In 1987 this song grabbed you and wouldn't let you go until it was over. In 2024, when I hear it, it still does the exact same thing. I have to listen. I have to sing. It's really one of the greatest songs ever written (which you can say that for about 10 of R.E.M.'s songs).
This was 23 year ago now. And the song was one of their older hits then. Amazing how time flies.

@Medium Rick Man, I Couldn't agree more. Orange Crush is one of their greatest, and so is the FULL 6:30 minute version of "GREAT BEYOND" which Michael always addresses to the audience about it being FOR Andy Kaufman (another genius).

Losing My Religion is deservedly iconic, but this song is just as good and just as important to REM's history.

I don’t know REM enough to say I think this is their best song but I sure as fuck love listening to it. Never gets old.
Couldn't agree more, it might be not their most technically varied songs but sur eone of their most catchy and nostalgic songs.
I recommend Drive, Everybody Hurts, and Man on the Moon if you never heard their music.

R.E.M. have done some absolutely BRILLIANT stuff. They have not just FANS, but so many other professional musicians who have been influenced by them, respect their musicianship... even ADAM DURITZ once said in a Rolling Stone.. "If there was one singer I'd like to be as good as, it would be Michael Stipe"... And after reading that, it's stuck in my head. They are very alike. R.E.M., even though they were never the most fantastic musicians, there's just something about them, even the replacement members(friends) that just WORKED. If they had kept going, I wonder what would have happened next. More classic songs??

I really liked Joey Waronker as a post-Berry drummer. Bill Rieflin was fantastic especially in the final years, but I loved Joey's energy and enthusiasm. He sounds like someone who was a fan of R.E.M and Bill Berry, but not trying to sound too like him too much. That's just me though.
@H Kay I'd honestly appreciate if people thought he brought too much personal identity to the band, that could be a concern when the live band is backing main players with an already-established legacy. But I reckon if I were to play with REM I'd play with just as much excitement :)
