Why are they acting as if fast foods are only just now moving overseas? They have been overseas for decades. Not just the past decade, the past 2 or 3 decades.
To answer the question at the end of the video. I live in italy now. Fast food is trying to increase its presence here but sometimes they fail because no one wants it. McDonald's has succeeded but other chains like burger king and kfc struggle to keep more than a few store open.
I am noticing that i drink more sugary drinks when I am pregnant or if someone with unhealthy eating habits stays with us because we buy the drinks to help them feel welcome and then i drink with them.
I just gave birth so i am looking forward to getting back to cooking for my family and drinking only water.
melodramatic7904 but the massive growth of fast food chains in asian countries were in this decade. even at 2010, there was only 1 mcdonalds in my city. But now, mcdonalds are everywhere. Burger king opened 5 chains only in 2018 at my city. So yeah..

Am from Africa (kenya)-correction-they are targeting the rich and the (middle class) we now have kfc,pizzahut,dominos etc but guess what only rich people can afford to eat there frequently the rest of us go there as birthday treats and mostly once or twice a month.They also set up their branches in lavish neighborhoods so the poor are not being targeted it is the rich.Where my grandmother lives there is no fast food anywhere on site and the rich have access to youtube so they can search the disadvantages of these fast foods and choose to eat or not to eat.

My first time actually realizing how damaging these fast food corporations are for my country, was when I went to a Carls Jr. and they gave me a HUGE cup of soda, I personally don’t drink much of it, so I’m fine with a small size, but it even seemed exaggerating for someone who does drink a lot more, it was just so big, big enough for 3 or 4 people, who needs that much soda?
I went for a trip to Vegas for the first time ever in my life and my sisters wanted to try in & out and I ordered a large lemonade and it was enough for 2-3 people. Was insane I threw out most of it
Fast food corps are not targeting the poor in developing countries. The fast food restaurants in those countries are actually really nice establishments compared to how they are in the US and the poor can’t afford to eat at those restaurants actually...

By doing that, they create a sense that eating in their restaurants is aspirational - the businesses see this as a sustainability strategy. As people climb out of poverty and middle classes grow, their customer bases will grow too as people will want to be seen to be consuming something which indicates their class status. So... in a way, by carving out this image of themselves in developing countries, they are targeting the poor, by targeting the contemporary middle class.

I do the same. Nowadays I mostly just drink water. The only exception is when having milk in cereal

As someone from the Netherlands I've never been to a kfc before. It's important to educate people about the risks of eating fast food. I go around once a month to mc donalds so it's not like I always eat healthy but I know what the risks are if I eat out often
I'm like you. I don't eat often fast food in France because I know the risks. But I can't lie, fast food are really tasty (they have a bunch of scientist specialized into industrial food, just to have the better taste, so the more addictive). When we know it's dangerous for our health, and all the diseases we can have with nutrition, we automatically get careful with our nutrition.
Unfortunately, here, not everyone is careful with their nutrition. There is people who don't care about it, and others people who are trapped into fast food, snacks etc...

The problem with fast food and 'fat food' in general is that it causes addiction on the long run. It's ok to eat fast food sometimes, it just doesn't have to become a habit.
So why are you buying? I live in US and I don't eat fast food. None. Zero. And I am very healthy for my age. The solution is easy. Don't buy. Period.
I just realised that the last can of soda i had was 12 months ago. Whenever i go out i see all kinds of sodas in the market but i hardly even look at them. I feel so proud of myself. Btw i am from India 🇮🇳

As an American that has traveled to other countries I'm always surprised at how many American fast food there are in other countries. I almost feel a bit guilty because it feels we are somehow imposing these bad type of fast food to the people around the world.

Do everything you can to spread bad press and not support these companies. Companies like McDonald's, Coca-Cola, and Nestle only care about profit. They don't give a damn about the health of anyone.
Sadly it doesn't work just as well in some asian countries :))) I live in Vietnam and Fast food is pretty expensive compared to healthier options. Plus, vegies are compulsory in every meal, they are cooked in different styles to complement the main dishes, not just dully mixed up like in some salads. Locals rarely go to fast food restaurants, simply beacuse there are cheaper, more delicious and lower in carbs snacks.
I agree so much! I live in Pakistan and Eating unhealthy is Expensive, A kilogram of apples costs like 30 rupees (which is like 0.15 euros). Keep in mind I live in a City, Our Food is relatively expensive compared to other places in our country, like villages. Mean while a Meal at KFC costs 1,400 Rps (7.22 euros). That’s expensive! I hope that these companies never get a foot hold in my country. Also restraint which are healthy and litterally show you them preparing the food, are cheaper. Also parents litterally punish their children for eating unhealthy, if they’re local. So yup, I would rather live in A 3rd world country like Veitnam or Pakistan rather than America any day.
When I lived in America, I noticed it was hard to get vegetables in dishes unless I get a salad. In asia, veggie are better integrated in most dishes.
Hello neighbor! From Philippines here. I wish my country had cheaper veggies. It's insane how a kilo of onion is at 400pesos here. That is almost 10 US dollars. I don't know how much it's that in Vietnam but is crazy expensive here. But fastfood is cheap asf here. Enraging.

I grew up in the rural parts of China, and healthy food options are much easier to access and is damn tastier than fast food, not that we don't go out for mcdonald's, but only every once in 4-6 months or so.
Ever since I tasted McDonalds fried chicken I was hooked! It was soooo good! I was eating it practically everyday until I noticed my gut growing fatter and fatter then I said enough :) I still eat it though, just once a week.

Two years ago I was diagnosed type 2 diabetes but stopped drinking sugary soda and cut down eating fast-food burgers which lowered my A1C to 5.3-5.7 the whole time. My Doctor says if my A1C reaches 7 again I would start taking medication.

Thing is in most asian market the fast food restaurant advertised themselves as some "prestigious" place to eat and with most of this country having a majority of their population leaving poverty becoming middle class, many fast food restaurant has become a status symbol. While it haven't completely taken over due to the rich culinary history of this region, them advertising themselves as a lifestyle instead of food. I personally find McD burger the stalest shit ever (I don't really know why people in America hates BK since at least to my tongue they taste way better than McD), street stalls has better food for half the price but you won't get the "first world dining experience" and zoomers eat that shit. It's always the kids, its always the damn kids that are gullible.

When i went to a McDonald's in Thailand i was so shookt with how big their cups for soda was. And refillable too. Mind blown.
The problem arent the companys, the problem are the consumers
These companies rely a lot on spreading misinformation, you can't really blame consumers for being lied too. A lot of the fight back against these companies in North America and Europe is that the truth has spread. But the places these fast food places are going, they are working as hard as they can to keep those already known truths a secret.
It's actually both, companies and their lobbyist for not being entirely honest about the risks of what they sell, and the misinformed majority who don't even think obesity and other problems will affect them until it's very late.

Wow, the last time I had fast food was... maybe a year ago? I cook my own food mostly so I can control what goes in it, and it's not hard to cook, nor does it have to take long. Meal prep is key, and there are so many options in supermarkets now.
I'm from Kuwait. And from what it looks my society is going to crash badly sooner or later.
The average Kuwaiti guy smokes 1-2 packs a day, Smokes hookah at least ONCE a week,
eats fast food at least ONCE daily, drink 1-2 Red bull can a day.
Plus most of our athletes are nothing but steroids junkies. You can't walk by any gym without seeing steroids syringes on the floor.
Everyday there is a new restaurant to try and a new Hookah place to hang around and smoke.
Now Sleeve gastrectomy surgeries are the most common in Kuwait.
You must know some one who did it and he has a friend and a family member who did it as well.
Medically speaking, We have more and more open heart surgeries for people in their 40s,
Strokes for people in their 30s, and erectile dysfunction so common that it affects people in their 20s.
Thank God he spared me not to live like most Kuwaitis.

That comparison didn't make sense. The consumer chooses what he/she wants to eat. The only thing American companies do is sell the food. They don't FORCE consumers to but it. They advertise it to them.

It's not just calories; it's the sedentary life really. Although fast food would still account for obesity, it is really a lifestyle syndrome. One can still be obese and not eat fast food. The real problem is eating too much calories and not spending them all--as in no physical activity, no exercise. To lose weight, the amount of activity must be greater than the amount of calories taken in. So one can be at a caloric surplus and still maintain or lose weight if the activity is greater. Think Michael Phelps who takes in 10,000 calories a day but doesn't gain or maintains weight because of his activity. So fast food is just one of the equation.
Sedentary behavior comes from the hormone imbalance these sugary junk foods cause. It's proven
If you've traveled to other countries you would know fast food is relatively expensive to what you can get locally. This really makes zero sense that they would target the poor. Junk food in little convenience stores target the poor and those countries have their fair share of junk food/snack food manufactures. You can't blame every fat guy in the world on America.
It doesn't make sense to blame a country on exporting obesity, when it's the corporations within countries that are doing the exporting. plus this video doesn't take into account the numerous other fast food companies already established in developing countries. This somewhat oversight means that if KFC or McDonalds do not set up in these developing countries then another company will take its place. SADLY

I was walking outside on the streets of latin america on my way to the gym when sudendly I was attacked by american imported mcdonalds officials, who forced me into one of their just established locations, I was gun pointed and they told me they were going to kill me unless I buy 1 burger 1 large fries and 1 large soda, it really suck but I had no choice, even after buying the meal they kept pointing guns at me till I ate it all, after that they laughed and told me "see you tomorrow buddy"

Like I said, not everyone knows the word "junk food" even exists. you might be living in environment where a talk on junk food is common , but there are nations out there where such word doesn't even exist, let alone a talk on it. I was one of those people who didn't know, they didn't teach it in school and internet was not a thing back then. all I ate was junk food in my teen days (and a lot of sodas) until I got autoimmune disease in my early 20, that's when I started to care enough to read and later thanks to Internet I know even more. This is coming from someone with decent english, now imagine people who don't even speak english.

I love how all these documentaries always blame the companies but never the consumers. It is the consumer who has the power to buy or not buy these products. If you go to a fast food restaurant and buy a Whooper for $5.00. What are you going to eat the next day. The $12.00 ground beef can be hamburgers one day, tacos, the next day and meatloaf the day after that and sloppy Joe's the 4th day.
Now that is 4 days of one food item at $12.00.
Now compare fast food 4 days in a row. A whopper is $5.00x4 days is $20.00. Because you have to eat out everyday . So fast food is still more expensive than grocery stores.
For $7.50, you can buy a pack of burgers and last you a week compared to going to buy a Big Mac for 7 days at $5.00. That's $35 compared to buying a pack of burgers at the grocery store
So how is grocery shopping more expensive again?
An Extra large coke at a grocery store is nearly $5.00.
You can buy 2 Minute Maid Juces at Wamart for $1.50.
It's just sad that most people are aware on how to be healthy, but still chose to eat garbage, for me sometimes it's really not about the fast food, it's the people who aren't trying to live healthy... And honestly I'm guilty with it... I'm normally skinny before, no matter how I eat, even i don't exercise, those times i only eat healthy, but since before covid pandemic, I've been into unhealthy foods, and in just a year, I gain a lot of weight, It's hard to get back to my normal eating habit, since these days unhealthy foods are cheaper than those healthy foods... It sucks...
Large multinational corporations don't spend billions on advertising and promotion of their products for nothing. The companies expect results, and they get them, for the most part. People aren't "choosing" anything, in that sense.
People in other countries have no agency.

This is so true for the Philippines. I think we now have Burger King per every 10km radius in major cities. and Filipinos are gaining the weight as well.
The only problem that is facing developed country is fast food are cheaper than heathy food ..but here in Africa (developing) healthy food is more cheaper than those pizza...we usually say it's for the rich ... personally I have never eaten junk foods... just enjoying eating my carrots as snacks..
I agree, in India as well fresh vegetables are cheap, in city area it's expensive, but if we see future costs on health, it's still chepa to eat wholesome fresh food. Also I think people hog in fast food stores. I was strictly restricted by my parents to eat it, I moved out during college and apart from campus, the only place to hang around was restaurants. Mumbai has very few public places like gardens, they are Crowded as well. So it was lack of public space that I started eating burger.

I've seen this everywhere i've traveled. They were handing out free Crispy Kream donuts in Lima, Peru. For me its one for the most depressing things. Peru has delicious local food already, theres no need for fried chicken. Local markets getting replaced by fast food chains and sterile malls is just one of the horrible acts of corporations in search of more money with no regard for humanity.

I’m Peruvian and I love Peruvian food but I also love sushi, Italian, Chinese, French, Ethiopian, Indian and, once in a while, fast food. Heck, we have our own fast food chains. I will have donuts once in a while too. And I love the convenience of supermarkets as much as most Americans. I love to have options like most humans. I am completely against people telling me that we shouldn’t be allowed to be able to make our own choices.

What constitutes most fast food items? Bread, minced meat, potatoes and a lot of oil to deep fry everything. Yeah, none of those were invented by the fast food companies. Those are all present in one form or another in most countries in the world. I can go out right now and buy 8-10 samsas or chebureks (fried meat pockets) at a street stand for the price of a local Big Mac. We have been eating unhealthy long before the fast food chains came here and we will continue to if they are gone someday.

These are international companies that all have local subsidiaries targeting/catering to their local marketplace and consumer base. To say "the US is exporting obesity" is simply not true
The real question to be ask is why are healthier food options not as affordable?
Healthier food is actually more affordable after looking at long term medical costs.
While I enjoyed the content of this piece and enjoyed the interviews you conducted, I can't help but feel like this topic did not get the degree of critical thinking it deserved, and I am not someone deeply versed in this subject. Two aspects of required context that needed covering to accurately discuss this topic: the reduction in worldwide hunger/starvation of the majority of people over this time period (not malnutrition, but "real" - not-enough-calories hunger) for people in developing nations, AND more explanation of the impact of these "fast food" restaurants being the high end option for most people - usually inaccessible for daily consumption and meant for special occasions. While your points here might still be valid, as these economies develop, people get more busy schedules and people earn more spending money - I can't help but feel like this was created with a clear "American" bias, which implicitly assumes both that people in developing/undeveloped countries consume fast food in the same way as Americans (they don't) while not mentioning of how some of this processed food/soda can allow for more individuals to live without fear of hunger. Just my 2 cents.

I think it’s finally time something actually be regulated. There’s something seriously wrong when a primary business practice is getting someone hooked on your product and programming them to crave it through ubiquity and having addictive ingredients (like sugar).
In Mexico coke has become the basic drink, replacing water. The reason is water is more expensive than coke out there. A 3 liter bottle is anout 75 cents to $1.25, a water bottle could be as much as double that. Every home ive been to out there is guaranteed to have a 3 liter coke bottle in the fridge than a 10 gallon water jug.
I am from Indonesia and I have stopped consuming american fast food restaurant like McD, Burger king and all that stuff.. they are tasty and faster than making our own meal but I realize how harmful it is if consume continuously.
Incredulously flawed logic. It is easy to place the blame on fast food restaurants for obesity. However, the responsibility falls on consumers to eat responsibly and in moderation. Health education is tantamount in making these kinds of decisions. A fast food restaurant should be a treat and not a main diet. To place the blame on companies who provide an optional good/service is nonsensical. Not to mention, those that say healthy food is too expensive - its simply not true. There are plenty of foods that are healthy and affordable from beans, lentils, chicken, eggs and rice to apples, oranges, kiwi and all kinds of vegetables. If you don't like the taste, then that is on you. Stop blaming others and take responsibility for your life choices.
Finally some sense. Nobody forces people to eat at McDonald’s or to drink Coca Cola on a regular basis. Plus, most countries have their own version of fast food and they are just as bad as McDonald’s or KFC.
I try to balance between nutrition and junk, and mostly junk food wins, the smell of the burger and fries and the taste triggers the craving to just grab one. And luckily from early on in my life I have consciously avoided soft drinks, so that is not a big problem. US is not the moral keeper of the world, like it pretends to be, can AJ+ do a video on the havocs wrecked by US across the world, exporting obesity is one, exporting arms, promoting terrorism, etc.

In Indonesia, Pizza Hut isn't considered a fast food chain like McD or KFC. It's considered as like a family sit down dinner, people would sit down and eat there with a family and plus it isn't as cheap as McD or KFC. People would line up out the door just for Pizza Hut.

If somebody were to look at the "List of fast food restaurant chains" on wikipedia, of the 33 Chains listed under the Global section, only 3 aren't American (Tim Hortons from Canada, The Pizza Company from Thailand and Jollibee from the Philippines). So yeah, most fast food is indeed exported from the US.
When it all comes down to it we have to be informed and make better choices when it comes to what we eat. These companies are advertising their food worldwide because they need to make their money but they not pointing a gun to our heads forcing us to eat their food.

People aren't islands making completely sovereign decisions independent of the social and economic environment they are in. I assume (maybe wrongly?) that everyone values improving the quality of life in their societies, and that entails a little bit of nudging people to make better, healthier decisions and creating enabling environments for that to happen. That might mean regulating advertisement of fast food to kids, putting taxes on sugary beverages etc..

Andy Davis - I value living in a society where people are healthy and happy. I imagine you do to as a self-described 'liberal'. That is why we live in societies in the first place - because we are better off cooperating socially and economically with each other than living everyone for themselves alone in the woods. But living together, and creating conditions in which people have the opportunities to be happy and healthy means setting some ground rules including regulating markets and business. Where the lines are drawn is dynamic and shift over time as the values of a society change, or new problems (like obesity and non-communicable disease or environmental damage etc) emerge. I'm sure that you would agree that it is a good thing that toxic waste isn't allowed to be dumped into rivers and streams (although regulations on this have been scaled back under Trump)? This represents a sacrifice of some portion of some companies' profits in order to keep people healthy. If a society cares only about profit and economic growth above all else, they're likely not to end up in very good shape. You mentioned education. Yes, health education is good, and we should have more and better quality health education, but that alone isn't going to be enough. Because a vegan diet or 'greens' is cheaper than fast food doesn't' make it realistic that people who are addicted to fast food and soda are just going to swtich. Price is only one factor. Maintaining a vegan diet has other kinds of transaction costs beyond price. Time for instance. Fast food is convenient and everywhere. Being a vegan isn't very convenient and takes a lot more time and a energy to maintain. Buying and cooking greens isn't realistic for a lot of busy working and middle class families, the poorest of whom live in 'food deserts' where they don't even have access to markets where they can buy healthy foods.

A sugar tax on soda and for that matter, a fat tax on fatty foods is an interesting concept. Since obesity cost everyone in any given society, you could direct that tax revenue towards health care cost of treating the very people who are consuming the unhealthy products but in reality it just gives politicians more money to do whatever they want
