How a 7-Second Improvement Saved 19 Weeks of Work!

  • Hi folks, in this before and after video, we share a simple improvement our maintenance staff made to reduce non-value-added time at one of our fabrication stations. By reducing the amount of non-essential travel time between cuts, we doubled the output of this process by saving 7 seconds on every cycle. This is significant for two reasons: first, this process was a bottleneck and was limiting the flow of material downstream in the factory, and second, we need to repeat this process over four hundred thousand times per year! Using forty hours per week, this improvement saved us over 19 weeks of non-value motion and wasted waiting per year!
What is LEAN about? It's a continuous improvement mindset that aims for excellence by simplifying processes, eliminating waste, and removing non-value-added activity.
If you can think of a way to improve this process further, let me know in the comment section. If you like this video, give it a thumbs up, subscribe to the channel, and share it with your friends.
    Thanks so much!

It sure does. The sad part about this improvement is that we have been running this machine in its old configuration for over 7 years! Imagine the waste!😭

Proper use of fast travel in such a repetitive cycle is capital

Always Good to shave time like that. Looking at the after video there are still a couple of seconds to be had.

Thanks for the feedback, Bill. As you pointed out, our team has been looking at this process to see if it needs to travel so far down after the cut. Making the travel time faster is a good start, but it would be even better if we could eliminate it!

Yes, this type of improvement definitely benefits the employee's performance. However, at the heart of our continuous improvement culture is the underlying belief that every person should look to make improvements every day, whether big or small. Most days, our improvements generate very modest results, but every once in a while, we get a really exceptional result like the one featured here.

0:23 risk for the hydraulic hose to be damaged?

Great observation! I just went out and checked the process and there is definitely signs of wear on the hose and the frame. Stay tuned, there will be an improvement video shortly! Thank you for pointing that out.
