    1. It's okay to be inspired, but don't copy other RUclipsrs.
    2. Know what your "story" is before you star recording.
    3. Don't underestimate the importance of sound quality.
    4. Shot composition.
    5. Pay attention to lighting and exposure.
    6. Don't use unnecessary insert shots. Insert shots can make sense if they improve the flow and storyline of your video, but when they're unnecessary they can kill the video.
    7. Limit your transitions to what makes sense for your content.
    8. There's such a thing as too much B-roll.
    9. Don't make shots "cinematic" when they aren't cinematic in nature.
    10. Cut out dead space, a.k.a. long pauses and lingering moments. There's an exception when the time between shots is motivated.
    11. Too much chit-chat can be just as bad as dead space. Cut it down in post.
    12. Use music that is both proper and copyright-free.
    13. Have a schedule. At the bare minimum, upload a video every week (unless you're The Piano Guys).
    14. Try new things.
    15. It doesn't pay enough for you to do it for the money.
    16. Be human.
    17. Don't just do product reviews of the newest thing.
    18. Content matters more than your gear.
19 and 20. Impatience leads to burnout. Burnout leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.

With hope of starting intellectual conversation:
I don’t understand why every RUclipsr says “don’t do it for the money”. If it’s your hobby then sure you do it ONLY because you love it, but if this is your job then making money IS an important part of that and there is no shame in that. You can’t spend your time making this high quality content with no return. If there was no money to be made on youtube then we would be seeing much less quality videos and that would negatively effect everyone . I want my favorite creators to make as much money as possible because that is what ensures that they will keep creating better and better videos.
I think what those saying this mean to say is “don’t do youtube expecting to get rich” or “don’t do youtube if you hate it, but just want money”. Because like you said it will take a long time to make a living from it, there is no guarantee. And the best content comes from those passionate about what they do.
I think this is what you mean, but when you say it like “don’t do it for the money” it’s kinda misleading since I hardly think most RUclipsrs could do what you are doing, with the high quality equipment and time commitment, for free.

They say it because everyone pretends that our sole focus is on virtuous and noble aims. Riiiiight. The only people that don't do it for the money first, are those who have a spouse with lots of money or a real job. Yeah, most of us want to help people also, but nobody trapped in a shitty low wage job is doing it without an eye towards making money and improving their life. Like everything else on social media, it's pretend/BS. Just say I want money as priority one and I'd prefer to make money doing something I like second and third, I'd like to help others. This is the truth.

I upload my videos sometimes 3 days in advance but schedule it to become public at noon on Fridays. It helps me to be consistent with my content instead of having to guess at the time it will take to upload and process a video. =) Hope this helps.

I really leaned a lot from these tips! Thank you Jeven. The big take away whenever I watch your content is that you are able to insert techniques (transitions, b roll, composition) without drawing attention to it. It is understated and that makes the videos really work and sets you apart from some of the overproduced creators out there.

  • @jonesesjourneys2299
    @jonesesjourneys2299 5 лет назад +40

Great tips Jeven. If I could add a twenty-first tip, it would be to tone down the audio levels of the music to the narration, so that it doesn't JACK up to eleven when the music comes on. A lot of viewers are watching these on their television, with surround sound (like us), and when youtubers cut to b-roll, the music is RIDICULOUSLY loud. I've had a neighbor complain once because of it, and now I have to wield my remote like a gun ready to fire, so that when the music hits, i can mute it till i turn it down, then back up again when it's over. It's a pain in the ass, and an easy fix in post. That would probably be my biggest complaint to most of the creators that I watch regularly.

I think a lot of creators don't really go through and watch what they've put together, otherwise they'd catch those mistakes. It's an issue I've been learning to reign in, the default volume of the music import is WAY louder than what my camera records, I wind up setting background tracks to 3-6% volume and not letting them exceed around 86% for foreground... Editing is quite a pain

This was a really good video! I'm not a youtuber, nor do I want to be one, but I've often wondered about how it all works. I'd like to add a few things that I personally have liked or disliked about videos.
    1. If a video is between 15 and 20 mins. I'm much more likely to watch it. Beyond that, unless it's super interesting forget it! I just won't get into it!
    2. Definitely the sound quality counts big time! If the sound sucks the entire video sucks, plain and simple.
    3. Click-bait titles. I hate 'em! I'll leave a video within a minute or two when it isn't what it says it is in the title. No questions asked! Don't waste my time!
    4. Going into the "chat" and people aren't nice. Forget it, I leave. Too "high school" for me! I feel the poster of the video has some responsibility to keep his chat friendly. Maybe others would disagree but that's just how I feel.
    5. This is REALLY important to me. If your "intro" drags on and on, I'll leave. Can't stand to sit thru more than about 30 seconds of an intro, and that's even long!
I think that's about it. Just wanted to toss in my 2 cents! Thanks for this video, it had good content!

Great video, man. It's funny, cos I decided to go back to being a creative 24/7 not long ago (8 months now) and I have been overwhelmed. Not gonna lie. It's been awesome being able to just create content - music being my number one, alongside my videos for them - but there is a certain aspect of anxiety that follows. "Where is the SOCIAL validation?", "where is the money gonna come from?", "am I doing enough?". So I think you touch on those points really well. AAAAND, coincidentally or not, I found your video because TODAY I decided to get out of my comfort zone and just start vlogging. Yep. I think we overthink this too much. I shoot all of my videos on a phone with the intention of learning as much as I can from it before wasting money on expensive cameras that I have no idea how to use, you know expanding as I go. I think I can learn Alot from just shooting videos and putting them together. It really gives you a perspective on how much time and effort nicely composed scenes take.

CONTENT REQUEST: Thanks again Jeven! I notice you adjusting for exposure as you walk. Can you tell us more about how you adjust settings, particularly on the move, like as you walk in this video? How are you monitoring your exposure or are you just that experienced and aware of changes in light, etc? Also, adjusting focus, like on a plane coming in for a landing. The camera may want to focus on the clouds when the plane is a ways away, etc. How do you handle manual focusing? Thanks for the outstanding content, BTW!

Get autofocus in center for vlogs and then just look straight into the barrel of the lens, you will always be in focus. I have no tips for manual focus but learning it by doing it often. For exposure on the fly use a variable ND filter, I won't ever leave the house without mine! Best regards!

Surprisingly , I think I’m ready to be a full RUclipsr because I have not made most of these mistakes! I’m not saying I’m perfect , BUT I am staying true to my authentic self , and I’ve actually had a lot to patient and I can see things moving slowly but I’m having so much fun doing what I love! It’s not about the clout or all that , it’s about being able to look back and be so proud of all your work! I think that’s the best part of being a content creator! 😌
Also you forgot an Important one, DON’T PRETEND TO BE SOME ONE OR SOMETHING YOUR NOT! Cause you’ll only get lost and end up hating not being able to be who you really wanna be when you get tired of being something your not !

I actually disagree about the random insert shot you used. I think it's useful because it shows some more on the nice scenary around you, and breaks up the rhythm of close head shots. If it was 30 seconds it would definitely be unnecessary, but I think a few seconds of walking on a log is fun, and toleraable even for the most impatient of viewers :)
Still, this is very nice list, well done!

I've been making content since 2011, this channel since 2014; and I've been trying many different methods and have driven myself into a hole of demotivating hell. I've slowly been working my way out of this nonsense and started just to do and not think how it will turn out. My main flaws are the fact that my uploading is random, and letting my surroundings limit me. I have my friends to thank that help me drive forward!
