I think it's so often overlooked how great the backing vocals sung by the bass player, Mike, is. "She's comin' down on her own, now. She's coming down on her own." He nailed it here live.
@@barbarapybus4049 Listen to the lyrics, especially the line, "a simple prop to occupy my time". Hardly romantic, is it? I read an interview with Michael Stipe some years ago where he stated that the song was about manipulation and using people.
I will *forever* enjoy the fact that this song is on mixtapes sent to peoples' sweethearts _despite_ it being one of the most savage breakup songs of all time; it's like putting "Zombie" by The Cranberries into a Halloween mix.
So much respect for mr. Stipe coming from someone on the other side of the aisle thanks for opening my eyes and mind to things i normally wouldn't have im a much better human being because of it
To me, at this speed, it loses some of the sinister aspect. I always thought this was a pretty creepy song. My band used to cover it. It was one of my favorites to play.
The Original Drummer who wrote all these great drum grooves and fills is Bill Berry... he retired to his farm in the late 90's. He is/was an excellent tasteful drummer for all the great REM hits...
Way too fast, that drummer needs to chill, he destroyed the groove. I don't understand why so many drummers speed up the songs to the point of sounding like shit.
Was introduced to REM in the late 80's and this song is still blinding in 2024 - thank you REM

Never listened to those backing vocals. You're right. Mysterious lyrics.
Sometimes I forget that R.E.M. was one of the best bands of the 80s-00s. Then I see them live and think, "Oh... yeah."
It is my opinion , but one of the best front men ever, and there will never be another REM.
Amazing song
REM- a band gone, but certainly not forgotten.
The one I love is NOT a love song.
Isn’t it? Why not? Just asking coz I’m interested.

@@buggulugs The song is probably about Stipe himself. He said in an interview he was a "cold ass bitch" to those he slept with as a young man.
What brilliant music. I absolutely love these guys. Genuine love & best wishes for them all ❤

Beautiful song ❤
One of my favorite songs by one of the greatest bands in music history.
Without a doubt
Incredible live performance! Man you would think the recorded track was playing! So good!
Definitely. Always loved this tune, and this performance is absolutely killer. Perfect amount of energy. REM was such a cool band.
One of the best rock songs ever, no doubt.
What a voice!!!! ❤❤❤
Great song....
The riff sounds similar to Neil Young’s Out of the Blue (and into the black) but I love R.E.M. and I’m sure Neil does, too.
And Morning Glory by oasis sounds like this lol
bands of today watch and learn
Indeed 👍
Forget singing...Michael Stipe's talking voice gives me goosebumps!
I thought Heisenberg's voice was powerful enough but man, hearing Michael was like "damn I wouldn't mess with him"
my favorite song since I was young
This one goes out to the one I love ; to the one that left me behind : I still love you , Chantelle
Move on, she wasn't the one. believe me, I've been there. You will find THE one and she needs you too.
@@youandwhosearmy6339 that's a nice thought - thank you
Drummer throwing down 🥁
Turn the vinyl a little faster, add a little more energy and you have this performance. Wow.
yeah ... the studio version is heavier and funkier all at once, because it's a tad slower
Right at the end , the bass player is singing while starting to slow his playing and not lose a beat or look at him fretboard. Pretty damn good!!
Michael Stipe is pure inspiration
Fantástico.
Absolutamente , paisano
♥️ pure love
The best

Damn, the drummer trying to push his sticks through the skins. 1:40

This song reminds me of Texarkana.

Who's the drummer?
Joey Waronker

@@LuvIsSuchAGame Great great drumming here! Amazing! Next Level!
@e-mail881 Speeding up in relation to what?
IMO: Waronker > Rieflin
Brilliant x ... The woman on keyboard is out of tune!

Agreed 💯 I was about to point out the same thing.
It’s a variation of the original and they’ve got every right to take those liberties.
@@Cluby2 and I have every right to say the song lost its groove
Not exactly a live band that liked to mix things up much. Every performance sounds exactly the same. Great song though obvs
