Installing Seamless Gutter

  • We just made seamless gutter the entire length of the warehouse.
First the guys loaded a roll of black aluminum into the gutter machine, and just like magic gutter came out of the other end.
After they rolled out 3 to 4 feet, they installed an end cap that got crimped in place and then caulked.
Next they used an outlet punch to make a hole for the downspout.
Then they installed a rectangular outlet- this got a layer of caulk around the bottom.
Once they got it in place, they put another layer of caulk all over the top- this way there’s no leaks.
At this point, they just kept running out the gutter- We needed a piece 86 feet long.
Once it was the right length, they used the machine to cut it off.
Next they clipped in a gutter hanger every two foot on center.
These hangers use a screw rather than the old-fashioned nails.
These guys definitely have their system down, they installed an 86-foot piece with just two people.
They snapped lines on the fascia as a guide so the gutter would have a ¼” of fall over 8 feet, this way the water runs to the outlets.
Finally, they installed the downspouts- now we’re ready for rain.
I love the way this black gutter looks.
Let me know in the comments, what do you think is the longest piece of gutter these guys have made? @hausplans

6$ a running foot is about the going rate. So that 80 ft run of gutter and 2 20 ft downspouts is worth approx 720$ before tax. The machine pays for itself fairly quickly.

    • @tr1p279
      @tr1p279 10 дней назад +2

That’s a fairly cheap installation and will probably last between 15-25 years with some maintenance needed. If they had soldered zinc together, it could last around 80-100 years. I’m not saying they did a bad job, that’s probably just what the customer paid for. However, it’s certainly not the Ferrari of gutters

People don't really realize how important gutters are - until they have interior leaks. There is such a huge difference between 4" and 6" gutters. I replaced my 4" gutters with 6" gutters and my home sounds entirely different now when it rains and the rain runoff is actually controlled.

86 foot is about the max 2 guys can do nicely without getting kinks or rigging some bracing on the ends. We would use 3 on it just so the center guy can tack it high, then go double check our line up with ends.
In my area, hangers are 36 inches on center. 12" from ends. I have never seen it be an issue in 24 years. No snow or ice here, though. That's the difference. It would bow at 36" with snow or ice.
I've never seen a 1/4" per 8 foot pitch before either. Not on residential, it would stand out like a sore thumb on the level fascia and roof line. It drains via gravity, not flowing, so it just needs to be lower to completely drain. Just watched it in real time yesterday yesterday a job in the rain. After a couple minutes of rain, the gutter is half full and just draining, no "flow" going on really. As long as it has a downspout every 30 foot or so, it'll drain. It is a pitch that makes sense on a warehouse where there's not a picky homeowner.
It's also weird to see the hangers actually clipped on the back. That only works when it's a metal roof with no drip edge. Otherwise, the back of gutter is under the drip edge. You can't clip. You don't normally do that also because the back of the gutter is higher than the front, so that it overflows towards the front, instead of into the soffit. You'd have noticeably angled hangers that you'd see doing it like that.

Every two feet for the brackets is not enough if you live where it snows heavy and has ice. I owned a gutter machine in the past and have done tons of gutter jobs , we always put brackets every 16" on center.

You can run a piece of gutter hundreds of feet long the problem is expansion and contraction the aluminum will expand and contract faster than the house which will cause slices in the back of the gutter where the gutter hangers scew to house. Ive seen this on aluminum guttering 60ft and over. I hung a 100 ft run by myself. It was a earth burm house if u wondered how?

Worked for a gutter company one longest run i think we did was 160ft steel gutter 5in
Once yiunstart to get longer tham that you pretty much need to do 2 peice because of expansion and contraction in our climate. In warmer climates it might be easier to do longer ones with now joints.

end of roof is over half of the gutter - so in heavy rain it will just spill over
also, the edges where it was folded are cracked. I dont know the material, but as it is coted i think its not corrosion resistant. If this is true, no precautions on this will ensure it lasts not very long.
