, another way to train finger strength - buy ten gallons of milk, hook each finger a round one, go for a walk. Used to do this for fun when I worked at starbucks and I didn't want to make two trips. Also, rock climbing is insane for building grip strength. My brother is a great climber and can double-overhand deadlift what I need to mix-grip.
Fantastic video. Didn't realize how much I would learn from another grip strength video. This definitely tops them all and learned so much great info. Love the channel :)
It might be a good idea to take a kettlebell and chain two more to it, or chain some barbell plates. This way you could get a 200lb/90kg farmer's walk implement. I do not do farmers walks (yet) but what works my grip very well are rows with a thick handle kettlebell with additional weight chained to it.
Great video with creative and interesting grip exercises . People under estimate how important hand and finger grip strength really is.. Strong hand grip enhances most if not all gym related exercises and good strong grip is related to the forearm which is invaluable to elderly people just doing the very basic everyday activities. My mother used to have this stiff but pliable ball that was putty like consistency and she squeezed it all the time, and if anyone in the house needed a jar of pickles opened she was the who they ask to do.
Newspaper ideal...too simple to be so brilliant of an idea. Thanks for sharing and i will add that in. I can do that in the house watching TV even--as long as the spouse is not watching her Bachelor series. you think the microphone did not like that noise, a crazy woman watching her Bachelor hearing that noise might cause me damage :)
I've been doing Farmer's Walks with 30 lb kettle bells.I bought the kettle bells at Walmart.ALways check, because some of the kettle bells have a thicker handle than others.Always buy the thick-handled ones.I do a Farmer's Walk of about 600-700 meters.#0 lbs. isn't that heavy until you walk 600 meters.By the time you finsh your hands will be screaming to let go.
A good method I found as a beginner was to use the hook grip on pull ups, and to then curl your body weight with your fingers. Heavy dumbell rows with hook grip is gonna make your grip strong also.
Hey Brian, you could also soak a wash cloth in water and use one hand to squeeze it dry, and I guess just repeat until you're tired, then switch hands.
Man, thanks for all these wicked vids! I'm a huge fan of the Farmers Walk too. My gym doesn't have the implements, and dumbells cap at 110. I started using a trap bar, and can load 4+ plates per side and seems to work ok.
Fat Gripz are what, $40 bucks and they don't decompose. Fantastic buy for the gym bag if you're toiling away in a regular ol' gym. Just now my fav use is throwing them on the heaviest (not very heavy at that) dumbbell in the gym and doing circus cleans or circus clean and presses, also pretending I'm Odd Haugen and picking up a heavy (not that heavy) dumbbell a bunch with the fat grip on. Or going back and forth medley style. Great stuff Brian, cheers.
I saw the newspaper trick in an Art of Manliness post about some vintage ways to build finger and grip strength. It is also in a couple of morning workout videos Brett has done on that site.
It is just that. It is 12" sphere that you do pull-ups from and I am hoping it increases my squeeze strength for stones. But man, they are the hares pull-ups you will ever do in your life!
Newspaper thing... learnt it from Bruce Lee (cannot remember which books, but there are several mentions throughout his writing), and it came in very handy for Judo training when I was 6yrs old (I was an odd child). 😅
Hahaha... I have been doing the newspaper fir 25 years my friend. After I was in an accident that shattered my wrist that was the exercise I was given for recover. You are right, best thing I ever did to rebuild my "hand shake"

Finally a reason to use the useless flyers I get! Awesome video Brian! Glad you made it home safe and sound
Thank you Chelsey!
A painful variation to the paper crumble is to take a wash cloth, wet it, take the same original hold slowly squeeze out all the water!
Hahaha this made me laugh!
Love the video! Don't know how to say your name but you just earned another loyal viewer!
Great tip man, thanks!
New to your channel and loving your humorous directions!
awesome video. first one I've ever watched of yours, and now because of a newspaper I'm hooked
Hahah that's awesome man, thanks!
Saw your channel from Alan thralls videos and i cant believe you only have 17k subs, keep it up and you are gonna be at 1 mill no time.
Man, that would be an absolute dream! i REALLy hope you are right!
Man, thanks for all these wicked vids! I'm a huge fan of the Farmers Walk too. My gym doesn't have the implements, and dumbells cap at 110. I started using a trap bar, and can load 4+ plates per side and seems to work ok.
Great video! Just the other day, I started doing farmers walks with plates to strengthen my grip. Was wondering if anybody else did those!
For cheap, homemade fat grips, wrap a washcloth around any bar. You can vary the number of wraps to mess with the size too
thanks brother Brian, I really need to work on my grip! love your videos, keep them coming!
That is awesome, thanks for watching them!
Absolutely agree man! Thank you!
Loving your videos Brian!! Keep it up brother!!
Favorited! Gonna start working my grip more because why not.
Hahah thanks man!
I have to do grip training tomorrow, I will try some of these. Very nice ideas. Great content!
Thanks so much for checking it out!
Been using hex-bar for farmer carries. Not as good as individual handles, but still get most of the benefit.
Absolutely man, that thing will definitely work you!
I saw the newspaper trick in an Art of Manliness post about some vintage ways to build finger and grip strength. It is also in a couple of morning workout videos Brett has done on that site.
Right on man, i had no idea!
Thanks so much for the info! I'm cheering for you to get back to yourself
awesome man hope you made tons of new friends out in Cali
I definitely did man. You guys over there are strong and everyone was super cool to me as the outsider!
Awesome video Brian! Something I also like to do is grab the leg of a chair and try to pick up the whole chair with one arm. Very old school exercise.
That is awesome man, i am going to try that! Thanks!
Brian Alsruhe no problem man. Question though, what is that big ball in your gym that you hang from with two hands?
It is just that. It is 12" sphere that you do pull-ups from and I am hoping it increases my squeeze strength for stones. But man, they are the hares pull-ups you will ever do in your life!
Brian Alsruhe that's awesome! I'm hoping to get into a arm wrestling competition someday I wonder if that would help
I don't see how it could hurt! But i don't know much about arm wrestling.
Another awesome video, really helpful stuff. Thanks for all your training advice
Sure thing, thanks for checking it out Helen!
Awesome. Thanks!
Yes!! Thank You for the tips!!! I've been needing to get my grip strength up!!
Glad it was helpful brother!
I'm really glad for you concerning the ratio thumbs up/number of views!
Not a bad one.
Thanks man, I just try to attract positive people. Seems to be working...some of the time! Hahaha
Good tips! Gyro balls work way good too!
Thanks man and someone else mentioned that as well!
The paper-trick works !!!! Thanks Brian for this vid! Lots of inspiration. I have work to do😉👊✌️
That is awesome brother, thank you!
Newspaper thing... learnt it from Bruce Lee (cannot remember which books, but there are several mentions throughout his writing), and it came in very handy for Judo training when I was 6yrs old (I was an odd child). 😅
Good stuff, love the newspaper suggestion....sometimes it's the simple things that work the best. Thanks
It works amazingly well man and thank you so much!
Hahaha... I have been doing the newspaper fir 25 years my friend. After I was in an accident that shattered my wrist that was the exercise I was given for recover. You are right, best thing I ever did to rebuild my "hand shake"
