1991 - Got Surfer Rosa. Still not been able to see Pixies live but I did get to hang with Charles on a sidewalk outside a club he was gonna play a solo gig at in 2008. I wore my band's shirt that has the angry nun on it, to the show.

Reminds me a little of Metric. Pixies sounded great last summer tour, as good or better than seeing them in Boston around '89. These 2 songs are a post-capitalist dream: dead malls, halloween shows, eating mutton and drinking mead just because... and Que Sera, Sera is Too Bad kids, AI is taking all your jobs.

What happened to the quiet and loud dynamics that became the signature for old pixies songs?
That dynamic was oversold, but I do hear an abrupt volume boost in the intro
In fact, three-quarters of Pixies songs don't follow the Loud-Quiet-Loud rule at all.
You know how it sounds like each bar starts a little bit early but it's still like a basic 4/4 beat, how do you explain that musically? I'm just curious because it REALLY comes across when listening but I don't know if there's a proper way to explain it beyond "the singing just starts ahead of the beat"
It's called playing ahead of the beat
The verse and a lot of the chorus has two bars of 4/4 and one bar of 6/4, which gives it a lopsided feeling

I love the original Pixies (1987-1991). Unfortunately I feel like I've been listening to a different band since the reunion (except for a few exceptions in some songs), it also seems like they give more importance to the lyrics rather than the overall impactful and heavy sound but I'm still happy that they're still a working band.

@@lilpentolasullatrappola Those are all great tracks off of probably his best work. His self-titled debut is awesome. Teenager of the Year is probably the easiest one to get into for Pixies fans. Cult of Ray is alright but a step down. From there, he kind of follows his own muse and his work is hit or miss. I think the self-titled Frank Black and the Catholics record is really good. Dog in the Sand and Pistolero are also really good ones. I think you'll find a lot to like if you go down the rabbit hole.

@@jcmick8430 There are some good songs on the new albums. 'Greens and Blues" is one of the best IMO. But Pixies have dropped it (and the rest of Indie Cindy from their shows.) Shame.

Sorry Pixies , extremely disappointed . I own enough Frank Black albums to confidently state this track sounds like his solo work. Bummers not bc I don’t like his solo work but because it doesn’t have that Pixies feel or sound . Kim not being there is another hugely missing element to their sound .
I think it’s important to mention my mate and I went thru about 5 come on pilgrims cassettes , 3 surfer Rosa”s and 2 Doolittle’s from wearing out the tape from being played nonstop in 1991
