  • “Last week, May 9th-11th, the first swell of the season arrived in Indonesia, and it was the perfect swell for Desert Point,” Bordallo reports. “However, the Indonesian government decided to close all airports and ferries from May 6th-17th so people wouldn’t travel during Ramadan, preventing large gatherings from happening. The only way to get to Desert Point was by private boat, or traveling before the restrictions on May 6th and staying at Lombok until the reopening of airports and ferries. I decided to go by sailboat with Bruno Santos and some friends, so we could surf the first good swell of the season.”

      I’m sorry but I think I have to disagree. Not that many points barrel that hard at the beginning and at the end of an extremely long wave in the middle of nowhere with no wetsuit necessary and no worries. Prove me wrong brother.

    With 10-20 years experience and a lot of talent, some people can enjoy those waves.

    • @bonbondesel
      @bonbondesel 3 года назад +1

      Yeah true it's not for everyone. I would not say 20 years of surfing experience with a lot of talent.
      I would say having learned and lived on a place or places with serious waves espacially reef breaks, working most time of the year.
      It's often a matter of environment.
      I'm from Reunion Island and have a very low level compared to most locals at home. Many many people from home didn't have serious issues with surfing this wave in decent conditions. The very heavy days of course are something else.
      You take a very medium level surfer practicing weekly for 10 years from Hawaii, Tahiti, Canary Islands, etc, they would be able to surf this wave.
      If you're from Cocoa Beach and rerely moved out from there and if you are not an exception like Kelly Slater, yes, you'd better have 15 years of surfing behind with some talents.
      I know it's not my standard, I'm toi old for this. But some years earlier with a bit of work...
      Indonesia also have extremely talented surfers. It's not difficult to understand why.

      Wow iv never replied to three comments before to the same vid but you clearly contradicted yourself and if any one from Florida would read this then they might get offended. First of all Florida has way too many kids and old guys that rip just as hard if not harder than anyone anywhere. Please trust me I lived there for almost a decade and surfed some of the best waves of my life on many hurricane swells and even some cold fronts in the winter time. By the way it gets cold as shit in the winter and tons of sharks and victims as well. I am from California and I hate to say it but there are more rippers in Florida. We get some good waves here but there are so many longboarders and guys that ride funny shapes that are easy to paddle but hard or almost impossible to throw any tail. I’m old in my mid forties and started getting arthritis but I still love to travel to new countries and surf perfect warm waves with nice people, I treat everyone with respect even at home but as always there are some ignorant people out there and in the end sometimes you need to have a talk with these people and tell them the rules because maybe nobody ever taught them. So let this be a lesson to you my friend, don’t judge people because just like dropping in on someone it’s not nice. Also one more thing I have seen inexperienced people get barreled on nice big perfect days but to catch a crappy knee to waist windy and choppy wave and kill it. Well that is true talent no matter where you live.

      @@just1voice994 I obviously offended you and my comment could have offended people from Florida. It was not my purpose so please accept ly excuses.
      You're right to tell me that.
      I don't know Florida and may have a stereotypical vision of it.
      I was just putting a very vague and general comment and didn't see the stereotypes that it could bring.
      I just wanted to express my point of view that people are very very shaped by their environment and I'm sure Florida has great waves and so many competitive surfers that it makes very good riders.
      That's just my thought.
      I know there has always been a lot of shark attacks in Florida and I deeply worked on the data and people working there for shark studies. I also know what people pass through during shark attacks. But it is sadly a fact, Reunion Island has the most fatal rate of shark attacks per mile and people population in the water. It doesn't mean that Florida does not suffer from shark attacks. Reunion Island follows the path of Recife Brazil and bathing and surfing is still banned on the whole island except some places sometimes. It's been like this for seven years. While Recife in Brazil have this ban for more than 20 years now...
      I've worked 8 years on this subject and lost friends in the shark issue in Reunion Island. I was attacked too. The situation is just abnormal here because it is man made. I won't expand on this very controversial and sensitive subject.
      Sorry for the offense and thank you for the lesson. I didn't know this could hurt as much.
      I also had the luck to travel and always respected the locals and never have any trouble even with the white shorts in Mauritius.
      You made me see that my comment was a misplaced generalisation from me on a internet. Thank you.
      I have the ability to recognize my mistakes when I do it.
      Friendly.
      Chriss from Reunion Island, 40 year old with a health issue disabling me to surf again.
      Aloha my friend.

      @@bonbondesel I am from Florida, you are 100% correct. I have surfed my whole life and am almost your age. I've seen Florida get big an good only a few times, and most places close out in those conditions. If I go to Mexico, Indo, or anywhere else with surf, I need time to acclimate. We just don't get big hold downs or have the fear of taking a big set on the head in Florida beachbreak. We have a few reefs but they work MAYBE once a year. There are a lot of guys that really shred here, but we aren't going to do a whole lot in big surf lol. Maybe after a week in Bali to tune up!

    • @bonbondesel
      @bonbondesel 3 года назад

      @@squarecracker Thanks bro ! It makes me remember that even if I come from a place with very consistant swells with a lot of good reef brakes, Padang is scary to me when it gets big, while locals shred it like a beachbreak !
      Of course some people are naturally gifted, but the environment plays a great role. Emulation and competition also. If you look at the gold coast, this is one of the most competitive places in the world and it plays a great role.
      For example Jeremy Flores is from Reunion Island. I saw him evolve when he was a kid. Even with very good quality waves almost everyday and a huge training since very young, he wouldn't have come to this level if he was not living for a while on the gold coast and in South West of France. It raised his level. Because you need to confront to others to evolve.
      People having serious consitent breaks at home and travelling a lot are more likely to have a good level in the minimum amount of time.
