    You need to place the thermal pads directly on the ssd! not the other way around like you're doing!, once you make sure the thermal pad is covering the controller close the laptop case and it'll stay in place! the reason why your other thermal pad is on the laptop case is because the sticky part was stronger on the case side and since you lift it it came together but at the factory those thermal pads are placed directly on the SSD's and then you close the case

    • @FromDesertTown
      @FromDesertTown 2 года назад +3

      Sometimes the thermal pad sticks to the case even when you properly apply the pad to the SSD then close the laptop case. It's because the laptop case has more surface area to cling to the thermal pad than the SSD does. Also, the laptop case can have rough material with many small bumps and crevices on it which cling to thermal pads.

    Thanks for this video. I couldn't figure out why 2 Crucial 2TB SSDs in a row kept throwing I/O errors in my HP Envy, yet when I plug one into a USB M2 adapter it was smooth sailing. A thermal pad is the next thing for me to try.

    Couldn't you also peel the backing off one side of the pad, lay the pad sticky side up onto the SSD then put the back in place (without the screws) to attach it to be back?

    Heads up, the controller is the part that needs to be cooled. If you cool the SSD flash too much, you impact the flash performance and ability to function. Linus Tech Tips did a video on liquid cooling an SSD and goes into a bit of detail on this. You can cut the write endurance (SSD lifespan) in half by cooling the flash just to room temp.
