      @Infinite_Jester 5 лет назад +98

      @Anonymous it's not common sense though. It's an application of a video game trope (although it arguably has roots in folk tales and older symbolism).
      A lot of things that are clear as day to us can appear quite convoluted to people with no experience in video games (e.g. that red barrels/boxes implies interactive explosives).

    For those struggling early on in Fort Joy, you're not alone. I felt the same way, it seemed like I was just barely scraping by in what seemed like normal fights. However, I kept at it, kept experimenting and learning more about all the different skill trees and how they worked and interacted with others, and suddenly, it was like I cleared a hurdle and was finding fights that I struggled with before to be much simpler. It'll click, just give it time, this game is well worth it.

I've done runs where I killed as little as possible, and I've done runs where I went on a rampage and took out every Magister I could find. That's what makes the game so fun, there are a myriad of ways to approach any given scenario.

      No it’s really not. Literally the entire "turorial" is just half baked mechanics and bad story quests which want to GIVE the illusion you can do it multiple ways but in reality it wants you to pick specific classes with specific skills and if you don’t well fuck you.

    For anyone struggling in the beginning on fort joy there are 3 characters around a table playing a card game. Avoid those characters, have restoration spell, first aid, restoration scroll, or migo's ring. Head (I believe) south towards the cave and you'll find a man on his back. Use healing spell on that man and he'll reward you with a card you can use to win that game. You'll get gold and if you want can still kill those 3 characters

    The thing about these early Divinity fights is that you don't know much about the inner workings of the game. Let me just list some more advanced tips:
    1) If you engage in conversation with an enemy before an inevitable fight, you can buff the ever living crap out of the character in dialogue and the buffs won't tick down. You can also modify the environment with either water, oil, or poison without enemies noticing you as long as you neither attack directly in front of them or hit them with the attack. Rain in particular is great for certain fights if you have a high level Aerotheuge in your party.
    2) Having 2 levels in Aerotheurge is practically mandatory for any build due to Teleportation, Nether Swap, and Uncanny Evasion. These skills are practically the penultimate in battlefield manipulation and are essential tools for setting up combos or staying alive in a pinch.
    3) Jar of Mind Maggots + Empty Grenade = A 4 turn charm grenade with massive range. This thing is amazing at trivializing difficult fights. Make sure not to sell them though because there's a very limited number of them that spawn throughout the game.
    4) Instantaneous movement skills such as Tactical Retreat, Cloak and Dagger, and Phoenix Dive are pretty much required for any build to have at least one of. Ranged builds should definitely take advantage of the Huntsman requirement to gain Height damage boosts as well as Tactical Retreat, where as physical type players would benefit most from either using Phoenix Dive or Spread your Wings. Cloak and Dagger is most useful when positioning yourself for a preemptive strike against a group of enemies, but is typically the weakest of all the movement skills when outside of sneaking or invisibility.
    5) On Classic or harder difficulties, you can cheese out a ton of rare gear by either late in Act 1 or early in Act 2 and onwards by investing heavily in Lucky Charm on one of your party members. At around 6 or 7 points invested, you will start to see Legendary items drop pretty frequently, allowing you to adequately gear your team through the drops alone, or from the gold that you would get from selling them.
    6) Raise your attitude with crucial vendors who you want to either sell to or buy from. For a fraction of the price in either gold or goods (typically goods is better since donations are given at a non-diminished value), you can donate to a character to improve their prices on items when buying or selling. This is on top of and despite the Bartering skill, allowing you to essentially avoid the Bartering skill for the entirety of Act 1 until you can take advantage of the mirror on the Lady Vengeance. Keep in mind though, if you get in combat with any NPC and Flee, they will instantly drop to -45 attitude despite their previous number.
    7) Make your own pixie dust as much as possible. You can create bone & star dust by combining Mortar and Pestle with any bone or stardust herb respectively. This is important because these materials are used in refining runes into a higher rank or creating runes from scratch.
    8) Herb mixes can be stocked up in the Undertavern in Act 2. When combining these with a drudanae pipe, you can get a strong 50 turn duration buff which can be used on much harder fights in order to trivialize them. You can also combine these herb mixes with certain void-tainted fish in order to make them a 100 turn duration (just keep trying to combine the herb mixes with every different kind of void-tainted fish to find out the recipes).

    here's the most valuable tip imho. when you finish. if you think you wasted some level points up in fort joy you do not despair. you board a ship to leave fort joy in the end of act 1. there is a mirror in the lowest level of that ship you can literally go back there anytime you want and rearrange your whole level points there. I started this game 3 times over without leaving fort joy thinking I fcked up my build and need to start over. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO START OVER you can keep rebuilding your character if you find a cool spell you wanna main along the way. I started with a rogue, died too much then converted that character into a wayfarer ranged spell caster.

The only thing that's missing are your party formations, I can't recall how many times I've been AOD' at the beginning of combat because my formation was fucked up, I had no idea that was a thing. Get Sebille, make her Necromancer, Polymorph, High defense, pick lone wolf perk, and make sure you enrage Ifan as much as possible, You will 1-2 hit almost everything.(Support Ifan with living on the edge and use teleport gloves from the crocs to manage early crowds)

    For those who struggle in the beginning I recommend either making a dwarf custom character or taking a point into sneak in character creation. There is a point where you can steal items from the origin characters and I recommend it, take it all. After getting to fort joy you can recruit then and they'll have an inventory once again. If you don't plan on taking someone like beast for example recruit him anyway so you can grab extra items. If this has changed in the new version someone please correct me.

    Tip for anyone planning on taking long breaks from this game: Take notes! How you are using/building your characters, organize inventory where perhaps a character holds all items you plan to sell, craft, etc. Where you are in the story and quests you are focusing on. Reason: after a 2 year hiatus, I found myself to concerned with screwing up my progress/build/inventory I never touched my save. Sure you can make another one but its a rough game to learn let alone start over. I forgot have the stuff dudes talking bout smh.

    One of the biggest things I recommend to new players is a Lone Wolf playthrough with 1 companion. Idk why but I found my game got significantly easier on the combat front when I did & I also could focus on other things as opposed to the constant micro of equipment for a 4 person party.

    Choosing a class, attributes, skills, etc before beginning an RPG is like being forced to choose your college major when you are 10 years old: Unreasonable and unfair to expect anyone to make an informed decision with so little knowledge and experience, almost guaranteeing you’ll have regrets later. It’s still my favorite genre, but it’s very, very irritating unless you can alter the choices you’ve made mid-game. This video is an example of that. So...
    ... If you want to make the learning curve softer, start on explorer and switch to classic once you have some equipment. Starting on classic may give you a bad impression if you’ve never played before but stick with it. Remember that all RPGs on a harder difficulty (Witcher 3’s hardest difficulty comes to mind), are only brutal until you get the hang of it. Smart playing can even make you OP. Do whatever you can to keep playing because persistence will be rewarded with one of greatest RPGs in gaming and quitting would be a damn shame.

    - ifan: ranger, warfare skill
    - sebille: rogue, warfare skill
    - lohse: wizard, air and water
    Was considering swapping one of them for fane (lock the lockpicks, maybe Ifan, so the Red Prince can multiclass with ranger) and have him as an inquisitor. any suggestions on how to improve my team will be most welcomed! thanks!

      @BossTripp1 6 лет назад +2

      The Spectre Silver True it doesn’t have hard disables but if you can get it on the ground and enemies have to walk on it to get to you it can destroy an enemies shield and health with the damage tics.

    • @thecrow4129
      @thecrow4129 6 лет назад +1

      Still, the lack of hard disables makes it a bit difficult to kill some bosses. I do find Geomancer's hard disables to be gimmicky though, it does magical damage, but the disable is a physical armor one. Hydro and Aero have great disables, even though it requires the target to have a condition such as wet, chilled, or shocked. But can lack a little in the damage department, since neither have DOT. Fire is great if you can position properly though

    My 2 cents - unless you're playing the hardest dificulty mode and min-maxing, go for roleplay and the origin stories you consider more interesting.
    Me, I choose Lose over Sebille even if Sebille make the game's best ranger (elf racial + elemental ranger is crazy good). Didn't regret it, Lose has such a cool origin slotyline with her inner demon.

    When you start a new game head to the gate of the joy. Go to the right side of the stairs there should be a ladder. Use it, And you can completely avoid talking to the bishop when you start. Once your in joy. Level up to 5 without leaving the joy (*NOTE I never left joy it might still work if ya come back) . Now when you return they should still be talking. Take the ladder again and hopefully your ready. fortify your ranged units and attack the ghiest. Make sure you can keep them fortified because the bishop knows nether swap. Which is a teleport spell and with the effect fortified you cannot be teleported. Now at this point the magisters should either be taking the ladder or the long way to you. this will take 3 turns for them to attack your group (5 or 6 for the long way) But they should not be a problem cause of your high level the problem are the gheist with there high burst damage. Your goal is to kill the gheist. They know backlash so they will be teleporting to you. If you have the skill teleport deal with them one at a time by throwing one of them back to the bishop. The hammer for some reason cannot use ladders so she will not be scary unless you get close to her. By now you should have one ghiest attacking you and the other already used backlash. Focus your attacks on the first ghiest and make sure you have plenty of stuns. Since they are level 8 they have no problem killing you with 4 ap. Once you kill 1 you should INSTANTLY turn level 6 restoring all of your health. This should take 3 turns to kill him if not then then the other ghiest will appear. If you have a summoner leaver your totem behind your group and your summon should stay with your group so they can apply the flanking bonus to the ghiest. The magisters will chip at you but you MUST kill the ghiest first or you will lose. Once both are dead target either the bishop or the hammer. Once either one of them hits half health they will flee. And you will have achieved the achievement Hammered. she will also leave her weapon behind , Its gives + 2 in strength , Intelligence and necromancy. If you just want to cheese it follow the guide but in story difficulty. You will still reap the awards. And don't forget to stock up on potions.

I do not see the need for super high wits with the dual weilding dagger rouge because of the backstab...battle stomp and cloak and dagger abilities.
