One of the best scenes in the whole show. It's difficult to put into words the ammount of thematic parallels, call backs, and foreshadowing Isayama packs into a single scene between just two people talking in a basement and a person doing what its basically an info dump above. A masterclass.
I wonder if Isayama was inspired by Hitchcock's famous analogy of the "Bomb under the table" for writing scary and dramatic scenes that revolve around conversations. For those who don't know: Hitchcock described his effective method of creating suspense with an analogy that goes as follows: Picture two people (characters in a fictional story) talking to one another at a table. They have a whole conversation, and after 5 minutes pass, the table suddenly erupts in an explosion, killing both characters. This is certainly a "plottwist" or something along those lines, and effective at shocking the audience, but it lasts very shortly as far as emotions go. The audience might also believe themselves to have been robbed of something, or to have wasted their time listening to the conversation. Now, instead, picture the same conversation, however, after 1 minute passes, the camera moves down under the table, and shows a bomb with a ticking timer. Then the camera pans up to the characters again. The audience now KNOWS something really bad is going to happen soon, or is implied to happen. Will the bomb be defused, will the characters finish their conversation in time? All of a sudden, the specific details of the conversation both start to stop mattering in comparison with the weight of the bomb's narrative importance AND start to matter immensely, as these details might be what cease the conversation and defuse the bomb. Maybe the characters will fail to stop the bomb BECAUSE of the details. And then the bomb explodes. Hitchcock didn't quite explain it as extensively as I did here, but that's the basic gist of it. The REVEAL of the bomb under the table, and the sudden suspense this creates, is what drives the audience's attention. It's what makes that scene entertaining, if dark. Now look at AoT's scene. We have a building full of people. We have TWO titan shifters sitting in said building. We have the pov character of Falco who has been with us for several episodes now and who we have come to like because of his genuine likeable personality. (We don't want him to get hurt at all). We even have a bunch of CHAIRS to the side, almost explicitly referencing the bomb under the table analogy. Both characters have a conversation. From Falco's point of view initially, nothing is wrong, nothing is expected. But Eren reveals the bomb under the table. HE is the bomb. And for that matter, so is Reiner. The music swells. We, the audience, KNOW shit is about to go down. Things start moving rapidly. Willy's speech increases the tension further. Then, a glimmer of hope. Willy reveals the lie. Willy reveals his sense of guilt. Eren doesn't antagonize. Reiner begs for forgiveness. Eren (sort of) forgives him, says 'we're the same' and 'you never had a choice'. And then that final, gutwrenching, ultimate climax: "I just keep moving forward." The bomb explodes. Eren literally explodes a building. ABSOLUTE CINEMA. If Miyazaki was NOT directly inspired by this analogy, it would surprise me, for how close it is to the original comparitively. But if so, that just speaks to his own genius in this regard. He knows a scene is only good if it has an effect on the audience, in the short or in the long run. Tl;DR: Science proves this scene is peak.
You must have watched the same RUclips analysis video that I did equating Hitchcock's "Bomb under the table" to this AOT episode (?) Since I watch every AOT video I ever find on YT, I don't remember the name of the video or the YT channel/author. But I distinctly remember a video going literally line-by-line over Eren's/Reiner's conversation, interspersed with black-and-white footage of Hitchcock explaining the concept (which btw is basically just another word for "Chekhov's Gun." 😉)
AOT allows for so many different valid readings into scenes like these ones. Like I didn't read the Eren and Reiner scenes as Eren necessarily forgiving Reiner, but more so pushing Reiner to tell Eren the main reason why he broke the walls. Not because Reiner didn't know it was a bad thing and not because of Marleys brainwashing (tho still a reason, i just dont think its the main one) but because Reiner wanted to do it. Same with Eren and the rumbling. There is a million reasons for why Eren did the rumbling some for valid than others, but again the main reason (imo) is because Eren wanted to do it. Thats why Eren says to Reiner that they are the same, they both did horrible acts because they wanted to.
its not should be your opinion only because we literally have eren admitting it to ramzi..... thats why after reiner admitted his to eren eren says 'LIKE I THOUGHT i am the same as you'
I have been following this series for over a year now and so i want to thank you for making it. Also this might have been the best episode of overanalyzing attack on titan so far
My absolute favorite episode. The tension of the final interrogation is such an incredible minute that I go back to again and again and again.... Now you've shown me so many more layers to it that I'd missed - including finally explaining why they'd even add Willie's "because I was born" line
i love you video's so much i fell like i notice most of this but have no one to tell and a lack of abilitty to put it in words properly so your vidios really help me in that sense
I remember first seeing AOT and watching this scene of Eren attacking Marley, thinking "How is this ANY better than what Marley did to Paradis?! Really hard to understand how they think this is the right thing to do." I now understand that was the whole point of the show 😅
Has anyone else noticed the meaning of the music the orchestra plays during Willie's speech along with the overall music for this season? While Hiroyuki Sawano was the primary composer for seasons 1-3, his understudy Kohta Yamamoto took over for the bulk of the season 4 OST (with Sawano still on for supplemental work.) Yamamoto’s music is composed for the scenes in and concerning citizens of Marley. Now here's the genius part: the band that is accompanying Willy’s play describing Titan attacks starts playing compositions by Hiroyuki Sawano (for the first time this entire season!) And of course they are reprising tracks previously used during Titan attacks…while the play is re-inacting the same kinds of attacks! So not only did they change point-of-views and animation studios for this season, but they even changed the OST composers!😂 (We are so used to hearing that music in the background that I didn’t even necessarily notice that the music was in-universe in the play itself! But I certainly recognized and welcomed the music itself…) From here on out as both sides are explored at the same time, both composers also more closely work together…I just love all of the meta layers of meaning! …
43:18 I think u missed the part where Willy says he doesn’t want to die because he was born in this world Eren was a little shook. And I interpreted as him reflecting himself a little bit to Willy since he said the same words and having some hope that the war might stop but Willy then announces the declaration of war and we see Eren get disappointed. Probably because it was reaffirming him once again that everything he saw was going to happen
Not only do I never tire of the Isayama "Today we shall learn how to deliver maximum emotional damage" meme, but it only becomes more apt (and hilarious! 😂) as we get this deep into the series and we see it perfectly describe his intent for the 200th time. By slowly and insidiously revealing the depth of his evil genius, he really could teach the masterclass in “delivering maximum emotional damage…” 😈
I still remember the first time I watched this episode. I knew exactly what Eren was going to do, but as the conversation between him and Reiner continued, I just kept thinking, almost pleading, "Don't do it, Eren." Despite the logical storyline conclusion, I really wanted him to make a different choice. Looking back, it's crazy to think that his choice had already been made, by the past and the future.
Eren questions Reiner: "why was my mom eaten?" while knowing that it was Eren himself who made it happen. If he just wanted to know, without hate to Reiner, why he did whatever he did. Why would he question about his mother? To make Reiner feel bad? But we alrd established that Eren wasn't trying to blame Reiner.
As much as I would love a series about the great titan war I would also love a series about the war we saw in the end credits. How long the world had “peace” how, who and why the conflict was started. Also that end credits war was say 200 years after Eren’s rumbling do the people still believe titans were real. I’d love to see our main cast’s descendent’s and how the world remembers the events of AOT.
Thank you so much for this analysis especially the last 2 minutes !! I absolutely hate when people say that eren didnt did the rumbling because of armins book (a major reason) when eren literally admits that he is same as reiner Ending haters like this episode BUT simply dont understand it
While there are definitely multiple other individual scenes and moments in the show I like better, I still think overall start to finish this is the best episode of the entire series.
It may sound somewhat narcissistic, but as I watched this video with such excitement, it dawned upon me that there are people who watch my videos with the same excitement, and that is a weird realization to acknowledge, and harder to actually accept...
I have to add, I do believe these are strong references to the German regime in the 1930s and 40s and their crimes against humanity. The ghetto looks just too much like the actual ghettos, I mean cleaner I guess but the architecture, the armbands, the clothing, inviting the „world“ into the place to show one isn’t treating people too bad, as well as the attempt to make allies, because they figure it’s going to be next to impossible to win an all out war. Also the whole show using so many German looking and sounding things. There is so much reference to Germany. The first time I watched that first Marley episode I was like wow that’s just 1940 Germany. I believe the whole starting point for the point of the story is to show, that this is not a surreal level of hatred. People did try to wipe out millions because of made up differences and myths. And yes now one could argue, this could be antisemitic propaganda because in the real world there was never a threat. Which is my only criticism for the manga/anime. If you use this imagery, you know where you took it from. And for the sake of entertainment or maybe making your philosophical point, you build a counterforce connected to an event where people were just defenseless victims. And if he wanted to stay totally clear of that discussion, why use the imagery that is used? Why not go for at least a different looking place or people? Please what are your thoughts on this? My perspective is deeply biased by me being German… most of us tend to take „never again“ very seriously.

We got to get this video on trending. This is an essential breakdown on why choosing a side leads to more pain and suffering in the long run.
Ive been waiting my whole life for this!

15:55 the timing of this in the video makes me question if this mistake was genuine or just irony, comparing it to Willy's
Thank you so much for making this awesome series.
Sending you love and support from Saudi Arabia!

I'm so curious of next episode of overanalyzing AoT, the battle between Eren and Warhammer Titan is insane
I think the dub scream is better in this scene because it almost explodes out from under the shouted "war" with a similar starting pitch.
Looking back I’m not sure how I didn’t know this guy wasn’t Eren. But damn it was such a great “sunrise” when he was revealed

Lots of thanks for this amazing series, it's simply the best!!! 😁
Thank you! Ive been waiting for what felt like YEARS for the next installment. I love this videos. You are phenomenal
Thank u for making my day korotos mystery shack 🥰🥳
I remember Twitter being scared because "Declaration of War" was trending when the episode aired 😂
As much as I would love a series about the great titan war I would also love a series about the war we saw in the end credits. Thank you so much for this analysis especially the last 2 minutes !!
I absolutely hate when people say that eren didnt did the rumbling because of armins book (a major reason) when eren literally admits that he is same as reiner

Perfect timing I just finished the other video
