Those small manga books are delicate. Over time the pages start to peel off the book. The glue starts to fade. They become a mess. That's why I don't touch them anymore to preserve them.

My SuperS volume 2 began falling apart in the early 2000’s. I read those mangas repeatedly and it has taken some damage over the years. Used to take it to school with me and everywhere else. I now keep them in a container box away from dust and further damage.

Despite them Americanizing a few things, like calling Usagi "Bunny," and the LOADS of typos throughout the books, I still have a soft spot for the Mixx editions. The first manga I ever owned was a copy of Sailor Moon Super S vol. 1 which I found in Hot Topic. It was completely unexpected, since I had no idea there were plans to bring the original manga to the US (hell, I barely knew there *was* a Sailor Moon manga, or even what a manga was back then), and I was unbelievably excited to get my hands on it. I didn't have enough money to buy it, so my two good buds who I was shopping with chipped in the rest for me, which I was really touched by. I still remember reading it on the drive home, completely fascinated by the artwork and hardly believing I was finally getting to see this exciting new arc of the series (people take it for granted now, but this was long before anime streaming, DVDs, or even VHSs were common, and Cloverway hadn't even dubbed Sailor Moon S yet). It all seemed so brand new and incredible back then.
I would really love to buy all the Eternal editions, but I only finished buying the smaller Kodansha editions a few years ago, and I'm a little annoyed that now I'm supposed to buy the same books *again* -_- But we'll see how long I can hold out before I cave, lol. They *do* look worth it.

And 3) I love think the size is perfect! But tysm for this!! I have the 2011 set. Around the time Sailor Moon was originally airing in Canada, I was absolutely a huge fan of the show, but never into collecting Sailor Moon merchandise, outside of a few dolls. (What money I had went to Beatles CDs.) I always kind of knew it was originally a comic type book, but I don't remember seeing them. So when I saw the 2011 manga in the bookstore, I immediately started buying them up. Because of this (and the general fact that what spending money I have still goes to music related purchases) I haven't thought to buy the Eternal set. But, now that I know there are some interesting differences, I might start to rethink it. :)

Sorry if it's already been mentioned in the comments but as far as Naoko's notes go, even in the Japanese version of the 2nd edition, her notes were completely removed (which is so sad! I would love an updated official translation of them since I know Mixx/TokyoPop took liberties with them including adding in stuff that wasn't there to make it more relevant to what SM was doing in the US at the time).
Unfortunately, quality wise, the Mixx/TP versions either had cheap glue or just due to age, tend to start falling apart (so please be careful with them!). I've noticed that the 2nd edition released by Kodansha already has page discoloration. I'm guessing that just has to do with the paper they chose. My books have mostly stayed on shelves over the years (though nothing else protective over them) and they've turned color. :(

I love the tiny Mixx ones and have them all, but the first volume is utterly wrecked. I carried it around with me in middle school, read it during lunch and lent it out to my Moonie friend (huge mistake, she ripped it) until the pages started falling out and the spaghetti sauce was in too deep to wipe down. Later, the individual issues were always in tow too, which were more noticeably comic books and got me in way more trouble. Didn't help that on more than one cover, they let "Bunny" be naked and in bed with "Darien" 😂 Honestly I thought it was clever to give her the name "Bunny," inkeeping with the cutesiness of "Usako," and it taught me the "rabbit in the moon" Japanese myth. Too bad that Naoko's notes didn't make it to Eternal! They were such fun and had so much behind the scenes information 😢 I'll forever treasure my yellowed, torn and earmarked PocketMixx, but after buying the first Eternal to replace my old Mixx ($10 new at a second-hand store) I think I'll take them all. The updates in artwork are mostly for the better, the colored pages make me swoon, and the translation is so natural. Thank you for this video! (though I'm still bummed IGLive won't show me your reading of that awful novel lol).

Interesting to see the English versions, cause I only know the German ones!^^ It's quite similar: The first version was flipped completely and had no coloured pages. They also used the German dub names - including Bunny. xD Bunny was her name in several countries, but I think it's better than Serena, cause it's a translation of Usagi.
Our Eternal Edition is smaller (but still bigger than the re-edition). But - and are the only country to have that - it's hardcover!^^ Unfortunately we don't have those "glossary" pages in the back, neither in the re-edition, nor in the Eternal Edition. Naoko Takeuch's notes are only in the very first edition, which is very hard to get nowadays. (But I think the pages in the back aren't her notes, it's just a glossary and some background information?) The translation issue is the same: The first one was easy to understans, but sometimes incorrect; the second one was correct, but sounded a little odd and the Eternal Edition is the best.
I actually like the art style of the re-edition, at least from Mars on. (Yeah, Sailor Moon and Mercury don't look that great, but I really like the other covers.)
There's one advantage the re-edition has compared to the Eternal Edition: it's cheaper. I don't know about the US, but the German Eternal editions are very expensive.

Darn now you're making me want to re-read the manga through eternal edition. I'll probably wait untill I get further in the anime though because I keep making comparisons if I watch and read them too close togeather.
I also want to own the Mixx version now you sold me on it lol. What did you mean by thing version of the mixx one anyway?
The first Kodansha print also uses 'sempai' instead of 'senpai' which I think a lot of people had a tendancy to mispronounce in then...including myself.

Back in the day Mixx released individual chapters in an American comic style format. The cover art was typically the art from the Japanese Nakayoshi release in 92. They're a little hard to find, and are more expensive and they, if i remember correctly, only published up to the Dream arc in that format.

    • @saintfighteraqua
      @saintfighteraqua 3 года назад

@@tenjou0 Yes, they did individual issues of the manga through the Infinity Arc.
Oddly, if I remember right, they started releasing Stars in Mixxzine and SuperS (what they called the Dream Arc) in volumes before the Infinity Arc was even finished. It was Super (pun intended) confusing!

    Great Review,
I have all of the 2011 version and the Tokyopop version and the chic comics of the sailor moon manga!! What is the actual differences in the sailor moon 2011 and 2019 versions? I know that the eternal edition is very heavy to hold (from the last time that I picked one up at a books&million) and I know that they are a little bit more that the 2011 in price, but my main question is is it the same as the 2011 or no?

She has said the translations are so different in each one of them. The Eternal editions are re-translated to sound more conversational. The og Kodansha edition sounds as if Google translated it.

i remember reading the collectors version which is the 1st 1. it was said about 18 volumes and yeah i was confused of calling her bunny but i thought it was really cute since it fits her well. i did read the dream arc version of it and it was very dramatic but romantic. i did read the kodanca version of it and it wasn't 2 bad but yeah it was a bit 2 much and dated but I'll still read it. i'm really curious of wanting 2 get the eternal addition since it looks so beautiful.

I have that original manga from the 90's and 90% of them I purchased myself from the store, I actually had to finish the collection years later as these stopped production in the US when Stars dropped in the Manga and the US lost their collective shit. I have the 2011 edition, and I am currently collecting the Eternal editions as well. I have read the 90's books in 2013 for nostolgia and got a headache and took FOREVER to read them. Only because of the fact that I am now so used to how a manga is supposed to be read. Due to the fact that I have them all of them I haven't had a chance to look at all three of them as the 90's ones were stored away, but I will get to do it soon enough.

Fun fact: the first Kodansha version is releast all arond the world just in forma alike they published it in japon (without the translation. Of cours ^^), and like manga orriginaly are releast over ther 🤗 they do alike cause they was thinking that fan worldwild will like a more "originaly japan's plublishing" one version.😁
The floffy cover, flying away protect cover book, and this sorte of thin grey paper sheats style, is totaly the forma how all mangas are orriginaly releast in japan directly.🙂

I can't even begin. I haven't started buying any of the manga yet because I haven't been able to afford it, but I think I'd end up having to get the smaller Kodansha edition simply because of the price point, although I would prefer the Eternal Edition. I've read some of the smaller Kodansha edition already, and I had an easier time reading the two volumes of Codename: Sailor V than I did the 4 or 5 volumes of the main Sailor Moon manga.
Like the flow seemed easier to me. I enjoyed Codename: Sailor V so much, and then starting Sailor Moon, it honestly felt completely different. It took way more time to process the artwork vs the text and I found myself confused sometimes as to what the point being made was with specific statements, and yeah, it did feel very stiff and unnatural.
This was back in 2016, and the friend I borrowed the manga from was like "No, these are the definitive versions of the manga. This is how they're supposed to read, because it's a direct translation from the Japanese version, and way better than the old ones we got. You should feel lucky that we eve have this new version!" He was really offended that I wasn't thoroughly enjoying the manga, and was annoyed that I would feel that way after the Sailor V mangas, because in his opinion, they were the same translation, so I was just "looking for things to be annoyed about" when in reality, I was very new to manga in general and had no clue that it wasn't just me. So I took him at his word that the problem was me and not the manga edition.
Thank you so much for uploading this video, Sailor Tortilla, & for confirming that it wasn't just me having a problem with the translation, and I really wish I had seen this when it first went up rather than 2 years later.

I just finished Sailor Moon on hulu for the first time, and the show is honestly one of the best I've seen. I really adore it! I would love to dig deeper into the series and get the manga, so I watched this video to see which series of them I should get. The Eternal ones are too expensive for me, so I think I have to buy the Kodansha :( I really don't want to. I would ask the aid at my school who saw Sailor Moon back in the 90's if I could borrow her manga, but to my understanding, she never read the manga. Ahh also the “I will punish you” isn’t specially stated in the Japanese, it’s just the noun “punishment” that can have the “to do” verb inferred but it’s not explicitly stated, so the mixx version isn’t leaving out any dialogue. It mainly just doesn’t align with the anime’s English translation.
