This album has saved my life and sanity an unnumbered amount of times. I am.greatful to the artists for sharing this masterpiece. From the lyrics to the music itself, a true work of art.
I remember listening to this album when I was younger and feeling unspeakable sadness. About what? I can't even remember. A visage of me probably laying in bed, with a thick vapour of cannabis smoke filling the room, in the early hours of the morning. This album on repeat. But I can't remember what the sadness was. I was thinking, always thinking, with tears. I didn't do much as a teenager. Suddenly, if does seem like I've grown since then. If nothing else, I can say that I listened to some timeless music those handful of years ago. This is truly a dark masterpiece, swathed in beautiful melancholy, an absolutely unforgettable journey into the snow covered forests of some Scandinavian country. So beautiful, so sad. I wish I could remember what it was that I was feeling those years ago and bring into the focus of my mind the scope of those old, gone days.
"of some Scandinavian country" Agalloch was an American band, and unless I'm much mistaken, this album (and most of their music) was an exploration of North American(/Native American) folk themes, though obviously taking influence from Scandinavian metal bands who explored their own traditions in a similar way. Just saying, this is probably more inspired by the cold, forested regions of northern U.S. or Canada as opposed to like, Norway. Beautiful post, though.
I moved to the deep south. Temps rarely drop below 40 degrees here. I dont get nearly as much agalloch time as I should. But when it's 19 degrees in southern louisiana youre damn sure im listening to agalloch.
As I stand outside watching the snow fall and gather on the ground and various other objects, it is around this time of year that I will put this album on. Such subtle beauty, hidden away from everyday eyes that unfold unto me. It may not change much, but I've always found a divine grace in the mundanity of moments like this. Every little flake has as purpose, a destination to arrive to. It makes me wonder what or where my ultimate termination is. Such grand ideas that our little human minds cannot possibly know. And yet I strive everyday to achieve it. Awwh... see? I wish I could be this poetic in front of strangers or the coffee shop attendants I visit every day at work. There is much hidden beauty in our darkest depths. Who's got a lighter?
You think however you like buddy. But there is no purpose in any of those little flakes. Or in your life. It’s just subatomic particles swirling aimlessly and endlessly.
Thanks Agallorch!
This will always be one of my top favorite albums of all time. I wish I could personally thank each member for allowing me to experience this beauty. Thank you Agalloch, it’s a shame I discovered you after the band’s dismemberment

Its that time of year to curl up with a blanket and your favorite drink and listen to this masterpiece. Stare out the window to see the cold, icy mother nature at work
It's difficult to put into words how much this album means to me. When I listen it's as if a goddess from the abyss is cradling me with a cold but calming embrace. And all the sweet, magical darkness in the world calls me to my shadowy roots, to return home.

This is truely incredible, I've heard it so many times now and I can hardly explain how intense this sounds. I've got this in my recommended a few times and I also read that this is supposed to be one of the greatest metal albums of all time - and I highly doubt that anyone who clicked on this has regretted their decision, and I also believe most people have listened to this more than once, just like me!
Larga vida a Agalloch.

It will forever have a special place in my heart and soul! XXXXX
Give Vvilderness' album Devour the Sun a listen if you've never heard it. Somewhat in the same vein as this musically, and certainly very nature-oriented.
If you're still looking, Elderwind's first album "Magic of Nature" is excellent atmospheric black metal. It's a very magical album with lots of chimes and bells, I'd highly recommend it.
Less than a dozen days of the year in central NC could truly be considered "cold" by yankee standards, but that just makes me appreciate them even more whenever I listen to this album while working another long ass day outside in 98-F + humidity. I swear nothings worse than working the coldest days of the year except the hottest. Heat makes you stupid.
This record is so unique. One thread of emotions. I just love it. Out of genre experience. Listening to this is like having a conversation with someone.. or something
A Desolation Song brought tears to my eyes, i've only been touch soo deeply by a few songs. I think Atmospheric Black Metal, and similars, have a very special power.
@@andthegreatcolddeathofthee1737 That's one of the many amazing things about Agalloch: their songs are just like paintings, words and melodies melt togheter to create images that are different for each one.

This album will always have a special place ... Mostly in time slike these, where it is cold and harsh outside it gives me this special feel.
"of some Scandinavian country"
Agalloch was an American band, and unless I'm much mistaken, this album (and most of their music) was an exploration of North American(/Native American) folk themes, though obviously taking influence from Scandinavian metal bands who explored their own traditions in a similar way. Just saying, this is probably more inspired by the cold, forested regions of northern U.S. or Canada as opposed to like, Norway.
Beautiful post, though.
You are ok
Lol your trying to hard good ball
i felt this comment, sad teenagers angry at nothing really sums it up.
The "In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion" is one of the most beautiful songs !
I moved to the deep south. Temps rarely drop below 40 degrees here. I dont get nearly as much agalloch time as I should. But when it's 19 degrees in southern louisiana youre damn sure im listening to agalloch.
I grew up in Texas and I would listen to Agalloch in the 100+ degree heat, just had to pretend really hard I was somewhere else lol
It doesn’t matter, black metal always makes me feel cold
I feel that man, I’m in assumption parish so I know exactly what you’re talking about.
15F is usually when I stop listening to Agalloch. Cheers from Russia
It's 110° F in Arizona and I'm still rocking this album! Not like I leave the A/C during the summers here anyways lol

Been a long long journey listening to Agalloch and I will never get enough it just like magic , it takes me far far away
The layering of the guitars is a masterpiece. The lyrics are poetry. The arrangement is flawless. This album is brilliant.
You can't live throughout the winter or autumn without listening to Agalloch
Such a journey 20 years later, what a captivating album full of emotion
This whole album is just spiritual food, definitely on my top 5 favourite albums, it scratches something on my brain that few music does
I agree 100%! This album is a masterpiece. Haunting and majestic.
This album is pure perfection... a timeless masterpiece. Thanks for bringing back! 💘
sad but pure
Thanks Agallorch!
41 years old and just now finding this...What a shame.
The ideal album for an 'endless solitude' at night.
Simplesmente
This will always be one of my top favorite albums of all time. I wish I could personally thank each member for allowing me to experience this beauty. Thank you Agalloch, it’s a shame I discovered you after the band’s dismemberment
Thankfully I got to see them, I did thank the drummer for this, and for an old music blog he used to have.. found a lot of good stuff thru “cosmic hearse”.
Who dismembered them!?
The conection between In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion and Odal always mesmerize me.
In Odal, they used elk skull for percussion.
Its that time of year to curl up with a blanket and your favorite drink and listen to this masterpiece. Stare out the window to see the cold, icy mother nature at work
Im afraid I cant do that. I live in Florida. This is either my number 1 or number 2 album of all time.
Only discovering this tonight. I haven't fallen in love with an album this quickly since I first heard Pallbearer's Foundations of Burden.
It's difficult to put into words how much this album means to me. When I listen it's as if a goddess from the abyss is cradling me with a cold but calming embrace. And all the sweet, magical darkness in the world calls me to my shadowy roots, to return home.
True

i just wanna say thank you to agalloch for making this masterpiece of an album.
There are cuts in the upload :(
Back in around 2010ish a friend recommended this album to me. I wasn't able to get into it then, but every couple of years I'd come back and see if I could hear the great album he was talking about, and each time I understand a little more.
My friend just died last night and this album is touching base hard right now
Sorry for your loss, brother.
Condolences buddy, sorry for your loss and I hope you're holding on
my condolences
He is in a happier place.
Sombre yet uplifting. Don't know why but this just hits the sweet-spot. Good for the soul. Genius.
I love to mountain bike in the woods. Listening to music while doing so is one of my favorite things in the world. I can’t wait to be pedaling my heart out listening to this!
XXXXX reading the comments and many say this helped them in times of sorrow or of need etc.... for a 52 year old guy like me, that was the Ride the lightning album from Metallica and the song fade to black especialy, it's simply from another planet, you cant beat those lyricsman, and the composition and feel. It will forever have a special place in my heart and soul! XXXXX
I listen to this album when i fall asleep to keep bad dreams at bay.
I used to go to sleep with these guys as well, really love their sounding, it's a shame they've fallen apart :(
Bro same here
Same here dude, melodic/atmospheric black metal puts me in such a trance where i fully zone out into the music. Perfect for falling asleep.
Agalloch, Empyrium... Two bands, two different worlds but the same inspiration: nature. Difficult to find today some bands as good as them!
Give Vvilderness' album Devour the Sun a listen if you've never heard it. Somewhat in the same vein as this musically, and certainly very nature-oriented.
Vinterriket same
TackleberryFife, thank you☺ I will listen to this album as soon as possible😎
Varg Vikernes, thank you!😎
If you're still looking, Elderwind's first album "Magic of Nature" is excellent atmospheric black metal.
Buffalo ,NY
Can’t work a minute outside under 65F
I’ve sided house in 20 Fahrenheit….
Lovely ……hate you heat
hi Nik!
This record is so unique. One thread of emotions. I just love it. Out of genre experience. Listening to this is like having a conversation with someone.. or something
The sound of a long and bleak Minnesota winter... perfect album.
I’ll never recover from the sheer geniuses called Agalloch!!!! Immeasurable amounts of brilliance put into this album!!!!!!!
A Desolation Song brought tears to my eyes, i've only been touch soo deeply by a few songs. I think Atmospheric Black Metal, and similars, have a very special power.
When I listen to Agalloch, I can see the mist wafting through a dark forest and it gives me comfort.
@@andthegreatcolddeathofthee1737 That's one of the many amazing things about Agalloch: their songs are just like paintings, words and melodies melt togheter to create images that are different for each one.
goddamn right
This is well done , Like the Celtic pagan sound . The guitar is not so distorted you cant pick out the notation like some pagan rock/metal , very beautifully done . Good Job Agalloch /93/636
Yeah I’m not even the biggest fan of this type of music but my older brother is heavy into this scene and he showed me this album back in like 2008. Game changer.
Cheer's from Toronto, Canada all!!! Stay safe & stay strong!! How music & Agolloch brings us all together through this pandemic globally!!! Now that's raw power!!\m/ \m/
Dont forget to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of this eternal masterpiece on 08.13.2022.
heck yeah \m/
2024
What an amazing album, I listened to the whole thing all the way through in one sitting.
I'm not even into metal (the folk elements drew me into this) but this is such a brilliant album!
🐇
This album will always have a special place ... Mostly in time slike these, where it is cold and harsh outside it gives me this special feel. There are so many good albums out there, but not many can deliver and create feelings like this one. It is like a journey of walking trough a sheer endless forest and being cold and lost, but then arriving at a warm wooden cabin
Catharsique at its finest.
True passion of timeless music composer. Not for everyone. Pause and breath. For me its a deliverance every single time I go back at it. ❤️
I can feel every statement you said. This album for me is a required escape.
to be honest i can't live without this Album
Amazing... No more words... No more opinions... Winter, North, Doom packed together. Heil from Russia and Estonia.
Odal always gives me the chills...
No words needed to convey such emotions
One of THE BEST albums I have ever heard. Even in my native, polish language it is difficult for me to catch and describe fully my reception of this masterpiece. I cannot imagine better companion to the trips into the wildlands. Thank you so much for this!
One of the most beautiful pieces of art I've ever had the pleasure to listen to. These guys and Woods Of Ypres are out of this world!
Hey, you. Whoever reading this, this is your sign. Everything's gonna be okay. You did not come this far to give up. I believe in you
