I am Dutch so I know what Pedersen said both to Danish TV2 and in English. He said Van der Poel wasin a league of his own. In Danish he said he was content with his result. That being second or third is like a win. Also the speed to which Van der Poel attacked was something he could not match. All in all pretty realistic.

There was no team before MVDP. The Roodhooft brothers created the team around him. They first started with the cyclocross, and then expanded into any type of racing MVDP wanted to do. Only later they developed into a full blown road racing team. So basically they recognized very earlythat they had an incredible diamond and they did everything to make him happy and keep him. Of course the big teams wanted him, but the ultimate freedom basically was too important to him.
Funnily he developed from a rider who raced for the win on any kind of bike in any week of the year into a racer that basically only focuses on the biggest road races. It has made him into a rider that would actually fit quite well into any of the structured big teams, but obviously he is never going to leave Alpecin.
I think Adrie said that it was doubtful if a team like Jumbo Visma (back then) which were pretty strict and probably not fitting with the character of Mathieu.
Actually before MVDP they had Niels Albert, another cyclocross star who unfortunately due to heart issues had to abandon his career

The team managers are two brothers named Roodhoofdt ( redhead ). And they made a continental team around MvdP so he could do exactly what he wants. Just ride a bike... Any bike. The aim was clear freedom and enjoyment not money. That's why the other teams didn't sign him he had everything he asked for and don't forget his grandfather is Raymond "PouPou" Poulidor and his dad Adrie vd Poel together worth over 250 pro cycling wins on their palmares
The money part of the deal is for a good part covered by his contract with Canyon.

Actual Mads Pedersen was pleased with his result today, he told in Danish Television. When Mathieu moved foreward with 60 km to go, Mads could not follow him, not that he didnt try. Today Mathieu was on another level, but Mads pleased with what he has accomplised so far this Year and that he beat Mathieu in Gent.
Good for him, he deserved a win for all his efforts this spring. Tough on him that it is almost impossible to beat MVDP when he really wants to win, even more so with his team performing this well.
Mads was racing for third. If he really wanted the 2nd, he should have waited for chasers behind and tried to drop Philipsen with someone else.
I noticed that. On Belgian television he said that Mathieu was leagues ahead of the rest. The guys are very respectful towards each other

CBS sports back in 84 started coverage in the US, that was one of the races that got me riding when I was 10. I love those years.
Alpecin has really been smart by participating in the Zwift Academy competition, thereby getting eyeballs and access to a talent pool at a much affordable contract price.
Mathieu started racing with BOXX Veldritacademie in 2011, under the Roodhooft brothers, Philip and Christoph and signed his pro contract in 2014, again riding for the Roodhooft brothers. Over the years the team changed names: BKCP-Powerplus, BKCP-Corendon, Beobank-Corendon, Corendon-Circus, Alpecin-Fenix and finally Alpecin-Deceuninck as it is today. He's always raced for the same team since then and has extended his contract through 2028. He was greatful for their support in the past and has stated that he has no desire to leave and go somewhere else.
It was a great race! I got up at 3 am MST to watch on peacock ! 🎉❤
Fantastic commentary, dominant performance for MvdP add him to the all time great list, Mads P reaching the podium is also phenomenal after a flat tire when the race was cracking up with I think 70 KM to go...great race and always a pleasure to watch, one of my favorite races.

It didn't really matter. Lance is used to being corrected by Johan and Spencer is excellent.
Pogacar (and MVP) goes early when there are significant hills, he knows that with his power to weight, no one can beat him. With hills there is less value to being in a group as the aero advantage of being in a group is greatly decreased when climbing. Let us not forget that even with MVP's performance this year, Pogacar rode off his wheel in Flanders last year.

Furthermore, it was apparent that Phil and Bob were in different locations and watching the footage. they were constantly interrupting and talking over each other and got realllly annoying

I couldn't agree more, the Peacock commentary was painful.
Jasper Philipsen is much more than a sprinter; he has the stamina and the intelligence to be up front when it matters in the races that suit him. Maybe he has effective in the classics that go above 4000 mts like Liege Bastogne Liege, but when it comes to distance (Milan San remo, Flandres, and Paris-Roubaix, he is a serious contender.
Sprinters often develop in a type of rider that is very suited for cobble races. If you look to the honour list of Paris-Roubaix, you will find that a lot of the winners have won their fair share of bunchsprints. Van Steenberghe, Van Looy, Godefroot, Planckaert. De Vlaeminck. Maertens, Museeuw, Boonen, Degenkolb. Vanderaerden, Kelly, Sagan and I am probably forgetting some of them.
Although Philipsen is one of the sprinters that can survive a hilly race, Liege Bastogne Liege is not suited for him. There is simply now way he can survive La Redoute and La Roche-aux-faucons. These climbs are really brutal and when someone like Evenepoel or Pogacar launches there, there is simply no way Philipsen could follow. The same counts for Van der Poel. A lot of people seem to think he will win Liege as well now, but with his current weight and muscle mass that is almost mission impossible.He can win the Amstel Sunday, if he races very smart and if everything falls in place, but it won't be easy and the Amstel Gold Race is not LBL. The Amstel is kind of a combi between Flanders and Liege. No cobbles, but an absurd high amount of little hills on very small routes insuring a constant fight for positions like in Flanders.
In Liege the hills are fewer but much longer and there is very rarely a serious fight for positions as they mainly ride wide roads. Because of the fight for positions, the Amstel suits MVDP, but Liege is a very different animal. A top 10 in LBL would be a fantastic result for MVDP

Phil was behind you Lance.... All the time... And Paul too... They were the voices that brought us all the emotions of your victories... And they did it with maestry.... I remember Phil standing behind you when questioned about your doping years... I don't know if something else happened behind the scenes, but he could get all names wrong, it would still be very joyful to listen to him on any broadcast... I am a huge fan of yours, but your comment made me sad...
yes but, he wasn't wrong. That was BRUTAL coverage for us in the USA.
As a Belgian, I am familiar with Phil because of watching back old TDF footage. I am sorry, but compared to the quality of commentators we have on Belgian television, Phil is very, very average and if he can;t rememeber riders names correctly anymore, than I guess it is time to give a young bloke a shot at it and put an ex pro as co commentator next to it. Someone with vast experience, a keen inside and an nice voice to listen to. I am sure there must be at least a few guys in the US that fit that profile. You don't keep people in place just because of past performances. There is a time of coming and going for everybody...
The only reason we listen through all these add is because Lance always delivers.

That chicane only worked because the group was relatively small and it was dry. It didn't change the tactics. he main contenders still had to be at or near the front for visibility of safe racing lines.
Lance....what do you do to keep your sweat out of the headset of the bike you're riding? I sweat alot too and have to re-pack my headset with grease frequently in the summer months.

On you looking ahead at the rest of MvdP's season, you have to remember the Olympics.
A lot of the big classics guys are eyeing the shot at an Olympic gold medal in Paris this year, 2 weeks after using the Tour to ride themselves into shape.
It might become the best "classics" race of the year, because of punchy route that suits many rider types, and because of the small team sizes at the Olympics, which mean all the big guns have to show up early in the race.
Belgium (Van Aert, Evenepoel, Philipsen), Denmark (Pedersen, Skjelmose), Slovenia (Pogacar, Roglic, Mohoric), GB (Pidcock, Yates, Tarling) and France (Laporte, Alaphilippe) all get 4 riders total, while Spain (Ayuso, Bilbao), the Netherlands (MvdP, Kooij), Italy (Milan, Ganna), Australia (Matthews, Groves) and the US (Jorgenson, McNulty) all get 3 riders... and the rest only 2 or 1 riders.
Many team will have only 2 or 1 domestiques - some will have none at all.

Apart from MVDP's and Alpecin's dominance, this was a great endorsement for Canyon bikes.

Peter Sagan was never near this level in the classics. He won his three WCs without ever going solo.

Well he did attack from 50km to go when he won Paris Roubaix. He just caught the last of the breakaway riders and Dillier was able to hold on to him to the line. And he dropped Vanmarke on the Paterberg when he won Flanders. He never had teammates able to constantly shut down every chase behind like MVDP. So it is a bit different
Sagan was against guys who actually knew not to work with him or help him. Van Avermat always let Sagan do 70% of the riding and Quickstep always played numbers against him etc
For some reason today teams think they should close gaps when MVDP is in their group. Trek pulling back Politt and Kung today was egregious
@@endaohalloran6649 Dillier and Vanmarke. It is not exactly Pogi and Wout is it? Neither is Greg, who only won one monument himself I think.
MVDP also had Monument wins and other great victories without any help from his team, who obviously were excellent today but that has not been there standard.
And Sagan the vast majority of his wins from group sprints, with other teams going to the line with him and even keeping the group together despite knowing that Sagan would probably win the sprint. His world titles being the obvious examples, three races where other countries made sure there was a group sprint and lone Slovak Sagan taking the win every time. So the idea that the whole peloton is helping MVDP while everyone was always riding against poor Peter is not really painting a complete picture at all.
If I remember correctly even Dillier helped Sagan after spending the whole day in the break even though he knew he had no chance of winning.
@@johnhickman2033 That is a matter of preference I guess, I did not find Sagan that interesting at all and I think the riders in the peloton also were glad to see the back of him. In a way the pre- 2023 version of MVDP was more interesting than the current version you could say, the guy that raced hard every week on CX, MTB and road, wasting energy and going between huge wins and complete collapses like in Harrowgate and an earlier PR. Now he has turned more into the 75kg equivalent of Pogi, winning one day races and stages whenever he wants to. That does make it less exciting to watch him in a way.
What if Lidl(and nobody else)doesn't chase Politt Kung and Vermeersch ? Then Alpecin has their worst chance in the breakaway. Would they get nervous and start riding to keep the gap under control?
Why? Vermeersch was there and he has a pretty decent sprint. Moreover: he would not do anything till the finih so the other two would have to work. Even if in this case tailwind was 26 km/h their speed was 45 or so, so still if you wouldn't do a thing riding behind them you would save a lot of energy. Only thing that they could have tried is to go one after another to make Vermeersch tired but they were not from the same team...So that was a no go and we saw it.

I think it should be said this race unironically had a super strong tailwind the whole day. The peloton hasn't improved by a whole 1kph in just a year lol
Alpecin owned this race. They cut down the peleton and hurt a lot of riders bringing back the chase early. In the crosswinds they took the perfect position so that the aero advantage went just back to MVDP, leaving the rest of the peleton with little draft. Then when MVDP attacked Jasper was in the way so people had to go around as you mentioned. Finally, with Jasper in the 2nd chase group it mentally crushed anyone who even thought of chasing - all they were going to do was drag a top sprinter to the line.
Spencer is quite an asset to themove.
He became 6th btw in LBL in 2020 if memory serves me well....He has also done a lot of long climbs in training this year, I mean 4-5 km climbs of 5-10% (from what I saw). But beating Tadej in LBL....I don't see that happening. Would be great if the two have tight fight.
MVP owns part of the team, that is why he went with Alpacein.

@@fwblok836 its a form of nostalgia...Phil Ligget introduced me to the sport of professional cycling and along with Paul Sherwin (RIP) provided the only view/voices into the sport that we had back in the days before the internet. He produced VHS/DVD videos of all the big pro races through his company World Cycling Productions and he published a monthly magazine called "Cyclesport" that was the only news we got about the sport in the 80s and 90s. Even as I came to recognize that the view he provided was a bit dummied down for an American audience that knows very little about the sport, and moved on to, shall we say, more sophisticated coverage available through streaming services over the past ten years, I always keep a soft spot for Phil's contagious passion for the sport that shines through to this very day on NBC Sports. There is still clearly a market for the type of content that he provides and he is an absolute legend in the sport. In fact, he would be a great interview for LA or JB1 for their legends series...
You, know Gianni V did a crap load of work for the team and I feel he was overlooked. I think from like 130K to about 57K when MVDP took off he was chasing every attach, sitting at the front. And then after that is when Jasper came in and finished the work..
So far ahead that he could actually go for a number two? Tom Dumoulin actually did that in his Giro win :D
Spencer - regarding these big performances "it's fueling based" - this is not a small difference between now and Lance's generation. They are consuming almost twice as much carbohydrate per hour (60g vs 210g carbohydrate) - in races and in training. This is a big thing. And of course there could be other "supplements."
MvdP said after the race he felt great today!! Next weekend he wil race the Amstel Gold race, should all the other racers think about the second place!?
He was exhausted last week and did not have great legs. Being in topshape and remaining there is not so easy, but it seems without Wout van Aert (and in LBL Evenepoel and I guess Pogacar) he does not need them. LBL is not well suited for him so I do no expect him to win.
MVDO said Liège was not his kind’a race….we’ll see about that.

The cobbles are not 100 years old like Lance said. Paris Roubaix already exists itself for 125 years and it always was a cobble race.
back in the day, the full length of the race was on cobbles as smooth tarmac was not yet invented.
Actually, the cobbles date back to Napoleon and are thus over 200 years old.
Another one, Museeuw is not the only one who also won with 3 minutes or more. The record after WWII is 5m06 advantage and it is held by Eddy Merckx. Tsjmill and Ballerini had more than 4 minutes...
I think I will stop watching this. There are much better Belgian Podcasts about cycling without all these historical errors...

why do the other guys in the lead groups not have some sort of plan for when Van Der Pool attacks. We all know its going to happen , but they all seem to be surprised and panic rather than work together to at least give themselves a chance...

Everyone has a plan, until the first two hours are done at 51kmh in a wind echelon. After that most contenders are isolated without helpers.. 160km to go.
It always helps when you have one legend in form and a great sprinter in form as a back up... That's how Lefevre's teams (mapei/domo/quickstep/Deceunick) kept Roubaix in a stranglehold for years . (That said: It has been a long time his team has won PB !)

@@fwblok836 Just seems like you can race for 2nd and still tow a top sprinter to the line or you can create some chaos and maybe a random late attack sticks, but I get it, Lidl Trek got a podium and good enough for them. Always fun to discuss.

Actually, they should not start in Paris or in Compiegne like they do now. Because they do, they can only ride like 55-60 km of Cobbles because the railroad for the highspeed train is an obstruction. If they would start a little bit more to the east, for example in Soissons, it's just one option, you avoid the railroadtracks and you can add easily 50k of cobbles to Paris Roubaix. I did it one time with a friend, just to test it. We started of in Soissons, we planned a route of 270k to Roubaix, including almost 110k of cobbles. After that, all skin was completely gone from my hands. I never suffered on the bike like I did that day. But it was great fun.
Like Lance said, les amies de Paris Roubaix is doing a great job, but there are plenty of other very tough cobble sections to find in that region if you just move the start to the east.
Furthermore, Museeuw is not the only one who won with more than 3 minutes and he is certainly not the recordholder when it comes to the biggest gap in Paris Roubaix. Tsjmill and Ballerini both had more than 4 minutes but the recordholder is of course Eddy Merckx who crossed the finish line in one of his victories with more than 5 minutes in advance of number two. Guys, when you want to talk histrorical facts, you need to go back further than 25-30 years... The sport has a 130 year history... I know you guys in America are only just waking up to it, but maybe ask a Belgian guy first. In general we know the history of the sport very well and I am sure Johan could have given you the correct info without having to look it up...
The same counts for the age of the cobbles. paris Roubaix is 125 years old. The cobbles are not 100 years old like Lance stated but they go back to Napoleon who wanted better and faster roads for his armies to travel on than dirt roads.
Sorry for the histrory lesson guys but you need to get the facts straight...
Alpecin is completely constructed around MVDP. Van der Poel was free to race whatever he wanted to do. The team has grown

No. That is exactly not true and we could see it in San Rmeo and that is precisely their strength. If MvdP fails they go for Jasper and Mathieu has no chance he sacrifices himself, like in the TdF, for Jasper. It is mostly about MvdP for sure, but he won yesterday due to the fact it was useless to take Jasper with them to MvdP. They would now probably lose from Jasper in a sprint.
Van Der Poel's style looks so much like Tom Boonens over the cobbles !!!

Lance saying that they got Pidcock in to replace van Baarle. The latter literally already riding his second season away from Ineos for Visma.
Lance saying they were riding with 60 guys sprinting towards the chicane rather than 120, no it was less than 35.
I actually wrote peacock and asked them to replace phil. he was the voice of my 20's but he needs to go. he never talks tactics and blunders a lot

Like in Glasgow....But Van Aert was in an excellent shape, and I know we will never know, but I think that MvdP would not be riding away like that with Wout in his wheel And I am Dutch and of course, while not a chauvinist, happy with what he is doing. But I saw a very good Wva in the E3 more so because he just came back from 3 weeks of training.

Time will tell. Could be motor though. The cheats are very clever and it takes years for it to be uncovered.

Why A[pecin started decimating peloton from first cobble? According to Philipsen, they wanted to make less bunch when they arrived at the chicane before the Arenberg. Which is thats what actually happened. Barely a full peloton. So, the chicane didn't matter this time around, because Alpecin exploded the peloton since the first cobble. If no team did that, the chicane will matter. Also Liege was in his plan, but it'll be later decided.
I was thinking Phil should have just started calling him VanderPoel and skipped the first name issue. It was kind of painful to here him constantly correcting himself.
The last 2-3 years that team seems to have perfect luck to boot. Which also makes it extremely hard to compete with that team.

I think that is realistic. These climbs are different from those in Vlaanderen, San Remo or Glasgow. They do not suite him that well, but it is also not TdF stuff. On the otherhand, the solo in Tirreno Adriatico if memory serves me well that he completed did surely have similar climbs. Also: no Pogacar, no Evenepoel and no Van Aert....But Pidcock is also better and he is there too I guess? La redoute at 35 km for the finish...not ideal for MvdP. But if he can carry his current shape to LBL....who knows.

They already revoked it. They mentioned Johan was always right and have shown the example with hi claim that MvdP is just more talented and has more of a killer instinct many times after it. But what they rarely mention (or at least I did not hear it): MvdP is tactically so much better. He seems to go in the right place always. Another thing that is rather exceptional: MvdP is one of the very few riders he will go for a solo even if the gap remains just 5-10 seconds for 10-15 minutes. Almost everyone else gives up within 1-2 minutes but he doesn't. And than he tends to extend it The ones that give up are the chasing group. WvA is more allround, winning where MvdP never can like TdF mountain stage, sprints and timetrials. But has become less consistent, surely with Jasper there too in the sprints. I think Wout van Aert must feel pretty gutted, not just because of his tragic fall but also in the knowlege that he was in excellent shape and probably capable of at leat giving Mathieu a hard time or matching him this year. We never know, but in E3 he came back after 3 weeks of training and brought the gap back after a fall in the worst place possible to a mere 10 s. Wout was superstrong and better than in a very long time. He knows it I think and that makes it extra painful I bet.

I’ve seen this shit for 40 years now,been racing myself 20years of it - i’m fed up and this was the last time I wasted a weekend watching that farce.

At first he never does edge out that much that easily. It is when they give up, because they can't. Mind you that a week ago he was not doing well and was completely exhausted. He needed the rest. Also, last year in MIlan San Remo he did not get to such a gap at all but that was with Wout. And Ganna. And Pogacar. And these weren't there. Another fat: it was a strong tailwind so the chasing group had far less advantage. Another point: he lost to MAds in Gent Wevelgem, could barely follow him on the climbs and he lost fair and sqaure to Tadej last year in de Ronde van Vlaanderen.
So his supremacy now is that he is the best of all riders currently and by far, also due to the fact that some others who are a lot closer to him simply aren't there.
Pidcok himself said he asked to be at the race. Implying Ineos made him race, and implicting it as a an act out desperation of Ineos is poor taste. JB you understand the US isn´t the center of the universe right? It´s tiresome to watch a race and see 100,000s of spectators line up a long the road and listen to you questioning how big the race really is?
