    regarding MVDP flip & injury: there is an interview in Czech cycling magazine with his father Adrie where he mentions it:
    "His back pain no longer bothers him. He came up to last yeat during the WC in Hoogerheide and said: "Damn, Dad, I haven't felt any pain anywhere for a really long time". And fortunately it remained like that for the whole year 2023. Today he rides the bike in a completely different way and moving to Spain also benefited him incredibly"

    QuickStep's focus has indeed changed over the years. The focus is less and less on the classic spring, but more on Remco Evenepoel and his clique. The men of the classic spring are therefore still the same as years ago (Alaphilippe, Asgreen, Lampaert, ...) but they have gotten older and/or become physically exhausted. No new blood has entered the classic team, while the money and focus goes to supporting the Evenepoel project. And then of course you get these substandard results in the spring classics. And Remco is not going to save their classic spring every year by winning LBL: this year he will have to compete against Pogacar and the chance that Tadej will have to abandon again for the second year in a row with physical damage is of course mathematically possible but not very likely.

    The reason the US based guys always picked Wout over MVDP is that they are focused mostly on the TdF, where Wout had his best performances. Europeaan based cycling fans are equally focused on one day races, and they also know what is going on in cyclocross. So they have always known that MVDP was a little bit above Wout. But Wout shifted his focus to road racing earlier whil MVDP was still doing more cyclocross AND mountainbiking in the middle of the road racing season. Plus Wout isnaturally more disciplined and sensible in what he does, MVDP did plenty of silly stuff during races and outside racing.
    Last year MVDP for the first time in his career focused solely on a limited number of road race he wanted to win, and he won three of the four biggest one day races and was second in the other. This winter MVDP basically had his first really good preparation for the road season, and cyclocross was only a short side show. So that is a scary prospect for the others.
    I do hope that Wout will one day win at least one of these two races, he might be a little bit below MVDP, but he is farabove all the other riders so he really deserves it.

    • @frederikdewaele3549
      @frederikdewaele3549 2 месяца назад

      Both WVA and MVDP shifted their focus to the road at the same time (2018 I think). But MVP had that dream of mountainbiking gold at the Tokyo Olympics (we all know how that pursuit ended) so on the one side he had to choose periods to race mountainbike qualifyers when WVA was sloughing it out in the Tour, and on the other side his team Alpecin wasn't already big enough to even be invited to compete in the Tour in those years 2018-2020 anyway, so he had to chose other races to compete.
      Wout also has had some truly bad luck over the years. For instance catching Covid-19 a week before Tour of Flanders in 2022 made him lose out on competing those classics (RvV and AGR) or if he hadn't had that flat tire last year in PR, he might very well have won that race instead of MVDP. Also injury wise WVA hasn't been blessed the last couple of years. MVDP, although having some back issues in the past, luckily for him never has had to face enormous or grave wounds and injuries like Wout did in the Tour of 2019, which took him for half a year out of the game, or in Dwars door Vlaanderen 2024, which will cost him once again months of recovery.
      In the end I think MVDP currently has gotten the edge in one day racing but WVA is still the superior stage racer.

    • @rulifaller8474
      @rulifaller8474 2 месяца назад +3

      @@frederikdewaele3549 MVDP did not start seriously racing in the road in 2018, and he did not go to the TdF because that was not part of his plans due to MTB, it had nothing to do with invitations, he just never had any plans of going there.
      And MVDPs back problems could not be seen from the outside like Wouts injuries, but that does not mean that they did not bother him just as much. Of course Wout has had some terrible luck too, and I do hope that he manages to win these races eventually. But in all these spring classics they raced together I do not think that Wout managed to drop MVDP even once, the other way around happened regularly. I think the 4-1-2-1-2-1 stat of MVDP says enough. With the 4 being after he had bad luck and had to come back on his own from a minute back.

    I do not think it is fair to say only three people made it up the hill riding when MVP attacked. The single guy off the front lost his chain and was screwing around on the side of the road when MVP passed him. He blocked up the road for all the rest behind when he tried to get restarted and once the first few riders had to stop it screwed all the riders behind as well. I am sure many others were capable of riding up it as well if they had a clear road like the first three had.

    • @thiesboel3969
      @thiesboel3969 2 месяца назад

      For what it’s worth; the Belgian commentators observed that he had not lost his chain - he lost his back wheel on the slippery cobbles and then tried to manually get his chain on a bigger cog to allow him to resume his ride (which he wasn’t able to do so he had to continue by foot)

    • @jaycahow4667
      @jaycahow4667 2 месяца назад

    Well, after the drama, disaster and the damage of "Dwars door Vlaanderen" to the competitors - especially WVA - MVDP could actually only lose this race if the other teams would ride against him in a block to isolate him. Which didn't happen because instead of doing that, the other important teams actually mainly raced against each other and Alpecin-Deceuninck was actually spared because at certain times others did the dirty work and therefore did not have to be done by the MVDP team. Also... what a stupid kamikaze move by Mads Pedersen: he really played with his strength (with an anchor like MVDP's teammate Gianni Vermeersch on his wheel) for a predictable zero return. Tactically seriously screwed up I think...

      Pogacar was in magical shape in last year's Ronde and he had dry roads to play with his watts. This year's race was part cyclocross. Climbing the Koppenberg (which is scary even in dry conditions) in the rain (the cleaning machine couldn't get up there because it slipped) is a whole different beast. That is as much cyclocross technique as it is revving your big engine. I think that Wout van Aert would be better suited to accomplish this then Pogacar. But we'll never know.

      It's mainly technique on a wet Koppenberg in that you need to stay on the centerline of the cobbles and not go ride towards the sideparts of the cobbles. If you do that you slip off and either fall or have to stop because you lose momentum and speed.
