    Here is an indebth look at the mysterious "Darken Mode" for perfect, quick and easy "Window Pulls"
    Remember, Darken Mode is simply a concept, when you over expose something in Darken Mode it will not show up when masking in a darker exposure, this being the window view. As mentioned I point my flash directly at the window and usually I only need 1/4 or half power from a speedlight as I am pointing it directly at the area I want to over expose.
    So hopefully this will help all of you that are still having a hard time with this technique..
    Be sure to check out our "Mastering Luxury Real Estate Photography Workshop Intensive" link. This 3 day intensive workshop is the perfect opportunity to learn first hand how to take your photography to the next level.

    Not sure if this is possible in anything outside of Gimp. And the window frame around it... This must be a flash shot, right, it won't work with the Ambient?
    The thing is that it requires that you balance the levels/curves of your layers so that the window frame in the flash-shot is about as bright as the shot where the outside light is blown out with brightness.

    Thanks Rich. I've found that when flashing the windows you want to use the absolute minimum power possible. This is to reduce any reflections or shadows out the window. Additionally, this may work best by avoiding ETTR for window pulls. So you can take the lower power flash, boost the exposure in post to bring the window up. But at the same time bringing up the exposure of the areas around the window. (replicating a more powerful flash.)

  • @Hackbarthja
    @Hackbarthja 7 лет назад +8

    Im curious as to why you flatten your images in photoshop. If something happens and you need to go back and change something, you can't. What I like to do is hit Command + Option + Shift + E (or create the action) and what that does is take all the layers beneath and give you a flattened image without sacrificing all that masking you worked hard on. Just a suggestion. Also thank you so much for teaching darken mode, i use to all the time now!

      I believe there are multiple schools of thought on this. I get why you do what you do but for me I like to just do something and commit to the edit once I'm happy. I have more photos and shoots to work on today and by tomorrow I probably won't ever have another thought about that image because I have another day full of photos and editing. Changing over to this line of thining at first was difficult but then I realized it was just about having confidence in the work was producing.

  • @edwaggonersr.7446

    Rich, I it occurred to me one evening while watching one of your videos that: One could imagine that in layers there are two light sources; one from the bottom up, the other from the top down. Ergo, the bottom layer is always illuminated because the light comes from the bottom; but the layer with a mask is not visible until parts of the mask (which is blocking the top light) is erased. Make sense?

    Rich do you have any tips for minimizing flash causing the windows themselves to bloom a bit when trying to do a Window pull? You seem to do it so effortlessly with having almost no flash reflection or bloom in the window but I'm having some difficulty shooting flash direct, from the side, and bouncing it off the ceiling. I've been shooting at 100-320iso around f8 adjusting my shutter speed for the proper exposure for what's outside and then I'll flash in 1/4, 1/2 or full power and I can't seem to avoid the windows getting glare, haze, or reflections. Any lower flash power isn't enough to really use darken mode. I'm using an sb800 too.

    • @johnteague8475
      @johnteague8475 7 лет назад

      I would like to know more details about the flash angles as well. I sometimes get so many flash reflections that I have to do a non-flash "repair" shot to make sure that I have an image with no flash reflections.

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  7 лет назад +1

      You need to experiment with power and angle of flash. Sometimes I need to do several flash pops to get what I need..

  • @johnrasmussen3752

    Rich, thanks heaps, think I have conquered this now. Yikes was it confusing at the start. Even extended the concept with the "lighten" blend mode to lighten a dark ceiling and get rid of a horrible green colour cast from a pool table top. I thought if darken could work then why not. No selection needed, just brushed the new ceiling in ... I feel god awful powerful right now :)
    Any tips for making stainless steel shine better?
    Cheers from Aussie.

  • @sunililyas6302
    @sunililyas6302 6 лет назад +1

    Rich, Your videos are really helpful. I just want to learn one thing about Window Pull. What Camera mode do you shoot Window Pull Aperture or Manual? And when you shoot for Window Pull, do you Overexpose the Windows or Wall.

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  6 лет назад

      Always shoot everything in Manual mode.. I only shoot exteriors in Aperture Mode.
      You expose for the view and flash everything you don't want to mask in (window frame, furniture, shutters ect) so that part is brighter.. so in darken mode anything slightly over exposed will not be masked in..
      If you need further help I offer private One on One coaching which can really help. If this interests you just send me an e mail rich@richbaum.com.

    Off topic a bit, but I would like to know approximately how long it takes you to shoot an average 3 bed 2 bath home? I have been using your process for quite a few homes and it is working great (thank you, thank you), but it is a very slow process taking the ambient, flash and window pulls. I also usually take a non-flash shot at the same exposure as the window pull so I can fill in reflections if needed. The number of shots per shot can really add up. I use the Sony Play Memories app.

    • @leeburkhardt4849

    Rich, on your Streaklight 360, do you use any kind of attachment or diffuser for doing window pulls? It seems to me that you would want to minimize the light spreading around the room so it doesn't create more reflections. In this video, I see you pointing a small flash, making it very directional. However, I'd like to avoid carrying a second flash in addition to my own Streaklight 360 so I want to know what you would suggest for making the Streaklight more directional.

    Hey Rich! Hello from Auburn CA!
    First, love your videos. Thank you so much.
    When I use darken mode it makes everything dark, not just the windows. I followed step by step and have my layers set up just like you did and I'm on the mask layer.
    Do you think it might be because my flash isn't bright enough? It's driving me crazy!
    Thanks.

      It's most likely because your not doing the technique right.. you don't need anything more than a speedlight.

      Yep, I messed around and realized I wasn't over-exposing enough. I pointed the flash directly at the window and it worked great! Thanks!

    I noticed you are working in .jpg, do you shoot in .jpg or raw?

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  6 лет назад

      Glen, for Real Estate and most other types of photography I shoot in RAW but sometimes for speeding up my videos I will edit JPEGS
      I always recommend shooting in RAW so you have a better chance of recovering blown highlights and shadows..

    Hey Rich! LOVE your videos..quick question..now and then When I edit my widow pulls, the result seems too dark or a little blueish. Is that due to not enough flash over exposing?

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  6 лет назад

      Hard to answer, but I suggest you just adjust your colors. I use Auto White Balance and I shoot in RAW so I have no issues adjusting colors.

      I was shooting consistently dark photos even when I had my speedlite at the max. It finally dawned on me that the batteries needed replacing... problem solved.

    Rich please just a quick question. If you have a large room like this or a room with lots of window pulls can you just use a Rove light or other large flash and bounce off the ceiling to overexpose multiple windows at the same time for your window pull???
    I'm trying to do multiple pulls at the same time in large rooms as a basic speed light does not have the power.
    Thank you for responding

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  6 лет назад

      It depends on the rooms and windows, sometimes one flash POP is enough but some big rooms with many windows I need to do multiple flash pops.. it just depends.

    How much are you charging to justify the time spent on these window pulls?

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  6 лет назад +1

      Let's just say it works for me.. remember, set your quality to what you want to do in the future.. to me it's not all about being quick, it's more about being the best..

    Im new to real estate photography. What budget flashes and trigger could you recommend to my sony a7?

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  7 лет назад

      Aleksi Ravelin I recommend Flashpoint lights
      They make an R2 speedlight. The eVolv 200 is also great and I personally love the Streaklight 360.
      If you do buy lights please use this link to Adorama as it really helps support these free videos.

      i get it Rich. that's the best path. but from viewer's perspective - i watch the vid and click like and it seems every time i mouse over that area to do that, i always see ONE dislike and it's pretty ridiculous. this is free content from someone who has obviously helped A LOT of people.
