    Did you know Oase produce 3 different grades of pre-filter sponges ?
    They can all be use for various reasons and in this video I’ll talk about the 2 main grades that I use and at what point in an aquascapes life I use them.
    Hope you enjoy this video 🙏🏻

    I live in the US and just got a Biomaster 350 thermo. It came with the black sponges in the pre filter. I don't mind cleaning that out weekly at water changes, so the 60 works fine.

    Thank you!! Yeah I don't like opening my oase filter up either to change the filter floss as I had mostly biological Filtration in the basket so definitely gonna get some of these black 60ppi sponges 😊

    Actually there is 4 types of Oase pre-filter sponges. There is a black non-carbon 60 ppi and a carbon dipped black ~60 ppi. Reason I say "~60" for the carbon version is that it is actually the 45 ppi blue sponge that's used carbon sponge. After you clean the carbon version a few times, the carbon actually comes off and you'll see it's original blue color.
    For the US market the carbon pre-filter should come standard in all the Biomaster filters. Beware that the carbon WILL come off after a few months use if you clean it weekly.

    Thank you for this video. When will you be doing a video on how you clean you main filter sponge media and how you have your sponges/bio set up. I have my bottom tray with bio media then sponges all the rest sponges. I am thinking about doing two bottom trays with Bio media and rest sponges now that my tank is good to good. What do you think?

      My pleasure Fred🤙🏻
      I have actually done a video on the cleaning but its 30 minutes long as I talk far too much so I’ll do a shorter one tomorrow.
      In all my filters I always have at least 2 trays of bio media in the form of Seachem Matrix.
      The bottom tray I use for filter floss and I use floss until the plants have grown to a decent size and my tank has matured, that can be anywhere up to 5 months.
      Once the tank has matured I stop using floss and just place a standard 20ppi foam in its place.
      The top shallow tray I save for any chemical filtration I may need in the tanks lifetime.

      In the U.K. at the time of the video we could only get 3 different grades of pre filter sponges (official Oase).
      30ppi orange, 45ppi blue and 60ppi black carbon , I met the Oase rep in my LFS last year and he mentioned a 60ppi black standard was coming out.

    Thanks for the clear explanation. What is your experience with the sound the biomaster makes? I know someone who took out all the sponges to make it quieter. I have a eheim that hums and am thinking of buying the oasis because of the convenience. But to end up with annoying noise again is a bit stupid

    • @slinkyscapes8530
      @slinkyscapes8530  Год назад

      Hi Erna,
      I personally have had no issues with noisy biomasters or filtosmarts either.
      There will be a low humming as the motor works but nothing unexpected.
      The main reasons for any inconvenient noises would be air trapped in the sponges or filter head, the rubber feet missing or the filter touching the side of a cabinet (causing a rattle).
      I will say I’ve run Eheim filters in the past and they are even quieter so if the filter is sited in a bedroom or chill room then if it’s inside a cabinet you shouldn’t notice it at all.

      @@slinkyscapes8530 Super thanks!! It is so helpful to hear this from someone with experience. I now have 2 Eheim filters running, 1 of which gives a lot of hum that I can't find the reason for. The oasis pre-filter is of course super handy. But low noise is very important to me. Thanks again for your quick and clear answer. I can and will certainly take it into account in my decision.

    I am living in the tropics, my aquarium temperature about 29 deg. C, normally I will use a fan to cool it further to 26 deg. C, I am using Oase 250 Biomaster, I don't need to use the Oase Biomaster heater. Is it possible to fill the heater space with bio media or some custom fine filtration?

    • @slinkyscapes8530
      @slinkyscapes8530  2 года назад

      You could but the void the heater uses is the main flow path for water to reach the bottom of the canister, full it with something and you’ll restrict flow rate, nothing bad will happen just your flow rate will drop.

As I installed it together with OASE 300 Water Heater, but temperature was warmer or rather say really hotter compared to placing the heater in the aquarium itself. Can you advice me which option setup is the best placement for my water heater.

      You can place the heater where it suits you, having a heater inline or near the flow is more economical so you won’t need to have the heater set as high.
      I run my aquariums at 23dC (unless you have livestock that requires higher temps).
      One thing to remember is the temp selected on most* heater dials isn’t what it will be in the aquarium.

    I have a well planted 65 gallon tank with 6 Congo Tetras, 6 Odessa Barbs, 6 black neons, 3 black mollies. Cleanup crew of Cory’s, Kuhlis, panda Garra, Oto’s. Tank has been up for almost 2 years. Have a oase 600 bio master therno. What ppi do you recommend? I also have a Course sponge on the filter intake to keep out leaves.

    • @slinkyscapes8530
      @slinkyscapes8530  6 месяцев назад

      I run my Biomasters differently to the norm, I always run the finest sponge in the pre-filter I can get away with, (usually 45ppi once the aquarium is mature) to catch as much as I can then two trays of standard 20ppi blue tray sponges then the rest in bio media. I add a red 30ppi tray sponge to the shallow top tray.
      Your 65 gallons is roughly 250 litres and the Biomaster 600 pumps 1250lph empty,roughly 750- 1100 lph fully loaded up with sponges and media so your getting a 3-4 times turn around per hour.
      Are you getting enough flow around your set up ?

      I keep very small fish and not many at that compared to the size of my aquariums and like you I add floss and change it 2-3 months, depends how frivolous I’ve been with the food 🤣.

    Great vid with very useful content. Is the blue filter in the Oase trays a finer sponge than the orange prefilter one at 30ppi? What do you think of the new Eheim filters?

    • @slinkyscapes8530
      @slinkyscapes8530  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Dom 🤙🏻.
      The blue tray sponges are 20ppi,Oase designed them as biological media, which will work but just not as efficient as actual bio media.
      The downside to actual bio media is it slows flow down, especially Matrix or gravel types like Eheim substrat pro.
      Yes, I got to see the new Eheim 5e 350 a couple of weeks ago.
      Some great improvements on the 4e but as I only saw it out of the box I didn’t get to play around with the Wi-Fi settings. Looks gimmicky tbh and Eheim could have put innovation elsewhere. Price is still sky high and there’s no heater available until you get to the 5e 600 which is a shame.
      Heard a rumour Eheim may be dropping thermo models altogether as they can’t compete with Oase in design and price.

    • @slinkyscapes8530
      @slinkyscapes8530  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Vito, use the same pre filters for Marine as you would in freshwater.
      The only difference is I wouldn’t use the carbon impregnated pre filters, there’s no need.

  • @russelayers5802
    @russelayers5802 6 месяцев назад

    The higher the number for the pre filter, the more Porous it is. The red is 30 ppi which is the least Porous which traps the most debris. The blue is 45 ppi and the black is 60 ppi. I use the 60 ppi. I have found the 30 and 45 clog up in a week or less. The 60 can go two weeks. I also have a sponge filter on my intake rod that is 60 ppi.

    • @slinkyscapes8530
      @slinkyscapes8530  6 месяцев назад

      Correct in the higher the PPI number/rating the more pores per inch but as the more pores per inch there is the smaller the pores get the quicker they clog up as it will catch more debris so a 60ppi sponge will always clog faster than say a 30ppi sponge as it’s catching more debris, so I’m not sure why your 30ppi pre-filter sponge is clogging faster than when you try the 60ppi.
      It’s why some people, more so in the Aquascaping hobby, place filter floss in one of the filter trays (usually after the pre-filter and any main canister filter sponges), as it’s so fine it catches any micro particles not caught before hand.
      Now the speed on which a pre-filter ‘clogs’ depends on the livestock and any planting, the larger (in size or numbers) the livestock inevitably the more they eat and the more they excrete, same with plant mass, the more there is the more leaves/blades will die off and hopefully caught by the pre-filter.
      When the Biomaster was first launched they produced a 90ppi carbon impregnated pre filter sponge which was a great for my Scaping set ups as it soaked up the tannins from any wood I’d added and caught nearly all debris but I’m not sure if Oase still produce them or if 60ppi is the finest they market now.

    • @slinkyscapes8530
      @slinkyscapes8530  Год назад

      Hi Chris,
      Start at the head, pipes etc.
      Have you cleaned the impeller? I find cleaning the pre filter head also works as it contains simple flap valves (I’ve done a video).
      After the head all you have are simple trays which very rarely get clogged.
      Once the head and pre filter is clean/clear as well as pipes /inflow/outflow then the only reason it would slow is a faulty motor/magnet.

  • @igorverdes

    The black carbon sponge isn’t specific on what is adsorbs, its activated carbon on a sponge which doesn’t have a long-life span in general but will adsorb anything from medication to fertiliser it doesn’t really matter. Just felt I had to clarify that. Other than that solid vid keep it up.

    • @slinkyscapes8530
      @slinkyscapes8530  2 года назад +2

      Great point Zach, activated carbon can be really effective in aquariums but for planted tanks can be problematic on complex molecular chains like Iron that’s been chelated with ferrous gluconate. I also remember reading a report that it can wipe out doses of trace elements due to their molecular structure and micro amounts dosed.
      Luckily for us it’s adsorption on macro nutrients is low to none.
      Apparently ADA use it in their scapes in most of the galleries due to the above as they favour extremely low levels of Iron and carbons ability to purify water of any tannins. They also state carbon helps stabilise ecosystems quicker ( though no evidence has been put forward to back the claim up ).
      I favour purigen over carbon but that’s purely based on the fact I don’t like spending money 🤣🤣.

    • @EliteFTW8
      @EliteFTW8 2 года назад +1

      @@slinkyscapes8530 that’s some interesting stuff thanks for the reply, I haven’t used purigen but have heard good things. I had a lot of problems with nitrates because my tap water started at 40 ppm so the solution water reverse osmosis soo haven’t used activated carbon just in case any fertiliser get adsorbed. Getting a lot better water quality now but has been a nightmare sorting it out. Slight tangent but felt compelled to say 😂😂

    You want the pre filter to be course

    • @slinkyscapes8530
      @slinkyscapes8530  2 года назад +1

      That depends on how you want your filter to work, a course pre filter will only catch particles larger than the pores, meaning everything else is getting into your main filter housing so you’ll need a medium and fine sponge inside the main housing, which leads to more regular strip downs.
      I want to leave my main filter as untouched as possible, hence the reason for a pre filter.
      It’s purely personal choice and there is no right or wrong way, only the way you like 👍🏻

      I wash them out while doing my weekly water changes.
      I find that by running 60ppi prefilter sponges my matrix media stays cleaner for longer.
      I also find I don’t need to place filter floss in the main canister so I only go in my main filter housing every 4-6 months to carry out maintenance, for me this leads to more stable eco system.
