This is one of my favorite James and Mikes Mondays so far. I LOVE watching people sit down and really get into a game for a while. Somehow, James and Mike have a certain innocence when they approach the games; that's what makes them so entertaining to watch, to me anyway.
Cinemassacre Mike I was going to send you guys some old PS1 games but you never replied when I asked if you already had them. I was hoping to hear from you about them. They were Pong, The Granstream Saga, and Legend of Dragoon.
This entire game was so terrifying to me as a child. The Wampas, IG-88, the flying to wide open spaces with the jetpack and, worst of all, the Dianoga swamp monsters in the sewers in level eight. But it was still fun as all hell. This was still the true Star Wars, not what we get now.
***** Rogue Squadron is a simpler game. You only fly in ships. If the controls and camera in Shadows of the Empire would be like in Zelda, this game would be one of the very best on the N64.
Not even just a definitive N64 game but an example of a definitive game period. It still holds up today even though it can be super frustrating. It has great gameplay, good variety. Rogue Squadron is the "better game" but that is because it focuses on flying. Shadows of the Empire is an adventure. Which to me is how games should be.
Am I the only 1 who noticed they never held the R button to strafe and fire in all 3 videos lol. It really helps throughout entire game, especially when fighting the at-st and boba fett's ship.
I always wonder about stuff like this when I watch James play 3D games; is it bad because of the camera and controls or just because he's no good at playing 3D games?
yeah its weird when gamers dont press the buttons. also strange that james just plants himself and spams every time something is happening. then is surprised standing still turns out to be a bad idea.
It's funny to see how Mike manipulates James. Mike clearly knows what to do but in order not to offend his friend or seem like he gives orders he always 'suggests', what to do as a question, thereby making it seem like James is the one making the discovery. Classic psychology.
I wouldn't really call it manipulation, at least not in a negative context. If someone watched every normal human conversation, you can see it everywhere. It's just part of how humans interact with each other
The first rule of Beggar Canyon is: you do _not_ play the city bit in third person. Also, on Hard and Jedi when you crash into the walls you explode on impact.
MagneticToast Wait so that's why I was wondering why the stage was that bright compared to when I played on this stage years ago. On a side note, I really don't remember this stage being that difficult at all, maybe their N64 controller's joystick is just badly used and makes everything harder
There's a setting in the menu where you can lock Dash's sight angle, so when you look up to shoot the Slave I in this video or even the AT-ST in the other video, he stays looking up without you having to hold the joystick. That makes it SO MUCH easier to follow them from behind and shoot up.
i remember getting this game as a kid its one of those games that are addicting enough to keep you playing no matter how many times you die until you beat it, thats part of what makes a game fun
I think the problem you have is that in the speedbike stage, you are supposed to KILL the other enemies, not just rush past them. So the town part is helpful because there's a lot of junk you can push them into. This was my favorite stage as a kid.
I played the game all the way through to the end and personally where it picked UP for me was the Speeder section. I enjoyed it thoroughly and the end space battle was STUPENDOUS. Honestly I don't remember having a single hard time with this game as a kid, maybe I'm just a natural at gaming in some categories, while garbage in others ( like RTS games )
The controls look so horrible and frustrating. When this game was released I saw the bad reviews everywhere and just bought Rogue Squadron later on for the awesome flying levels.
HooDoo Williams Yeah, it got great reviews actually. mugenjouproject is just saying it got bad reviews because he just doesn't like it. He's just being childish. lol
One of my favorite N64 games! I hope Dice looks at this game for inspiration when making the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront. Shadows of the Empire offered so much variety in one game, I truly felt like I was in the Star Wars universe.
I use to play this when I was a kid...when you made the comment "I hope this one isn't as long as the other levels" I lost it thinking "if you only knew this level!" love this game. Still break it out from time to time.
RedHairdo Well, as fun as can be had in the turbo tunnel. Battletoads has excellent controls, and beating up baddies in that game is really fun. Certainly plays a lot better than THIS game. I just wish Battletoads was a bit more balanced.
decayedmatter No, I watched your video. I even saw you get the Sam and Max token. (By the way, Max is the rabbit.)What I find baffling is that you're making such a mission out of this, that you had to make your own video about it.So you haven't played it in five years. Big deal. I can do that too. Remember, I said I played it recently. And you're ignoring MY point. There are lots of games that I'm really, really good at, but I can put myself in other people's perspective and understand why they have a hard time with games like this. It's not a good argument to say "Look, I can beat this, therefore it's not a bad game."Being good at the game yourself is not the sole criteria. That's just bullshit.
***** This is really all I was saying, which is that the game hasn't really aged well in terms of how it controls. For someone who just sits down and plays this game cold, like Mike and James are doing, this is pretty much what it's like to play this game. And I think there's merit in showing that.
decayedmatter I don't think they "hated" any part of it besides the swoop stage and maybe the train stage. But you could tell they had a good time fighting those bosses, and this is a 4 parter now already, so they must like the game.
To me it was the worse part of the game. I just kill all the bikers just so I don't have to worry about them anymore. Because that's what you have to do side ram into them.
"That last stage took forever, I'm hoping these other stages won't all take quite as long" As he is unknowingly playing the longest stage in the game. Still a great stage though.
I can legitimately feel their frustration. When James gets killed by the ship I even yelled out "NO!" Like this is intense. These are hands down my favorite James and Mike Mondays episodes
I think James and Mike are from a generation of gamers that really get into the "flow" state that has gotten a lot of notoriety recently. That's why they sweat so much when they play. For some reason, it's only happened to me a handful of times.
It's funny how much James and Mike are genuinely complaining. Shocking how much they blow at this game. What kid didn't manage to play this game at age 10? Yes, it is difficult at times, but that's what makes it so memorable.
I know it's pretty late to be giving advice on this playthrough, but the "racing" level is not a racing level. You are supposed to murder the Biker Gang. With the R button you can juke to the right and the Z button jukes left. You are expected to pull up beside each of the bikers and it's easiest to get the back of your bike locked on the front of their bike and force them into the wall. When they are next to the wall, press R or Z to smash them into the wall and they explode. Once they are all dead, you can then take as much time as you need on the level to collect the very hidden challenge points and extra lives. Fun fact, on Jedi difficutly, if you are even going moderately fast, hitting a wall is an instant death! One of my favorite levels :)
I played this game for hours on end when i was a kid. My parents only let me play on weekends. It's so funny watching them struggle with this game. The racing to save Luke was the only stage where i was actually really good at. It took me probably a year of just getting ass whooped by Boba before i beat him. Great videos guys! So much nostalgia!
You guys are getting me to want to take a new crack at this game, though it won't be as fun as the footage you've edited together here. It's really cool watching the two of you trade off, look up secrets, and generally help each other out. That was a big part of the experience back then, before Internet. Friends taking turns, alternating between playing and being the GPS/co-pilot/answer point/etc was great. I'm curious, though: What prompted the full playthrough of this game? Was it because you felt challenged and just HAD to beat it? Was it enjoyable to play, despite some of the rough parts? Was it a fan request? I'm certainly glad you're doing it, but would love to hear if there was a driving factor behind giving this game so much attention. Looking forward to next week!
great vide, i would love to see you guys play through full games more often even if theyre in parts. hey mike and james, have you guys ever played star wars dark forces? thats a good star wars game
It's not a race! You are suppose to slam into the other guys and crash their bikes. I thought these guys knew how to play video games. That is one of the easiest levels in the game.
Kerby Colon I wouldn't say they are really bad at gaming. James has played through some really hard NES games that I could never do. But they did seem very bad at this game.
James, if you do a play through again on this game. Just remember to get all the challenge points and save all your special weapons until you fight the bosses. Also, save ALL your disruptor ammo til you fight the Gladiator droid.
This may have been said, but DON'T keep your finger on the throttle during the swoop stages. Do it like a bad driver- off and on. the swoop coasts for a while- this helps you not crash into everything. The reason it sucks is because you're going everywhere full throttle. Oh, and you have to kill all the swoop riders. But what am I doing? You guys recorded this already and are just getting more and more comments as if this was a twitch stream…
Wooo thanks to you guys I went back and finally beat Boba Fett and the Slave ship which I never knew came after until this video. Just beat the swoop bike race and now I continue the journey I started when I was 10. Thanks for the inspiration :D
Hmm it's hard to compare cross genre, for shooting games Battlefront is the best and for more of the roleplaying / universe aspect KOTOR would be best. Both excel at what they are supposed to do.
The Battlefront duo was definitely really good. I always enjoyed the combat when I played it. Apparently, there are mods for it where you can set the max troops way high for even bigger battles in the PC version for 2.
I never thought anyone could like this game. I was so sure the nerd would review it... but it's so fun to see you guys coming to the same conclusion while you're playing it.
I use to have a very hard time trying to get pass stage V, when I was a kid. But I did find a way to get to the other side of that cliff with that hovering transporter. It was a great game back in the 90's.
I love watching these James & Mike mondays but this one is painful to watch. Did either of you play this game back in 1996??? I remember playing this during Xmas break and I don't remember the aiming and jet bike controls to be THAT bad. It takes some getting used to due to the semi-crap analog stick on the N64 controller but with some practice you should be able to aim & blow away any object on the screen without much trouble. Makes me think neither of you played this game ever, or for very long....
Its all coming back to me... this damn speeder race. I cant believe I actually got this far as a kid, going up against that slippery train level, fighting boba fett, and now this part. haha. With the AT-ST's I remember just going right between their legs and they just stop moving, and you blast away.
It's so painful to watch someone be so impossibly bad at this game.... :/ The camera angles are not that bad, the controls are not that bad. But Mike and James haven't learned a single thing since they started playing. They haven't learned how to get in enemies' blind spots, they haven't learned how to use and not waste the special weapons, they haven't learned that going max speed throughout the speeder level is a bad idea (despite that the rest of the game generally encourages going slow as well), they haven't learned that Challenge Points give you extra lives (even though the end-of-level screen outright tells you this, and I'd bet Nintendo Power does as well). If they would just grab a few Challenge Points then running out of lives wouldn't be a problem. If you haven't learned a single thing by the midway point of a game, you're going to have a bad time. Any decent gamer should be better at a game like this after spending hours playing it.
I used to love that racing level! Played it over and over. Also on Boba fett you can get stuck between the two blasters on the ship and he can't hit you. It takes about 30 seconds to beat him.
I remember playing the hell out of this game back in the hayday of the N64 X-D. I even remember the secret code at the end of fight with all the ships in space, you could play as an X-Wing. Was absolutely Juicy!!
Y'know, as a kid I remember loving the speeder bike stage. I also remember the fact that the part in the Mos Eisley was a massive clusterfuck though. It was really easy to get lost.
This was always one of my favorite games off 64. It hurts watching you all play this. Because it's like watching a blind person walk through a maze. I never really realize how much you did not know about the Star Wars Galaxies James.
One of my favorite games. Played it all the time. Can't remember but I think it's the L and R button you can use to ram the other racers off track and make them crash. If you can kill all of them before they get to Luke, then all you have to worry about is driving there.
I was laughing so much at 8:15 in - they think they've beaten the level by taking down Boba Fett, but I remembered you had to fight his ship afterwards. Their reaction is hilarious!
9:45 this is one thing I miss from good-old-days of gaming. Only modern game that achieves this kind of tension is Dark Souls series. It's frustrating but when you beat it it's fucking good feeling. 11:15 Also I love how you guys go trough whole experience afterwards. Couch gaming with a friend at it's finest.
There is a magic spot for the Boba Fett fight actually. When your fighting his ship, fly to the highest platform stand on the edge of it, and when Boba Fett's ship comes to shoot you he gets to close and you'll stand right between his two front guns where he can't hit you.
You can do that anywhere on this boss fight screen and it is the best strategy. What you want to do is not even move at the very beginning and blast away with your laser. You may lose 1 life on jedi, but you will win on all other levels without moving a muscle.
Nerve-racking but entertaining. About as much anxiety washes over me viewing these videos as when I'm playing a portion in a game I've been struggling with. For example, I just finished replaying "Max Payne 2", and I had many intense moments, especially during the final chapter.
This is weird kind of nostalgia cause I must have been 6 or 7 when I rented this game. As soon as I started watching these I had a vague memory of the level in the start of this video. Watching this is almost like remembering a hazy dream lol.
Watching this instead of my animation projects, and let me tell you... I am moving/straining along with you guys. SO STRESSFUL!! Definitely going to replay this game over the next few days. XD
All the people here are like, game sucks, game rulez, players suck etc..... the game is OK and they are not the best players but that's exactly what makes these fun to watch.
I'm so glad that you guys are doing this game. I had a very strong love hate for it when I was younger. They should do a remake of this for the wii u.. that'd be kick ass.... remake like windwaker... updated graphics and improvements... not like the goldeneye remake where they changed the game completely.
I really want to see an AVGN episode where Mike plays as the Nerd and James plays as whatever special guest / interloper is due that week. I think that would be amazing.
This is one of my favorite James and Mikes Mondays so far. I LOVE watching people sit down and really get into a game for a while. Somehow, James and Mike have a certain innocence when they approach the games; that's what makes them so entertaining to watch, to me anyway.
Glad you enjoyed this episode of James & Mike Mondays. Thanks!

Cinemassacre
Mike huge fan, speaking of huge, how are you doing buddy? :)
HydraLinsK speaking of huge, its Perfect
Cinemassacre Mike I was going to send you guys some old PS1 games but you never replied when I asked if you already had them. I was hoping to hear from you about them. They were Pong, The Granstream Saga, and Legend of Dragoon.
speaking of huge, i had a footlong today and it reminded me of Mike

yes it's perfect
The definitive Nintendo 64 game. It had a novel and a soundtrack to go with it. And yes, this Was the movie we wanted instead of Phantom Menace.

Shadows of the Empire was way better than Rogue Squadron. Ocarina of Time is better than SOTE though.
Pod Racer N64...
Tetra Digm Atleast the rogue squadron games aren't very long. This game however seems to just drag on and on and on
Am I the only 1 who noticed they never held the R button to strafe and fire in all 3 videos lol. It really helps throughout entire game, especially when fighting the at-st and boba fett's ship.
They are going to NEED to strafe when they get to the sewer level.

yeah its weird when gamers dont press the buttons. also strange that james just plants himself and spams every time something is happening. then is surprised standing still turns out to be a bad idea.
I know right? They're tripping so hard on "We have to fly around AND shoot things at the same time?!"
***** I'm pretty it's mostly that he is bad at 3D games.
lol I love how immersed James gets, you can really see he's panicking, his face is all red and everything!
Like a child lol
That's what I was gonna say! It perfectly encapsulates what games were meant to be.
Challenging and fun.
LMAO!!! OMG you guys stressed me the F*CK out when you were fighting Boba Fett.. lol.
Funny seeing you here :)
Well, then leave if you don't like watching them. Or do you like getting frustrated and bitch about them?
It's funny to see how Mike manipulates James. Mike clearly knows what to do but in order not to offend his friend or seem like he gives orders he always 'suggests', what to do as a question, thereby making it seem like James is the one making the discovery. Classic psychology.
That's so funny but so true
I wouldn't really call it manipulation, at least not in a negative context. If someone watched every normal human conversation, you can see it everywhere. It's just part of how humans interact with each other
that's it
Lol
that’s why they don’t do these anymore
The first rule of Beggar Canyon is: you do _not_ play the city bit in third person. Also, on Hard and Jedi when you crash into the walls you explode on impact.
Not to mention on Jedi the stage becomes night time
MagneticToast oh man, it's true, and the bikers become crazy
MagneticToast
Wait so that's why I was wondering why the stage was that bright compared to when I played on this stage years ago. On a side note, I really don't remember this stage being that difficult at all, maybe their N64 controller's joystick is just badly used and makes everything harder
Neitsuke Yeah, it's not hard at all. James is... well... not the most skilled gamer who ever lived :P
I was confused as to why he wasn't exploding while they were hitting walls non-stop.
"You might meet Boba Fett in this stage." "Fuck him!" LOL
Good middle of the night, stuck at work cure for boredom... Thanks Mike & James!
There's a setting in the menu where you can lock Dash's sight angle, so when you look up to shoot the Slave I in this video or even the AT-ST in the other video, he stays looking up without you having to hold the joystick. That makes it SO MUCH easier to follow them from behind and shoot up.

How is anyone supposed to do better? Every single time you move the camera there's a second of delay before it moves.
@@BilltheFifth Do you think I'm serious?

I think the point is that they're doing it as we would when we were younger and couldn't simply google this crap or watch a Let's Play on RUclips.
I get that, but it clearly says what you have to do, so there shouldn't be any confusion. I got what to do when I was a kid and I suck at video games.

Mike got a job at Subway because he's an expert at handling footlongs.

James's eyes during the Boba fight. Priceless.

ikr, they are really bad at gaming and they seem to always miss the obvious things...
Kerby Colon
I wouldn't say they are really bad at gaming. James has played through some really hard NES games that I could never do. But they did seem very bad at this game.
F2FRONT500
I could never beat that game on Jedi.
It's not obvious that that's the objective, though
That seems SO intense!
Always watch these guys when stoned just like I am now can hear my voice in my head really loud
1:15 "Oh god you mother bitch." xD
I love the racing stage... it's so much fun once you get the controls down.
Yeah they're problem is that they're going full speed through the whole race, you have to kind of "drift" along the corners by slowing down.
James, if you do a play through again on this game. Just remember to get all the challenge points and save all your special weapons until you fight the bosses. Also, save ALL your disruptor ammo til you fight the Gladiator droid.

Battlefront and Battlefront 2 are probably the best Star Wars games.
lol....'probably'
They're good but I think Knights of The Old Republic was the best Stars Wars game.
No star wars game beats KotOR I & II
I never thought anyone could like this game. I was so sure the nerd would review it... but it's so fun to see you guys coming to the same conclusion while you're playing it.
Also: if you fall from the platform at Bobba Fett boss fight using the jetpack, you can fall on a safe area full of health packs and ammo
I think it might just be a full health, maybe you're right, but I do know theres a full health off one of the corners
Makes me think neither of you played this game ever, or for very long....
shaeet play it again and rethink.....
Controller might have a wonky joystick, that happens a lot
Its all coming back to me... this damn speeder race. I cant believe I actually got this far as a kid, going up against that slippery train level, fighting boba fett, and now this part. haha. With the AT-ST's I remember just going right between their legs and they just stop moving, and you blast away.
I know right! :D
Don't the seekers have a camera on them you can switch to after firing them?
Yes they do, good memory on you, damn!
Only if you have seeker camera turned on in the options.
When Mike started saying "This is bullshit!" at around 12:23, I honestly half expected James to go "You know what's buuuullllllllshit?!!!"
It's so painful to watch someone be so impossibly bad at this game.... :/
The camera angles are not that bad, the controls are not that bad.
Dude this is not a lets play wtf do You neck beards not get about this??!!!? Lolz I mean cmonnnnn JESUSSSS
Lol they suck ASS at this game. I beat it as a kid and I'm not great at a lot of games.
Triggered
Does it matter here? They're having a blast!
PART 4!? Thanks for still doing James & Mike Mondays!
*81 out of 100 health*
"OMG I NEED HEALTH."
I know you're just enjoying this game, but holy crap this was just sloppy gameplay.
I used to love that racing level! Played it over and over. Also on Boba fett you can get stuck between the two blasters on the ship and he can't hit you. It takes about 30 seconds to beat him.
you guys aren't very good at this...
I remember playing the hell out of this game back in the hayday of the N64 X-D. I even remember the secret code at the end of fight with all the ships in space, you could play as an X-Wing. Was absolutely Juicy!!
I was laughing so hard at the racing part.
"Did you see that plane just take off?"
"Yeah I wish I was in the plane."
XD
I remember playing this game ALL the time back in the day.
"I hope the other stages don't take as long" Mike says as he begins the LONGEST EFFIN' STAGE IN THE GAME!
It's good to see them having fun with a game that I used to play as a kid.
Can NOT wait for the next episode. Some of the best content that has been released here lately!
That swoop bike stage was a pain in the ass! I don't remember how many times I got lost in the town..
One of my favorite games. Played it all the time. Can't remember but I think it's the L and R button you can use to ram the other racers off track and make them crash. If you can kill all of them before they get to Luke, then all you have to worry about is driving there.
This is one game I would totally love seeing a full HD remake. :D
I was laughing so much at 8:15 in - they think they've beaten the level by taking down Boba Fett, but I remembered you had to fight his ship afterwards. Their reaction is hilarious!
so glad you guys decided to play through this one brings me back to me and my bud trying to get through it such a great game!!
There are so many secrets in that canyon level with Boba Fett.
I couldn't beat boba fett when i played this as a kid. It was awesome watching you guys beat him. Cant wait for part 4
If i remember correctly, you can strafe with R button? Makes the shooting a whole lot easier.
Thank you for sharing this moments with us.
Lol, great vid. I would love to see their facial expressions on hard mode. Hard mode for me was an exercise in in DEEP frustration.
Guys, you can get the foam domes off earphones and pop them over the control stick for extra grip ;)
Ah, good old days of lowpoly madness! You can really feel the frustration of the racing stage.
I had the toy version of that speeder bike as a kid! It was from the Shadows of the Empire toy line at the time!
Loved this game growing up. Miss those days.
I think this series is my favorite so far, so good on a saturday morning
That Boba Fett fight was more tense than the night vision scene from Silence of the Lambs.
Love this videos, thanks James & Mike, keep it until the end of the game. A truly fan from Spain, please receive my best wishes.
