The longer we stick to lead the longer we are anchoring ourselves to something that resonate well with the general public. Most people don’t understand the ballistics. My favourite comment is “I like lead because it deforms better so I know it will deposit all its energy in the target.” A shotgun pellet is not a supersonic bullet by the time it hits a target. At longer ranges a pellet is only generating about 3ft/lb of energy. It is impossible to produce hydrologic shock at that limited velocity. Shotguns kill by pattern and penetration. Experiments by Cranfield University show that penetration is good at nearly 50 yards PROVIDED you step up shot size by two and use high-velocity cartridges. If you use size 3 shot then you’re shooting equivalent to 5. Steel will never pull down 70 yard birds. But 95% of people can’t hit them regardless of what’s in the gun.
A very interesting and informative video. The number 7 24g steel loads were a revelation. You demonstrated their effectiveness and range limit well. Thirty five yards is still excellent with clean kills for such a light load, which will be kinder on the shoulder, as you said. Well shot.
Good field craft. Good kit. Good shots👍👍 The 7s in steel have a serious pellet count even in a 24g load. The multiple strikes are devastating on soft feathered birds like crows. Great video. Thanks for posting.
I started watching your channel months ago but recently subscribed. I found your videos to be interesting with some humor spread in as well. I especially like the videos on your adventure with the 410. I have recently jumped on the 410 wagon myself. I live in the USA and enjoy watching the English field sports. I saw you on the Jack Pyke video shooting the high tower. I was surprised to see you in the "Big League" with the big names in British shooting. Cheers
Here in New Zealand we have to shoot steel over waterways when duck shooting, but strangely the clay shooting club I belong to is strictly lead only, cool video keep it up !
Yes, we have had 17 years of steel use in NZ, 3 years of optional use before it became mandatory on game birds. Been making steel hunting loads for all this time and after the initial expectation that 2's were the thing as the rule was to shoot two sizes bigger, lead #4 so Steel #2's it has slowly evolved toward small sizes and lighter loads, even 5 shot steel. The usage now is #3,#4 then #2's in rank of popularity. The key is to keep the payload less and keep the velocity up. Trap shells in 7 (2.54mm)steel are fine with 1230-1250 fps at 3" on clays and there are more pallets anyway. Used correctly there is nothing wrong with steel but granted it is different to leadshot, always well be. I took 6-8 years before users changed their shooting style from the historical lead skybusting method. You will find that ardent DTL shooters just do not want to use steel in their precious guns but being that steel shot in fully enclosed in the wad cup there is no problem. One day they may not have any choice asgrounds adapt to changes to comply with rules, good or bad that they may be.
Nice video and very nice shots! Lead is banned here in the Netherlands, i only use steel. The Gamebore black gold 32gr nr3&4 are my favorit, bit thumpy on the recoil but you will get very good kills, even on geese!
Nice video burt. I used these 32, 5 all last season for game and the performance is great. I originally tried the black gold steel but didnt find them as good, the coking in the barrel was severe and they started to get louder the more i shot. How ever the vip steel performance was great cleaning the gun was alot better and as for wounding the birds. I think it people taking shots at birds out of range or out of skill distance. I would like to try the super steel in 3 and 4s but need a new gun for that and some targets that would be past my skill so ill pass.
Cracking session Rob , keep it up my man, !! Question for you, how do you find the cost of the steel, rather than the lead please?? Thanks keep smiling and stay safe. Ian.J. 👍👍🏴🏴
Thanks Ian! I’ll try my best 👍 the steel is more expensive than most pigeon lead loads unfortunately but this will probably change if lead is phased out. But until that time, lead all the way 😄👍
Is there a cutoff date when lead will be no longer sold in the UK? As continental Europe has been shooting steel for quite some time it is supprising to see you guys still shooting lead :)
When I can't shoot lead any more I'm selling my lovely matched pair of Perazzi's and going fishing instead, not that theres much fish left to catch either. I'm 68 years old and I've seen the best of it, I'll leave the 30 yard steel shells to the next generation I personally dont agree with using it on live quarry.
24g steel 7s in 20g brilliant .... Dont get stuck with the 1/2 choke max , Steel 7s very good in full or extra full . I use with good effect 24g steel 3s in 20g 3/4 choke an do well on the geese .
As with lead shot, I had good and bad results using steel. That being said I'm very sure my proficiency (or the lack thereof) as a shooter has more to do than the material used. I just wished the Eley with eco wads were available here. Using lead or not is a foul discussion - but throwing plastic into nature is not.
Yeah because they are clearly not working in this video….. Just so you know, I am supported by Eley so I can afford to create these video for everyone to watch for free 👍 Sorry if that’s a problem for you
All very well-BUT! we need some cartridges that match the 32grm price of normal leadloads. Not these or Gamebore new steel which will price the normal shooter out of shooting. NO! Animals have been killed with ingested plastic wads. And these biowads cost too much. As small steel shot will cause little or no damage to barrels; why not load them like the old Winchester loads with a felt wad and a wrap. l load some of my 8bore like this. We have got to keep the price down!
@thesheepman220 yes mate. You need to forget that , get yourself a modern steel safe gun , extended full choke and super steel 4s andshoot some pigeons
Totally agree, my friend. Obviously we have shot together many times and share many of the same opinions regarding steel etc. I use extra full for most of my shooting with steel, and bigger shot sizes are not necessary better. Also, the ridiculous velocities that many Americans subscribe to, are also not necessary. For me, an ounce of steel 5 at 1300 fps, is an ideal load for pigeons, crows etc..
It works, up to a point. But it’s just, plainly, not as good. You cannot argue with physics and your own field testing . Why some try to convince others there’s no difference is beyond me. Perhaps they’re happy to jump on the latest band-wagon of political correctness and wokeism? Each to their own I suppose just don’t shove my nose in it, I’m fully happy continuing as I am with lead shot thank you. 😊
Works up to a point exactly 👍 I won’t be using steel until I have to but good to find out for myself what it is capable of. Absolutely fine for dispatching decoying birds I have discovered 😄
great to see someone that's keen to keep lead. Too many people joining the steel bandwagon i feel
100%. I will be using lead by choice until they take it away from us 👍
@elemental4rce spot on mate 👍😉

I love these modern super fast steel loads, I occasionally use lead still, but I do love steel! And they are cheaper too!😁

My thoughts exactly on the 7s ref shot count. Good shooting though.
Thank you Mark! Yeah seemed to work well on them. Certainly a better result than I had expected 👍
Used steel for 32 years, yes it works! Standard steel and 1/2 - 3/4 - or full choke is really good. 32 gram 4's the best when you push the distance.
Brilliant! Glad to hear this! Thank you for the information bud 👍
Try a no3...even better 😊

Very interesting results with the steel; very shocked to see the 24g 7s performing like that on live quarry
It works fine. We have used steel in Denmark 🇩🇰 for a long time 😀
Great video rob you and Geoff both shot well as always 👍
Thank you 👍👍
In Denmark we have shot With steel for many years. No problem there. I have been a profesional goose hunter for 20 years. Steel just kills them.
That’s reassuring to hear 👍 I have a lot to learn about steel
Another great video Rob, well done.
Geoff.
Thank you bud! 👍
Another great video with the pair of you shooting some far out birds, good laugh in the very well camouflaged hide 👏👏
Thank you David! Always a good laugh in the hide 😄👍

Great shooting as ever there Rob, keep up the good work. How do they compare price wise with lead cartridges?
Thanks bud! Much appreciated! They compare very similar to the price of game loads of lead 👍
Cole Townsend just put a video out using 39g of Steel 8 shot on Canadas. Very impressive
well done Rob, great video
Thank you Nigel! 👍
very Nice.. Steel. for young crows.... big kiss
👍👍
where can i buy decoys like yours?
Interesting but no cake of the day 😮😂
🤣🤣 I completely forgot! It was a classic hide snack of Colin’s!
Great video rob 🎉
what do you do with all the dead corvids while done shooting
Also how are you finding your acme crow caller
Thank you! Normally incinerated bud. Not too good.. I’ve broken 2 so far 🤣 I keep biting it too hard when doing the jackdaw call
I've found the 5 shot a great cartridge with the dissolving eco wad. And the shot birds are safe for raptors to eat?
👍👍
What time do you start shooting? I've always gone early when after the crows.
Never really go too early bud as I’ve got a young daughter who has stopped early starts in the hide 😂
Muy fácinantes videos de cazeria amigos saludos chevre caza
👍👍
Muy elegante arma de cazeria amigos saludos
👍👍
How far away from the hide do you set the decoys? It's hard to tell through the footage.
Roughly 15 yards to the first decoy. Planning a video on the different ranges so stay tuned 👍
Is there a cutoff date when lead will be no longer sold in the UK?
As continental Europe has been shooting steel for quite some time it is supprising to see you guys still shooting lead :)
Lead is better and there’s been such push back in the uk lead will continue too be produced , i for one will always shoot lead
No date yet and I can’t see it happening any time soon which is good news 👍 I love lead

Interesting bud! I’ve got a lot to learn about steel loads for sure!
How bad was the residue in your barrels?
Quite a lot as to be expected from steel loads
@@fieldsportswithspeed is that powder residue? Why do you think that?
Sorry I meant how bad was the residue left behind by the wad?

What is the ‘intro’ music please?
Steel cartridge are good. How you lead the birds is what matters. Cripples act differently with steel.
👍👍
Eco wads are the way to go, can’t see any point in using steel shot and dropping plastic wads all over the countryside.
Absolutely agree bud 👍 so many degradable options for us to use in the field now
Can I ask you, do you get paid for this pest control?
I don’t no. Would be nice if I did!! Haha
Are you aware that the pellet sizes between steel & lead don’t correspond?
I am bud 👍
I think somebody on this video is sponsored by Eely I’ve used these and their shit you get loads of wounded birds
Yeah because they are clearly not working in this video….. Just so you know, I am supported by Eley so I can afford to create these video for everyone to watch for free 👍 Sorry if that’s a problem for you

Wait until you're brave enough to use tighter chokes with steel.
You won't miss lead
Oh really!? I’m intrigued now 🤣
@@fieldsportswithspeed Wildfowlers have been using steel for 24 years or so.
We have cracked the code
@@gerardcarlile5671 we are told not too use a tighter choke than half with steel because of the constriction of the steel shot though a tight choke
