The thing is, she was horrible at the beginning of each season (3 & 4), but as each season progressed towards their end, she did get much better and more tolerable. See if you can find a clip of her as Neo Queen Serenity in the last episode of Season 4. That was good.

Talking about how "Molly" provided a lot of the charm that comes with the Dic dub, I will say that actress did her absolute best work during the Nephrite death scene. It's been some twenty years later and that scream she makes still gives me shivers to think about. It blows the original Japanese version of that scene out of the water.

The thing with the original dub that I find stands out more, is that you can at least tell everyone apart. Whether you find their voices awesome or annoying, they are all unique voices and had you closed your eyes and listen to them, you can tell who's who. It takes awhile to do that with the VIZ dub.

The ONLY Problem The DiC Dub Had Was Censorship

    • @AnotherOpinion695
      @AnotherOpinion695 3 года назад +29

Really because I feel as if it was the other way around. Everyone with the exception of Usagi/Serena sounds like gender fluid tweens. The girls in Viz all have voices that match their look. I feel like there is a huge bias for people who try really hard to claim the DiC version is the best.

    • @i_think_my_dad_is_still_in8184
      @i_think_my_dad_is_still_in8184 3 года назад +29

@@AnotherOpinion695 almost every line of the Viz dub sounded forced. For example, the “VENUS STAR POWER MAKE UP!” Part. The viz sounded like any other dub in 2020. Meanwhile, Dic felt a lot more powerful. Though the voices weren’t as fitting as their age, they still did a fantastic job. Not to mention, the dic dub music too. It was more fitting. In the Japanese dub, literally someone would say “YOU KILLED MY FRIENDS!! I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU!!” with soothing violin and piano music with backup vocals saying “sera mun..”. The DIC dub would basically be powerful music that tells you that a fight will take action. The dic dub would literally get hate just for the censorship..

Personally, I can't tell Raye and Mina apart from the from the old dub, and it doesn't help that the same actress voiced both at different points. Also, some voices are very grating and barely tolerable to me. Maybe it's because I'm familiar with a lot of dub VA's so I can tell the characters apart.

I am not seeing any Robbie Daymond praise in these comments and that is a CRIME! I will admit that he took a bit of time to grow on me but now he’s easily my favourite. So many actors try to make Mamoru a cool guy. But I love that Robbie fully encapsulates the “I’m a huge dork who really loves my girlfriend.” I also want to appreciate how much softer he made Mamoru in season one. Mamoru really is kind of a jerk in season one but something about robbie’s portrayal makes him less one dimensional and a lot more interesting.

I really liked the voice of Terri Hawkes as Serina in the original DIC dub because I thought she added a lot of emotion and power to Usagi. I remember crying so much at the scenes with her and Darien (Mamoru) when they broke up in the show. She really had an ability to make me believe and feel what the character was feeling. While I really like the VIZ dub because it is more accurate to the original Japanese I will always be nostalgic for the original English dub. For some reason those scenes didn't have the same emotional impact on me when I watched them again in the VIZ dub. However, I think the music score is a big thing in driving emotion into a scene and I would argue that DIC had an amazing sound track; I wish it would be released as a remaster. I would love to see you talk about the DIC music and maybe compare it to the original sound track.

I think a lot people's issue with the viz dub is that it's pretty much the standard as far as dubs go if that makes sense. I think people were just expecting a lot more out of it. If I’m honest, I think a lot of the hatred towards the old dub is just biased and unfounded. DiC and Cloverway had to dub a very controversial anime for a North American audience that would have to pass the FCC to air on television. And DiC worked their butts off on Sailor Moon and don’t get enough credit for that. The songs and background music DiC created for their dub forever live in my heart as the best of Sailor Moon and the voice actors were absolutely amazing in the DiC dub for Terri Hawkes will forever be Sailor Moon. I remember watching an interview where she said she took actually food and ate it to record some of her lines when Usagi/Serena was eating and I find that to be true dedication to the character that she did that and she was absolutely the best. As for the rest, the DiC cast was Sailor Moon and her friends, even Jill. People can hate on British Luna but I loved her and I bought it and honestly, I find Jill’s Luna to be a better mentor for Usagi/Serena then a cat her own age (as I’m pretty sure if I remember correctly Luna is technically in “teenage years” as a cat if there is such a thing) and for her to nag Usagi when she’s not much older I just don’t buy as I do Jill’s Luna. But that’s me. I will forever be a fan of the DiC dub as it was my childhood and I praise them for all the work they did to make it suitable to pass the FCC so it could air.

Yes, SuperS is r*pey and weird... but since I watched it all the way through for the first time as an adult, that honestly came off as *the whole point* to me. The villains are predators who use numerous tactics to lure in r*pe victims, such that the episodes all serve as warning stories on how to spot (so as to avoid) real-life predators. Maybe the way it was portrayed was bit heavy-handed and uncomfortable to watch... but doesn't that just make it a more effective message for children?

I feel like Viz did an amazing job with the voice cast and script whilst also keeping the iconic soundtrack from the original Japanese dub. One thing that I really appreciate from Viz is the addition of some minor script changes (wherever it came off redundant to repeat what was said) such as when Usagi and Rei first meet Eudial. In the Japanese dub usagi says " Witches 5? " and Rei says " Eudial? " However, in the Viz version Rei says " Never heard of them " with an inflection that works really well at giving more depth to her character and makes me wonder just what else they've changed. I still appreciate the dic/cwi dubs too and completely agree that we all should love whichever dub and respect other people's opinions. 😊

One of the reasons the Cloverway dub sounds so bad is because the voice director (who was the line producer during the DiC days) apparently hated doing multiple takes because time=money. The voice of Melvin who voice directed most of the DiC dub said she physically squirmed when Tracey Moore (first Serena and the voice director for like the first 10 episodes) kept wanting the voice actors to do multiple takes to get it right

I'll say on the Linda Ballantyne front, I think she was dealt a really bad hand. She had to do a Terri Hawkes impression on top of acting, and it sounds like she's really straining her voice early on in S to do both. Even as a kid I noticed that. But eventually I think she got a handle on it, and she does a great job by the finale of S. Does she sound like a teenager when that happens? No. But she does get to a point where she sounds natural and loses the strain, which I really enjoyed once it happened. She got to focus on the acting, so the funny scenes were funny and the dramatic scenes were dramatic, as long as you don't think about whether she sounds 15 or not. And since most kid characters in cartoons don't actually sound like kids to me, I was able to enjoy her when she got to that point. But I will always have a special nostalgia for the way Terri Hawkes did hero speeches above Linda, maybe because Terri got to voice Sailor Moon in the 3 movies and the stakes were higher there than a typical episode. And side note, you rightfully mentioned how amazing the song "Carry On" was. You should check out Cristina Vee's (no H, btw) RUclips channel, she just did a cover of that song and it's absolutely wonderful!

I feel like one thing the old dub doesn’t get enough credit for is the casting for the villains. IMO, they almost always sound unique and properly cast (for the most part) and are some of my favorite.
Cloverway dub may not have not gone for accuracy all the time when choosing voice actors but their picks for villains in S and SuperS were memorable to me. An example for me would be Mistress 9. She definitely had more raspy and witch-like voice in the dub, not at all like her Japanese counterpart, but her voice always kind of haunted me as a kid. Maybe it’s my bias, but Christine Cabanos performance really fell flat for me...

I would say Dic has the best dub. First reason is how they made the music their original and these scores unexpectedly fit so well and memorable. Some of them r better than the Japanese original anime (like the inner senshi transformation theme). So that dub alone has its own originality and individuality as a plus
As an international fan who watched SM when i was just a kid, DiC Dub improved my English vastly and i learned a lot from DiC Dub. Idk if it is intentional, but still kudos to that. There are something about their pronunciation and expression of language that felt natural (not all the time tho). And i like how they speak very slowly without being awkward. I had almost no trouble catching up with their conversation pace.

She had the right kind of softness when she needed to, and her comedic moments were great, though I will always love Terri as Usagi for nostalgic reasons. Your opinions were definitely more reasonable, especially with the Viz dub, but I personally enjoyed the Viz dub of Sailor Moon over the original.
I feel like Stephanie Sheh does a really good job at portraying Usagi as a big crybaby teenager who cares about her friends and those she loves, because that's who Usagi always has been for most of the times we've seen her in the show.
Robbie Daymond, oh yeah, it's all coming together with him as Mamoru. -insert Kronk meme here-
I agree with you on Christina Vee and Michelle Ruff for their portrayals as Rei and Luna, even now when I know there are two distinctly different voice actresses voicing both characters, I still can't help but think they sound so much alike. They both do a great job in their roles, I feel like Christina gives Rei a very regal yet haughty vibe to her, which works well considering Rei's personality overall.
Whereas I love Michelle as Luna, granted I love Michelle as a voice actress in general since she's voiced some of my favorite characters but still. She really sells to me that Luna, despite how put together she seems with her mission, is still trying to figure her own shit out too, which I appreciate. But again, her and Christina sound freaking similar that it's hard to tell them apart at times.
Cherami Leigh, also another voice actress whose work I've enjoyed but she really does a good job as Venus. Venus has always kind of given me that silly but well meaning big sister vibe and I feel like she captured that feeling really well. 10/10.
Oh gosh, I've already forgotten who any of Ami's voice actresses are. But her Viz dub does a good job at portraying her as a quiet and shy girl, possibly a bit too well because I can't even remember her voice actresses name so oops.
Last of the Outer Senshi Amanda Miller as Sailor Jupiter, by far my favorite Sailor Scout as a character and honestly I feel like the best voice for her. She walks this fine line of being the super macho tough girl but also is able to show just how actually feminine and sweet Mako is really well. And I already know of her because she portrayed your super stereotypical tough girl in Fire Emblem: Awakening, Sully, as well as someone quite regal and refined in that game, Cherche. So I think that she found the balance for Mako really well and has done a better job than the other portrayals of her throughout the various dubs over the years.
I'm going to cut this comment short and just say that Johnny Yong Bosch is best Artemis and Sandy Fox does a great job of portraying Rini and making me hate the character even more. So, yeah.

My favorite Serena was Tracey Moore. I think hers was the sweetest, most melodic sounding of the bunch and she nailed sounding young without sounding like a toddler. Several of her lines in those first couple of episodes are ones I think of on a regular basis. Terri Hawkes is the one I remember most however because her episodes were the ones I caught the most - I had four siblings to fight with for tv time so getting to catch an episode of Sailor Moon before DVR and streaming was a challenge. I would definitely put her second. She's very pleasant sounding - she just doesn't pass for a young teenager. Linda and Stephanie tie for last. I don't like either to be honest - though I do like other work they've done. Linda sounded too rough, a mix of too nasally and raspy. To me, she sounds like a chain smoking 50 year old. And I don't like Stephanie's very, very young inflection. She sounds like a very young child - you could easily switch her to Chibiusa and it would work perfectly. And she does this squeaky, high-pitched yelling that hurts my ears a bit.
I love Karen B as Ami. I enjoyed her take - she has this academic, rich girl voice that I think fits her background and upbringing. And her transformation and power vocals had this powerful flair I always loved. I think with Ami, she was always trying to be older than she actually was, like that was part of her character, and I heard that in her voice. Liza, not memorable. Listening to that little clip.. too high. Kate for me is the same as many of the other Viz actors... she sounds too old - a grown woman instead of a girl in her early teens.
Kate Griffin is my preferred Rae. She sounded so good alongside Tracey's Serena. To me, she sounds like a teenager. Emilie is fine. I don't really like or dislike her portrayal. Middle road for me. Christina Vee again suffers from that too old sound. I never got over that in Crystal. The entire time, I thought she sounded like a grown woman.. a woman in her prime, even. Late 30s early 40s at her peak. There's a strength and maturity in the inflection and tone. She's got a great voice, but the entire time I'm thinking in my head "this is not a teenager" and it takes me out.
I think I'm probably the only one who strongly prefers the old Luna. I KNOW! No one seems to like her but other than a few episodes and a couple of the movies, I think Jill did fantastically. I like the older sounding Luna and Artemis. I think the two actors sound great together - that older posh Luna and older surfer-dude Artemis are a great balance and juxtaposition of one another that I appreciate. I buy them and their backstory and their history - which is also why I like that they sound a little older - because they remember their original selves more than the Sailors do, so they remember being attendants to the queen, In my mind, that ages them up. Michelle is fine. I think like Jill and Ron sounded amazing together and fit, Michelle and Johnny also match up perfectly, imo. And no complaints on Johnny Yong Bosch - I could never.
Susan Roman as Lita is great. I think she did really well at sounding like a strong, kinda tom-boyish, but still girly teen. Amanda Miller, another one that sounds too old for the character.
Stephanie M as Mina is another top fav. Great voice, very pleasant, and sounds like a teen. Emilie, again, was fine. No complaints, but not the Mina I prefer. Cherami I think is great! Stephanie beats her out as my fav Mina, but she still does a stellar job - but then, I love everything she does, she's one of my favorite voice actresses. I think she nails sounding young without sounding too young. Shes very even toned, there's no moments that I want to plug my ears (like with Stephanie's Usagi) and its a strong performance. But she is a strong performer, so. And I think she's got a bit of that Valley-Girl sound as well.
Tracey H as Rini was not great. Kinda forgettable for me. Stephanie Beard is *chefs kiss* Primo. Love her, love everything she does. And without her, The Real Sugar Baby" wouldn't exist - which would be a crime against humanity: ruclips.net/video/QNaiscbIaoI/видео.html
It shocks me that people dislike her! Sandy F, agree, she's doing a great job. I think shes was probably influenced by Stephanie B's performance, but she doesn't try too hard to imitate it - she does her own thing, which I appreciate.
I actually do remember Rino Romano as Darien, probably because I've rewatched the first episode so, so many times. Toby Proctor is definitely the Darien I fell in love with as a kid. I thought he had such a romantic inflection in his voice that I appreciated even as a child. Vince Corazza is def the one I remember most though, again, because I was able to catch more of his episodes. But also just because I was most familiar with his voice given the sheer volume of voice acting and live action work he's done. He was pretty much in everything in the mid and late 90s and into the early 00s. Bride of Chucky, Jett Jackson, Cheetah Girls, Braceface, Scooby, etc, etc. I like Robbie as well. He's far less goofy than the others, has a more serious take on the character, and it works. Good voice. Sounds like a young man in his late teens.

There is nothing wrong with Dic, the only reason why I like Stephanie a lot more is because she sounds like 14 year old girl. Linda kind of made her voice wavy and she sounded a bit older than 14. Honestly Terri wasn’t bad either, but Tracey and Stephanie are definitely the ones who I think stood out the most. Also can I just say, when people say they think the English Dub sucks, they don’t specify which one. I used to be like this too, but I’ve now figured it out. There is Viz, Cloverway, and Dic. Usually, when people talk smack abt the eng dub they talk about Cloverway, but people who like the eng dub and know a lot abt the dubs talk abt Dic. So when someone says “the eng dub sucks” you need to ask them to specificy, is it Dic or Cloverway they are talking about. Cloverway in my opinion did suck so yeah. I just am more fond of the VIZ dub because I also grew up with it. I was only 6-7 while watching this and it’s just memories. I love all of the different dubs. While there are a lot of people that don't like the DiC and Cloverway dubs for a number of genuinely good reasons I still like them, especially the DiC dub. I just look at it as if it's an alternate universe. What if all of the characters had different names and were probably/maybe American? What if Ami and Luna were British and better than everyone else? What if they were called scouts instead of soldiers? There are tons of questions that I never asked that I now have answers to and for some odd reason I kind of appreciate it. I mean, I've spent countless hours watching the dubs, I wouldn't do it if I didn't like them on some level. Also, why does Minako's original English voice always remind me of Jennifer Hale?

  • @christianacosta_
    @christianacosta_ 3 года назад +6

The DiC dub and Viz dub equally hold a special place within me. The DiC dub captures my childhood and exhibits Sailor Moon as the superhero cartoon I love. I watched the whole Viz dub during quarantine and I was able to understand the story beyond a superhero since there was no censorship. It made me fall in love with Sailor Moon all over again. It was like a personal character development for me.
I like to think that Terri Hawkes captures the essence of Serena and and Stephanie Shes captures the essence of Usagi. If that makes sense? I refuse to acknowledge Cloverway in all it's entirely, especially Linda Ballantyne - sorrynotsorry. The Cloverway dub came off as lazy.
I also agree with you that Sailor Stars is hard to get though. The dream snatchers arc was probably the hardest one to get through for me. It dragged way too long and I didn't enjoy the story. The majority of the episodes were the 10 minute power up scenes.
    "Please Pegasus, protect everyone's dreams....Twinkle Yell.....Moon...Gorgeous..Medication...."
I enjoyed the DiC music way more. Even at the ripe age of 26, the song Carry On makes me emotional. I plan on watching Crystal and then going back to watch the DiC dub before the year ends.

Terri Hawkes is the best voice for sailor moon ever. It’s the whole reason other than the obvious that I fell in love with this cartoon. She has such a sing song quality to her voice, and she really brings the comedy. Absolute queen energy! 💖

  • @renamons614

Linda Ballantyne's sailor moon sounded like a 40 year old woman. Just straight up 40 years old. Not like a teenager at all. Terri Hawkes has always been my favourite, mostly out of nostalgia, but also she gave so much life and emotion to Serena/Usagi. Roland Parliament really did an amazing job with the directing for the DiC dub. If you haven't read his book (Sailor Moon Reflections), it's a great insight into behind-the-scenes of the DiC dub, and a must have for anyone who's a fan of the DiC dub.
EDIT: Just wanted to add that the MUSIC in the DiC dub is a huge part of the nostalgia for me. But even taking off those nostalgia-tinted glasses, the DiC soundtrack and score absolutely BLEW the original Japanese score, in my opinion.

  • @artisthonyajta

With Cloverway, it sounds really rushed due to the fact that Cartoon Network forced them to dub S and SuperS in about 6 months. That’s why a lot wasn’t censored visual wise in those season because they didn’t have enough time to fix anything.

Personally I adore every part of the DiC dub (aside from Linda Ballantyne and the mass censorship). I thought the goofy but not too goofy voices were cute and pretty realistic. It makes the DiC anime different from other dubs, especially these days, as most anime prefer to have the female characters sounding super kawaii with an innocent and child like voice, while trying to have them also be relatable like for example being late for school or tripping over, it comes off as more cutesy than the relatable and goofy vibe that Serena (Usagi) gives off. Like in the original animation as a whole, her cuteness doesn't feel forced imo.
And then Luna having a mature british voice and Artemis having that deep tone works for them being the senshis advisors. Like at first, it comes off like they have it all figured out but then it flips and you see them struggle just as much as the senshi do, and it especially works for the goofy scenes. But the mature voices can give you the feel that they're adults with an important role, and even they don't have it all figured out, but that's ok because they always figure it out in the end.
I feel like each senshis voice fits them perfectly.
Usagi having an extremely goofy voice to fit the goofy animation and her personality works so well, and then even in serious moments, when she's being serious with that same goofy voice but it doesn't come off as goofy when it's not supposed to. It works well.
Ami having a posh voice gives the vibe that she's more mature and more educated than the others.
Mina (Minako) having that type of typical teenage popular girl type of voice gives the vibe that she's the one that every other scout looks up to and wants to be (mainly Serena/Usagi). Her voice kinda gives the chick-flick type of vibe imo. I'm not entirely sure how to explain it lmao.
Lita (Makoto) has an extremely tomboyish voice with a somewhat raspyness to it that fits her perfectly, especially when it comes to her attacks. Her voice fits with the action so much. And then the cute turn around where she actually loves cooking, which is seen as a typically feminine thing to do, but then she is like the least feminine out of the inner senshi. I love that contrast.
Reis voice is super serious and has that tsundere vibe to it without the cute aspect feeling forced. Her voice fits well for when she's arguing with Serena (Usagi) and then being super serious with ritiuals. She has the perfect kind of "mean girl" of the group vibe, without coming off as too unlikeable.
Rini (Chibi-Usa) has one of my fav voices, the perfect bratty yet cute voice for a lovably annoying (but not too annoying) brat. I adore her voice so much and could never truly understand why they was so much hate for her. I thought she was amazing.
Molly (Naru) also has one of my fav voices. I watched Sailor Moon way before my obsession with New York rocketed, so my love for her voice isn't just because she has that Brooklyn accent.
I always felt like it suited her and she completely stole the scenes she was, I just feel like it ABSOLUTELY SUCKS that she wasn't in Sailor Moon more, and I really dislike how she faded out of the show without a real explanation (I have a lil head canon as to why she disappeared, but I'll keep that to myself for now).
Basically, I feel like the unique variety of voices feels so much more perfect, realistic and homey to me. I mean we live in a world where it feels like most anime characters have to have that perfect cute voice and kawaii vibe, especially if they're a kawaii anime girl or a magical girl, so for me, Sailor Moons DiC dub is like the perfect contrast from the other Sailor Moon dubs, and most other anime dubs.
I don't just love it for the nostalgia.💜

I have watched so much anime in my lifetime and I have to agree that nowadays English dubs are no longer preferable to me. It’s nice to see someone review the dub from a pretty neutral spot, not blinded by nostalgia but also not completely hating on the original.
Forgive me cause I don’t remember the names of the voice actors as I’m typing this. Personally the voice of Usagi was the same as the voice of Ayu Tateishi from the Ultra Maniac dub so the transition was a bit easier for me having heard her before. I think the the voice of Sakura from Naruto was kind of fitting for Ami since their characters are both the smart type. I didn’t recognize the voice actors for Rei, Mako, or Minako but I definitely think their voices fit the personalities. Honestly speaking the older sounds of the voice actors in the cloverway dub were a bit jarring, even now considering I’m more aware that they’re teens.
