In 2016, my parents got me tickets to Smashmouth as a graduation present. They were playing in some obscure suburb in my home state. I was only 14, but I had the time of my life. Everyone was drunk off their ass singing along, tossing onions and crowd-surfing a giant inflatable Shrek via moshpit. Smashmouth knew damn well people were there just because of the Shrek meme-and they loved it. They were fully in on it and had just as much fun as everyone partying alongside them.
Rest in peace, Steve Harwell. I hope Shreaven is a swamp like no other.

Reddit's wrong actually: Katzenberg wasn't fired, he was passed over for that promotion due to two major factors - how he handled the Robin Williams marketing situation during Aladdin, and the Black Friday Cut of Toy Story.
That said, most of early DreamWorks REALLY looks like it was made specifically to spite or compete with Disney or Pixar, though I believe they started growing out of it around Kung Fu Panda.

He was also denied promotion because he rushed into it WAY TOO QUICKLY after the tragic and untimely death of Frank Wells, the former holder of that position. Instead of reading the room and realizing it would be best to respect the dead for a moment, he ended up looking like he was slobbering over a higher position and couldn't wait for the role to be vacated.
Shrek Forever After is underrated and deserves more respect.
Thanks to Schaffrilas Productions, it has gotten more respect. I agree with what he said, which was that Shrek 1, 2, and 4 were very good. But Shrek 3 damaged the franchise in a way it can never recover from.
I wrote a shrek fanfic for standardized testing we had to take In high school. The teachers told us it didn’t matter since they changed the test from the year prior.
I can see why Dreamworks waited until recently to go along with Shrek 5. The internet probably gave the company more attention and money than they ever thought. Regardless if said attention is good or not.

Shrek has rebound from genuine enjoyment to ironic enjoyment and back to genuine enjoyment. When you take the memes and 4chan out of the equation, the first two Shrek films are genuine masterpieces of animation.
The fourth is an underrated gem. Probably the most overtly emotional of the films. 3 can go to hell, it doesn't exist.

Fun fact, the guy who wrote Shrek the Musical actually lives in my parents' neighborhood and...you know how some neighborhoods have That House that goes absolutely balls-to-the-wall with Christmas decorations covering practically every foot of their property? Somehow that Puss in Boots Netflix series was in a weird untouched state when it was in the works. Whenever a season came out, no one talked about it. And yet it was able to get a full 6 season run with a definitive ending. And why do I know this? Because I was the only one who watched that show to the end as a kid.
