- Here at the @eastfieldgunroom channel we are no shrinking violets when it comes to sourcing and reviewing rare and exciting shotguns. In this weeks review we are excited to present what can only be described as a genuine one off.
AYA (the king of Spanish gunmakers) are renowned for their side by sides, but they also have a history of over and under production. Having taken much inspiration from the likes of Perazzi, Kemen and Gamba this MD2-S showcases yet more talents of this favourite Spanish gunmaker.
Believed to be the only one in existence (in essence a prototype) and even rarer than that crazy multi coloured Beretta!
Great review of a very nice looking gun. Absolutely loved the pronunciation of "Aguirre y Aranzabal" at 3:40! Sounds right to me 🙂
I have a Ruger Red Lable, and, appart from the obvious differences the barrels and mechanics are very similar
Thank you for your comment. Kind regards, Matthew
I bought an AYA Coral B o/u in 1978, the year I got married. I believe it was made under licence from Merkel and was a copy of their 201E. It cost me new over £650, the same Merkel was nearly £1k. It served me very well for over 20 years. Very distinctive heavy germanic game scene engraving.
Thank you for your comment. A quick Google shows that in todays world that the Coral B would still be the best part of £5000. Kind regards, Matthew
In the Curio & Relic world, Spanish Mausers have an undeserved reputation for being inferior. This beautiful gun may be tainted as well, but I think that's unjustified.
Thank you for your comment. I completely agree, AYA's reputation for quality products is completely justified. Kind regards, Matthew
I’m pretty sure they make a gun with a boss action again now or have recently started. I do like the look of this gun it looks high quality.
Thank you for your comment. Yes I believe that they are currently producing something. In fact they seem to be offering a few O/U options. Kind regards, Matthew
What a lovely looking gun .
Thank you for your comment. I agree, a very pretty gun. Kind regards, Matthew
Nice gun and great review. I wonder why it never went into production. But is this gun and the others you mention not in fact a ‘Boss’, copy as it uses the ‘Boss’, action.
Very interesting shotgun! One question I'd always pondered was why AyA made such a commitment to the Merkle design but did not attempt to copy the Boss. By seeing this specimen, it was no problem for them to produce. Now I'll have to ponder why it took so long to execute and what stopped them from following through to production? 🤔 Great video!
Thank you for your comment, I am pleased that you enjoyed the video. It would certainly have been interesting to see what might have happened if the MD series had taken off. Maybe just bad timing I guess. Kind regards, Matthew
The AYA MD series. Brought out after the DIARM years from the O/U by the Aremberri company.
Aremberri if I remember worked for Perazzi for a time and brought out this general firearm in the early 1970's I do believe that Kemen had a tie in as well.
Thank you for your comment and information. That all makes sense. Kind regards, Matthew
