  • It’s been nearly a decade since we have seen a sprinter win Milan San Remo. Johan, Lance and JB break down the race and great team work by alpecin-deceuninck, in particular a team effort by Mathieu Van Der Poel. Also, more insight in to Pogacar, his goals for the year and scoop on changing his training.

If you missed the SCOOPEs from Johan about Tadej Pogacar:
    - Changed to a new coach called Javier Sola
    - Current weight 65kg. Plans to reach 63kg for the Tour
    - Current FTP: 431w. Which is 6.58wkg. Lance said is too early for such a peak (he would be 5.5wkg at the time of Milano-Sanremo, couldnt follow any wheels in the race on the climbs)
    - Lans said that he had around 7wkg before each tour he won
    - Huge focus on TT in the training right now for him
    - The UAE team believes that he can reach Vingi if Pogi does certain numbers that they make as an objective.
    - In particular, 7.5wkg for 15min, 7wkg for 20min and 6.65wkg for 30+min

I get Lance’s point, but having listened to this podcast for years now, it’s laborious listening to him rant about this after every major race. It’s the same tale, told in the exact same way. We get that many of the racers of his time, with him at the helm, were jerks. I’m glad to see this generation celebrating one another’s accomplishments.

and on competitors being friendly with each other, i think a new wave of awareness has permeated--in my opinion, correctly--the sports/athletic world about mental health. i think increasingly happiness and fulfillment has been allocated outside professional achievements for people in general. we've seen a lot of mega achievers reach the end of their sports (or any field, for that matter) careers and then find themselves empty. it often looks like an extremely unhealthy position to find yourself in. personal growth and relationships to others are more enduring and, in fact, quite necessary in life. AAAAANNND it's not like they're not competing any more furiously or losing feels any less heartbreaking or infuriating (michael matthews yesterday, for instance, if you see his post race interview). and since all these heroes inspire the rest of us mortals, i can't see how there is anything negative about the example and precedent they're setting.

That theme of friendship x hate rivals. We all understand Lance. We all know what racing was like in his day. But today the world is different. And there is really a fatal difference between the approach of Americans and Europeans. Pogačar is a very special person. People in America don't get it. With them, it is quite common to smile at people we don't know at all, to have small talks with them, to ask them how they are doing, when we are not interested at all. This is completely different with the Slavs. When you act nice to others, it shows that you really care about them. Pogačar is an extremely nice person, an amazing superstar of cycling. All of us fans are excited about his approach. Lance can't understand this at all. He'S from different world.

Mohoric was interviewed pre-race by Eurosport and was asked if he was using any new innovative tech this year and he replied that they just tweaked his normal setup to optimize it for this race and then said something about getting the weight down as low as possible, which suggests to me he was more concerned with the expected UAE inferno going up Cipressa & Poggio than with gaining an edge on the Poggio descent. It almost feels that he is in part acknowledging that the cat is out of the bag when it comes to him launching on the descent or over the top of the Poggio, I.e., if he tries it again there’s no chance he’s not getting marked straight away. Witness MVDP do exactly that when Mohoric did go near the bottom.

I was at the start line in Pavia on Saturday morning for the Milan- San Remo race and can say Pavia is a beautiful and more intimate place for this race to start. The reason given in the press was due to lack of police resources available in Milan city, which is why it was moved to a Abbiategrasso least year for the same reason. These high profile monument races place a huge demand on Municipality resources but at the same time gives us the opportunity to see other beautiful places like Pavia.

Moser in 1984 had spent two months preparing for the hour record in Mexico with Dottor Ferrari... he was in good shape... the Alpecin team's tactics were centered on Philipsen from the first Km of the race... the second time Pogaçar tried to escape on Poggio, the only one who managed to follow him was MVDP... when Pogaçar sprinted the second time the pace was relatively slow... MVDP could have made the same MOVE as him but he didn't... they arrived at the top of the hill with the same advantage over the group that MVDP had last year... if MVDP cooperated they could reach the finish line (maybe with Pidcock)... the final sprint would have been a puzzle....

First of all using hate as fuel has always been more prevalent in US sports than in European sports.
Also Pogacar and Matthews are neighbours - and each others closest friends outside of cycling (they travel together to all races they both attend) - and Philipsen is a very close friend to both of them.
It would be odd to need to self-suggest "hate" towards your closest friends, in order to beat them in competition.

I think that Van der Poel lost the race when he wasn't glued to Pogacar's wheel on the Poggio because he had to close a massive gap, which he did very quickly and had he put in that effort while on Pogacar's wheel I think he'd gone right over the top just like he did last year. He was just out of position at the wrong moment. Also things change; people change. Who cares what the social politics of the peleton of years gone by. It was what it was and now it is what it is.

What I think Lance is trying to convey when he states he couldn't keep the wheel of the other leaders on the climbs approaching the finish line at Milan-San Remo is that he was not sufficiently transfused at that point in the season and it would be a few more months under his extra-curricular "regimen"until his EPO levels reached Tour volume.

At what point does a rider lose strength, endurance and power due to muscle wasting?
I smell osteoporosis in someone's future....... Love the guy though!
Lance: I think you were so appealing to cycling fans because you have/had a physique of some kind!
    LOVE the show......

Great analysis Lance. Pogacar was great but with 2 horrible teammates : Hirschi and Ulissi

When are we going to talk about the elephant in the room? Am I the only one who doesn’t think all of the fastest times ever recorded now are because of training methodology and aerodynamic bikes? Bread and water for the win 🥇

Name one occassion where two riders not of the same team refused to drop oneanother because they are friends? Did Mathieu drop Tadej in Glasgow? Did Tadej drop Mathieu in De Ronde van Vlaanderen? Did Mathieu bridge the gap between him and Tadej this MS? Yes. What are you harping on about. Nonsense.

I just have to ask, as it's never made sense to me, but what is a grown ass man thinking when he puts on a baseball cap backwards? Does anyone actually look better with one? Is there some functional aspect to it?

Feels a bit unfair to make Pogacars numbers and training goals public like this. Can't you get hold of Vingegaards, Evenepoels and Roglic's too?
PS I do not at all think the friendliness between the current riders affect their performance at all. Hatred can certainly be a powerful motivator, but there are other motivations (like wanting to become the best ever for example) that are not depending on personal feelings towards other people.

Their numbers for an hour are with 10 watts of each other. The difference is how they cope with myriad variables. Who can cope with the highest normalised power, in the warmest and highest conditions for the longest? No one is doing 7 watts per kilo at 2000m in week three. But they might be able to hold 6 watts per kilo for 40 minutes on the last climb of stage 19 after riding at 5.5 watts per kilo for the previous three climbs. I think the biggest problem for Pogacar is heat rather than his rivals finding out his FTP.

@@christianmatheron6444true, but to be honest, Pogi didn’t start to have problems with either the heat or consistency until Jonas showed up.

@@christianmatheron6444 Considering how meticulous Visma have analysed Pogacar's every meter on a bike, I'm sure they know all details about his numbers in various conditions better than himself. Certainly better than UAE ;) I do still think it's unfair (maybe not the best word) to make his numbers public in this way since he obviously does not want that. Most of the top riders don't want that. It's a bit like making medical records public. I don't like when leaked personal information obtained by shady means are made public. Especially not for only one targetted individual.
