I know a lot of people that mention Gene Hoglan as THE greatest drummer in Death, but for me it was always Reinert. I know, this is no competition. But... Anyway, true giant, a musical genius.

I saw them live with Sean in Madrid with my band...what a great musicians, awesome energy. Before them where playing other prog metal bands but when Cynic started, the whole atmosphere changed, they begun with a pray, all of them on their knee, the stage was cleaned, with no amps, only with their fractal fx, in ear, Sean had a methacrylate (transparent plastic for the acoustics, isolate the drum kit). Same here. I was a teenager, and never heard of or even seen some of the words/terms they were using in their lyrics, like Uroboric, Maya, Cosmic Mother, Sri Cosmic Sea, etc. And that's not saying anything about the actual compositions... This band literally changed my life, without hyperbole.
None has topped these guys. Thing is that despite the complexity and difficulty of their chops they DO NOT OVERPLAY. It's a very natural fluid expression that serves feeling. I've been to a small gig of Cynic (was a luxury) mostly filled with musicians in audience, all jaw dropped and you can try fixed on the double pedal and hat, the fretless, the crazy legatto... but in the end you get drowned by the beautiful music, which I might add was like a tornado of love and hate, sadness and joy, peace and war... all mixed together in such a natural way. What an amazing experience.
I get it...you want it to be "really" live....but as a life long Cynic fan...I am truly grateful to have visuals to go with the incredible songs. You can see the chord changes and solos...Sean R being a fugging Maestro....Sean M showing why he is the most unique bass player I have ever seen. I too have seen this band when they toured with Cannibal Corpse back in the day and 3 times with Robin and Tymon and ALL of those live shows were amazing. There are many live shows from the Traced in Air tour on youtube, but I LOVE that this one features the original core. Thank you Pudding Broadcast for sharing. I loved every minute.
I agree with everything you said...I wish I had seen them with the original lineup, but I got to see them w/ Tymon and Robin three times. And the vocals on Integral Birth are unlistenable, his in ears must have been off or something :|

I saw Cynic play in Belfast during their Traced In Air tour. they booked a small venue, the Limelight, which has a maximum capacity of 750 people. me and my buddy arrived to find the venue completely EMPTY save for a handful of fans. when Cynic took the stage, there couldn't have been more than 30 people in the audience. I felt really bad for the band... but it was awesome to hear them play in such an intimate setting. despite the extremely sparse crowd, they gave it their all 100% and played the full 2 hour set. really humble, down-to-earth guys and awesome talent
At first when I heard that in the acoustic version of integral birth the vocals are different from original I was dissapointed, but the way Masvidal had sing it has its own way, and it really gave me a chill :D Great gig

I've seen them a couple times.. back in 90 or 91 I think with death and pestilence was the first time and once with cannibal corpse and they just tore it up man.. so sick.. Sean is a beast on the drum kit.. he's amazing.. the whole band was incredible.. they had Tony choy on bass then and I think he did double duty those nights.. he was in pestilence and cynic and was just fuckin killer.. this bassist is awesome too man.. the stuff these guys produce is insane.. very cool band.. always loved cynic.. different and unique.. thanks for sharing, cheers..

Sean is a beast on the drum kit.. he's amazing.. the whole band was incredible.. they had Tony choy on bass then and I think he did double duty those nights.. he was in pestilence and cynic and was just fuckin killer.. this bassist is awesome too man.. the stuff these guys produce is insane.. very cool band.. always loved cynic.. different and unique.. thanks for sharing, cheers..
