Anything by these guys is gold. One thing to understand with Rush is they always pushed their own boundaries musically, never being complacent or just settling in a formula that was successful in the past. That’s how they stayed fresh and relevant for 40 years. The song you hear will be reflective of the decade it’s from. For a follow-up I’m going to suggest Xanadu live from 1981 Exit Stage Left tour. The multi-tasking they do make them sound like six guys. Alex play six- and twelve-string guitar, Geddy plays bass, 12-string guitar, keyboards, and synth pedals with his feet (don’t forget - he’s the singer!!!), and Neil has an orchestral percussion section at his disposal. You’ll see why these guys were one of the best rock band ever. Cheers! ruclips.net/video/2byjJkN_nVY/видео.htmlsi=WBJidhOAQNzo2w43
I was an angsty 13yo when this came on the radio in 1981. It was the first song that spoke to me, that understood what I was going through. I ran over to my friend's house to tell him about this cool new song by this cool new band (to me). He went over to his dad's albums and pulled out his Rush record collection (everything prior to Signals). He put 2112, side A on the turntable and thus began my love of Rush.
Greatest power trio ever. Best live band ever. Rush rules! Try La Villa Strangiato to see how great they were as musicians. 😊 ps Peart is pronounced like the word pier with a t on the end.
Yes, one part of Rush's timeless appeal is that Neil's lyrics spoke to so many of us, and they continue to speak to a whole new generation of music listeners; for another great example of this, I recommend Witch Hunt, a hidden gem from side 2 of Moving Pictures, as performed on their 2007 Snakes And Arrows Tour video. Cheers from Toronto! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐

This is dedicated to all nerds that went to high schools and did not fit in in with the clicks , But succeeded in life , Neil wrote this song as this is how he was considered in school being a book worm and didn’t feel he fit in , Also Geddy and Alex they went to high school together and considered them selfs outcast
Try Natural Science studio version next , with Lyrics get ready for nothing but Fire , Fire , Fire 🔥 another side of Rush with Rush be ready to expect the unexpected,
Try "Circumstances" from the album Hemispheres (1978). Or try "Analog Kid" from Signals (1982). Or try Natural Science from Permanent Waves (1980). Or try "Xanadu" from Farewell to Kings (1977). Or try "Working Man" from the 2010 Time Machine Tour (originally on their 1974 eponymous first album). Or try Headlong Flight from Clockwork Angels (2013).
This tour started here in Kalamazoo. RUSH always fid s good job of touching on relevance of the times. Check out Counterparts album, the song Driven is a favorite
We have definitely heard that song and agree that it’s a masterpiece. Outside of the Moving Pictures album and the song Working Man I don’t think we have heard anything else from them.
As I have stated on many other Rush reactions... Rush has no bad songs and to me Chicago and Steely Dan as well. Neil Peart so earned the moniker The Professor for his writing and drumming....
Guys, good thing you are getting caught-up on Rush! They have some great Prog-Metal/Prog-Rock from the 1970's! Check out a song called "Anthem"! The best version is from the "All the World's a Stage" live album, from 1976. If you can pull that up on RUclips, you will be scorched!!
First time heard Rush song was Tom Sawyer cover by local band in my high school music event in 1986. It's blown my mind, then I looking for all Rush cassette in all my hometown music stores. Rush music was the part of my life since then.
Rush was always changing and always evolving their sound. Closer to the Heart, Fly by Night and Working Man are examples of their very early work. 2112 if them at their experimental/progressive height............... then you move into the late 70's and early 80's where you go Spirit of Radio, Limelight Natural Science All are well worth listening too............ show their progression of styles over the early part of their career.
I was about 13 when my older brother put this vinyl on the turntable. He walked me through the whole album, to pay attention to the lyrics and themes etc. Which is unusual for a hard rock band lol. But I got it, it came at the right time because I was living the Subdivisions storyline more or less. That whole synth heavy album was very unusual, and actually 100% ahead of its time, not dated at all if you try to imagine the context of the time. You have this expansive sonic pallete with the synths, but at the same time they still had this very hard edge, this rock intensity underlying the precision, and mind blowing instrumentation ... all of which really forced you to lean in and pay attention... it wasn't background party music even though it was plenty catchy. btw Rush's final album Clockwork Angels from 2012 was probably their most metal album, ironically.
Natural Science Live Between the wheels live 2112 studio Camera Eye Witch Hunt Red Sector A Xanadu live Exit stage left. YYZ live in Rio Spirit of Radio Working Man live in Cleveland. Just a few to start with.
Do yourself a big favor watch the live version of this.. do the one off of the snakes and arrows tour they are performing live in Holland.. you can see there work live it is completely awesome I highly recommend that one
I reject the notion that there are "dated" sounds. Sound is always recreated in the present, whether live or by playing a recording, and can be judged in the present. If it sounds good it is good. I listen to music from the past 1000 years, and the good music still lands.
I will give you a little candy. Not only is the song about how society subdivides the "Cool" people from the "Uncool" people, but there is also at least one other additional "sub-meaning" (pardon the pun) to the song. Note that it is directly and indirectly mentioned that there is an irony and dichotomy between people who live in the suburbs vs. people who live in the city. People in the suburbs want to escape the boredom of living there and want to venture into the city where the action is and people in the city want to escape the "rat race" of city life for the peacefulness of the suburbs. The brilliance of Neil Peart the lyricist on display in full technicolor in this song. There is indeed a THIRD "sub-meaning" but I will not deal with that now. As an FYI, I know people who have done their PhD thesis using this song as reference material. That alone speaks volumes. It stands alone as a true 10/10 song with perfection from the first note to the lyrics to the last note. You will never EVER see a song like this made again. #2 on the list would be Tom Sawyer but that's a topic for another day. Keep going with the RUSH reviews. Quite enjoyable.

Appreciate the story, Rush has immediately felt like a band that I have waited way too long to start listening to. Trying to remedy that now!
Guys, guys, guys.... Check out : Natural Science and Jacob's ladder.
Oh, and just FYI, Neil pronounced his name just as it is spelled:
P-ear-T
PS - I was 14 when this song came out, growing up in a suburban city located about 60 miles west of Toronto. The song spoke to me.

Nope, this would be our first Rush reaction, based on the response I don’t think it will be the last!
Subdivisions = The greatest rock song of all time (FOR A MULTITUDE OF REASONS).....PERIOD!

Which Rush songs to react...
Start with Finding My Way, end with The Garden. Cannot go wrong!!!
RUSH = The greatest, most talented and most intelligent band in rock history. Not my opinion, it's a FACT of life. Enjoy!
