- JB Hager, Johan Bruyneel, and Spencer Martin from the Beyond the Peloton Newsletter break down the recent flurry of racing, from Mathieu van der Poel’s seemingly unstoppable solo victory over his rival Wout van Aert on Friday at E3 Saxo Classic to Tadej Pogačar’s dominance to win four stages, plus the GC, at Volta Catalunya and Mads Pedersen impressive, and surprising, upset of Van der Poel today at Gent-Wevelgem. They discuss what we should take from Pogačar’s scorched-earth racing style, how the Van Aert/Van der Poel dynamic is shaping up in advance of the Tour of Flanders, why Lidl-Trek’s aggressive racing style has served them well so far, and could see them deliver more major Classics victories, and much more.

JB, just want to say I really appreciate your work putting these shows together. My way long overdue Thank you!!
Am I missing something??? MVDP WON E3 in the longest solo ever. That was a massive effort TWO DAYS AGO. 203 KM at race pace beating the entire peloton. And you three don't mention that was probably the reason MVDP didn't take Mads at the line??? What if MVDP hadn't done E3? My guess is he would have soloed based on his E3 performance.
Pedersen also was at E3
I agree but it has to be admitted that Lidl Trek did triangulate MVDP using Mads and Milan to work him over chasing down attacks before the duo of MVDP and Mads went off the front. Yes winning E3 must have tired him out before Gent.
it is being talked about around 55 min.
I think Gent-Wevelgem is a much different race than E3. The Paterberg-Kwaremont combo is a game changer, which tilted the advantage much more to MvdP. Gent-Wevelgem is more flat and shorter climbs, which gives a better chance to Mads than at E3.
I think E3 was more important for MvdP as a preparation for RVV, so it makes sense that would be his bigger effort.
Ghent is grinding race cancellara tripled e3, flanders, roubaix twice 2010, 2013 solo raids dominant and won e3 in 2011 solo was dominant animating rider of flanders and roubaix. Never won Ghent always favored Boonen and then sagan.
VDP loves the interval style of cobbled punchy climbs Ghent is flatter and always reduced bunch usually due to profile its more suited to Mads and Wout therefore. Likewise Flanders just suits Mathieu to ground like e3
I miss JB2 to hear more from Johan. Hearing more from him today was great!
Another good one, gentlemen. Thanks much.
If MVDP, wins today than everyone pegs MVDP for a Flanders win and the pressure mounts, MVDP comes in 2nd today and he now is 3rd favorite w no pressure. genius 😂
Great show.
To add to the Van Aert story: he himself said that he came out of the gutter at the side of the cobbles to try to advance and that is why he fell. Lack of specific cobbles training...?
Looking forward to Tuesday
Yes, all of Belgium is talking about Wout. Know who's happy, Remco, not talking about me this week.
I feel like Wout is focused more on altitude this year, perhaps with the aim of preparing for worlds, which will have an insane amount of climbing. Could also explain the (somewhat) drop in 'punchiness', but for anyone to challenge pogi in this year's worlds, it would need a lighter frame with strong climbing legs..
Van der poel is probably tired of sprinting against Danes 🇩🇰 😊
Mads Pedersen used his team well today, VDP had to work hard and Mads doesn’t loose many of these strong man sprints. If VDP doesn’t plant everyone on climbs at Flanders, we could see part II of this scenario. Bettiol is a strong candidate as well, and of course Wout.
Another boring Dane.....
@@WerdnaLiten thx 😉
Loved seeing Mads win and Milan is so impressive. Laporte is out of DDV and RVV and Hagenes is also out with a fractured nose so Visma is bit short on riders for this week.
Bring in Jonas to set tempo for a couple hours lol good training ride for him.
Compared to the depth of those Lanterne Rouge Nerds the Analysis here is rather superficial
Talking about MVP’s finish line salute. Take a look at the 84’ LA Olympic road race Alexi Grewal did it first and probably the best.
where can i beet on cycling races?
Peter Øxenberg Hansen is noted for the fastest time ever at the Coll de Rates. 18 years old and beat Vingegaard with 12 seconds.then we have Philipsen who is 16 and world champion in everything on a bike.i Dont know What happens to Denmark cycling but There Are talents in lines OMG.the reason is tv and cycling is More popular than football in Denmark 🇩🇰
ronde has more hills aswell and MVDP will be more rested and sharper also, so lets hope for his 3rd Ronde
Mathieu himself said that he is pretty sure he will have the best legs yet in Vlaanderen. I think he also used E3 and Wevelgem to train. A bit like he did in the TdF.
@@jaysimoes3705 yup and in the WC 23 TDF-training paid off 🤞🤞🤞🤞
Sorry JB but smart money would be on Mads not MvdP in a sprint so I have no idea what you're talking about
Spencer‘s take on Cian is out of this world. 🤯
Tadej is a well rounded super talent. Making for an exciting Giro no doubt. Matt V is another tour de force. Wout has to ride 💯% to beat him with zero mistakes. 👍🏻🚴🏼♀️💯
Pogi could win Giro on an penny-farthing bike 😂
Exciting?!! Why it will be boring as f.
WvA falling is at least in part due to him being focussed on MvdP in stead of his own race. So when he lost contact he had one goal: getting back in the wheel not matter what. And he fell.
Man... in Flanders i would do whatever to get DVB out in front if i was LAB. He can make anybody turn themselves inside out to limit his time and also catch him. He's a secret weapon i swear they havent used or been able to use in awhile now.
Important piece: van barle wining may please visma plan. Sure is not van aert plan. So mvdp can sit for other attacks, if he decides to be tactical 😂
Johann, see you could do subtitles on your La Movida!!! Come on, man?
did I hear mr JB use word prudent in a sentence, impressive linguistic skills
Don't forget Pogi had his wrist problem in the tour. And the year before he was choked and surprised by jumbo visma
and this year he will go the Giro, and next year........
@@henriksylvestolsen4885 Thats what u have to do to be the best rider in the world, he wants to win everything
@@milanvanwelden9952 Or maybe he just want to secure at least one GT since he haven't won any of them for the last two years going up against Vingegaard.
Anyone blaming Kung for Wout’s fall needs to go see an optician and then watch the replay again. Clear daylight between them, Wout’s crash was entirely his own mistake
Nobody ever blamed Kung afaik
Given the recent accidents in Flanders - are these, obviously the most dangerous races, worth the risk to the WHOLE rest of the season? Look at the lost investment by the teams/riders at increasing risk on the "cobbles!?" Heck, put the races at the end of the year....
Did VLAB/Van Art make a wise decision to race in Flanders this year - let alone race really, really hard? So much for the altitude investment..
WvA’s fall was not “bad luck” it was a bad decision driven by misjudgment.
Bernal was better at the 2019 TdF, he was rescued from a major collapse at the 2021 Giro by DFMartinez
To be fair to Wout he said the same himself after the race.
Visma looking very vulnerable
11:38 Johan having a dig at Lanterne Rogue? I disagree with his thoughts here.
Didnt Armstrong give Pantani the win on mont Ventoux
WVA can beat MVP at Paris Roubaix MVP has a problem now with Mads too he is the MVP killer the only one currently.
Nah, he's not......everyone going overboard about Mads.......
J.B. tries to make it okay to talk about skincare by saying, "we're dudes."😂
With a mug like he has... He needs all the love he can get - cream and otherwise. He's such a nervous pitch-man. A seat pole without a seat and about as comfortable sounding, '...Here, hold my seat. It's time for me to pitch...'. HARD OUCH!!!
Johan at some kennel or what ? What’s up with that dog 🐶 barking 😂
WvA more power than racecraft
Shoe was on different foot during the cross season...Van der Pol blew a corner Van Aert wins. Ven Aert destroys MVP head up in Grand Tours.....remember the season isn't only the Classics....it's a long season.
.
First
We still doing that in 2024?

@@janishenkel6451yeah.
Nope, that's not true. Skelmouse has told the media that his target is the Vuelta. And Bernal has said that he targeted the Vuelta this year. Cian is not clicking with JV yet. Maybe the pressure of how he divorces Bora. I've been waiting for Cian to show some kind of breakthrough like Laporte or Jorgenson, especially after how he parted ways from Bora. These guys are the example of riders who just click with their new team. But not every rider who changes teams will click immediately in the first year.
Dudes, that dog barking. Come on man.
WVA will come good he has beaten MVP many times more than any other rider
Schurter has a winning record v MvdP in XCO races.......
The dog in the back is annoying 😂
Pogachar is just too much. I dont think its realistic tht he is simply better than these other pro riders by as much as he is showing. THere is something wrong with this picture. Why arent we talking about that? It also making watching the race not near as interesting. I am deeply dissapointed.
Is it possible to not have the dog barking in the background? It's a quite annyoing sound.
Sir please change the channel
Right. Very simple. Don't watch.
Bernal is doing the Vuelta and this has been said many times. It´s kinda funny how clueless Spencer Martin is while talking shit about others lmao
Are you sure about that? I heard they changed plans
I also can't stand Spencer. He's clueless
@@rafalpruszynski1707 wtf no he is not
@@LarsRyeJeppesen he wondered about whether Mas, Landa and Bernal had ever beaten Pogacar and then brought up the Loze stage when none of the three were even competitive in that Tour (Mas wasn't even there anymore). Also saying Bernals Giro victory is the hipster take just screams casual to me. Nothing wrong with that, but then don't brand yourself as an expert and shit on other people.
@@alexqq14I thought Bernal was changing up his plan? At least that's what I think people heard in the "rumor mill".
Whereas WVA continue being a shade of MVDP, he will never win him. If he don't attacks him, Van der Poel don't fail. Van Aert have the legs for win, but not the attitude.
Nonsense. MvdP is slightly better but the difference always has been rather small and not one sided.
