this mission is an absolute meme sometimes. I replayed the game the other day, and Errol pushed my zoomer across the finish line. didn't even look like I won.
Just finished it without the skips. Best advice: Learning the course with a couple of deliberate losses here and there can be good for predicting the turns. However when playing to win… Stop accelerating BEFORE the sharper turns to get through the rings and accelerate AFTER you hit these rings. Also press R1 immediately after every ring with a straight run/shallower turn. It’s tough but consistency in the sharper turns in key. Erol wound up about 3 seconds behind me by the end.
Definitely 2nd Hardest mission next to the Water Slums one, damnn first actually completed the race with the help of ya 76 minutes later from starting this mission xD this seems to be a good 2nd option incase I miss a ring which is always a good option
After reading the comments, I must be a god because I beat this mission first try my first time ever playing and continue to beat it with little to no trouble ever since. Although getting the gold is a different story lol
Jak 2 has a weird failing condition for like all of its missions either you die or destroy the thing or someone else dies and that’s pretty much your only fail conditions besides select other missions ie racing missing a ring doesn’t fail until you hit the next if you never hit the next and only hit the win condition area it’s a win
It’s not even the Erol race this is the underground side mission race where you can get up to 9 precursor orbs for getting the gold record time which is sub 2:08. It’s honestly horse shit though. The pedestrians and cornering have fucked up the gold record time for me probably 60 times now at least. This platinum trophy is simply not even worth the time it takes to get because of this race challenge alone.

I did it with the skips and it still took me like 8 hours over 2 days to get 2:06.87

How does it let you skip all the checkpoints?
The trigger that kicks you out is only if you go through rings out of order. That why he skips all of them after the shortcut
