Hey guys, just noticed I'd said camera instead of lens in a segment of the video. We all get our words mixed up from time to time, especially me but I'm sure you know what I mean and forgive me 😁
i noticed that 😉
Hehe.. But got it right in the next sentence 😁.. Not a big deal brother. A great video I'd say!
Definetely the best "kit" lens I ever owned. Ended up getting rid of it for the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 just for the constant f2.8 but I missed the OIS and the reach, ended up swapping the Sigma for a Tamron 17-70 f2.8, but still think that the Fuji 18-55 is an amazing lens and has helped me produce some of my favourite photos and videos.
Looking forward to see the new Kit lens coming out next year!
@@perhat22yep, it will have the 16mm wide focal that both the Fuji and the Sigma did not have. Harder decisions ahead...
Same here. Sold the kit for a mix of other zooms and primes. But I regret it. A lot of money spent for something this lens did just as well
@@JeremyKler very true
I upgraded from the 16-80mm f/4 lens to the 18-55 f/2.8-4 lens and it was such a massive improvement, I totally agree with you.
Still have mine, not using it because I've got the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 (a lens that is almost glued to my X-S20), and I should sell it, but...hard to do it. Is a very good lens (and I have a superb copy, as sharp as the Sigma).
Another nice review, thank you. I bought the 18-55 in 2012 to go with my X-T1 and earlier Pro1, which I still own and use. I have the 16-55 and enjoy both. On Monday I was out in Hyde Park, New Bond Street and Notting Hill, photographing Christmas lights. Leaving the X-H1 at home, the kit for the day needed to be light, carrying the X-T1, 18-55, 14mm, and the Laowa 9mm, I was able to keep weight down and shoot all day. The 18-55 is as good today as it was in 2012. A 5* kit lens and more.
Great - thanks for sharing, thats a nice setup you've got there. I loved the X-T1 - would love to get hold of one again!
Hi Jay. I also had the X-T3 and sold it. My X-T1 has taken some of my best captures. The H1 is also a go to, I was tempted by the T4 and T5, but why spend the cash when The T1 and H1 do the job. With the grip on the T1 and H1 its all I'll ever need. @@Jay_Ducker
Wonderful review, thank you very much for making it - just one point of clarification - this lens does in fact have an aperture ring, but you need to toggle the manual mode on the side of the lens if you want to set the aperture using the ring, instead of setting it from the camera body.
Thank you! Yes - You are correct it has an unmarked aperture ring but I never use it. Slipped my mind but thank you
This lens is awesome, and rarely leaves my X-S10. Definitely an excellent all around performer.
The 18-55 is my pseudo 18, 23, 35 prime right now. BTW, it does have an aperture ring but isn't marked as it's not a constant value. I'm very much a newb at video. But, I've done a few little things using this lens and it works great, especially the OIS. All-in-all this is a very good lens.
Excellent selection of photographs. I use the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-F4 on my Nikon D5500
Thank you - thats a nice focal length and i like Sigma lenses a lot
Solid video, Jay! Excited to be a new subscriber as I’ve been wanting an X-S20 for months and finally pulled the trigger this week, but was undecided between the Fuji 18-55 or the Sigma 18-50 and if it was worth the extra cash. I got a deal on Cyber Monday where I got a used 18-55 for $250, just arrived in the mail and it looks to be in perfect shape. Just gotta wait for the camera itself when it shows up tomorrow.
Anyway, thanks so much for providing your experience and sample shots, between the price and your video it’s given me a lot of confidence that I made the right decision.
Hey mate - thank you. I really appreciate that and your support. It is a great lens and one that's been hard to get rid of or trade in. That's exciting about your XS20. It's great camera imo! You gonna have a lot of fun with it!
My most used Fuji lens tbh
believe it or not, i purchased 3 lens sirui, sigma, viltrox 13mm f1.4 exactly like yours because i saw ur review videos which are incrediblely detailed and practical so, thank you!
Great to hear!
a beast of a lens!
I personally think this is the most hyped lens of the whole lineup.. Everyone loves this lens. So I don't think "UNDERRATED" is correct. I like it, still own one. But never really fell in love with its output compared by my 35mm 1.4 for instance. Also, the sharpness it really depends on your copy (I had 3 in total, some were really bad).
I love this lens but after relatively light use mine has a few a specs of dust inside.
So much so that I have 2 copies of this lens as well as the lesser rated 16-45mm lens. All lenses have their own idiosyncracies, but certainly Fuji do not cut corners on their "kit" lenses.
even more underrated is the XC 15-45mm kit lens
Not only is that lens a giant killer, but it's a brilliant 15mm for nothing! But all the plastic Fuji's are brilliant, the 35mm and 50-230 are top lenses too!
Actually, in practice it is wheather resistant. I left mine out in the rain with an X-E1 over night. The next day I dried it in a pot of rice. No problems in the next 7-8 years. ;-)
Oh Wow!
How is it underrated exactly? 🤔 It is considered by most Fujist as the best kit lens there is...
Anyway, it's a great lens is sold as a kit, but bought alone, you better go for the Sigma 18-50 (depending if you have IBIS).
It’s a good lens but let’s be real… it’s not underrated at all. Desperately needs an update: Weather Sealing, improved optics, better min focus distance / mag ratio... Sony lens technology leaps & bounds ahead. Sigma & Tamron make better zooms. Viltrox giving Fuji primes a run for their money while they’re busy making weird niche lenses like 8mm, 30mm, etc… might need some restructuring over in Tokyo lol
Smaller, more portable...sigma 18-50 f2.8. I sold my Fuji 16-55 for it and have no regrets.
Oh interesting 🤔
this lens actually have aperture ring
Yeah you’re right. It has an unmarked aperture ring
I find it boring and flat, boring rendering so I finally sold it after 5 years. I don’t do any videos and only own one zoom now 55-200mm which I love. After getting the XF35mm1.4 I didn’t use the 18-55mm for 3 years.
getting replaced next year
I heard...
The XF 18-55mm is highly regarded. So no, not under rated. 🤷🏼
