THANKS FOR WATCHING FRIENDS!
The more you watch, the more I’ll make videos.
I do not own rights to video
Was a teen in the 80's when this song came out it spoke to so many teens and still does to this day
Exactly. Growing up as a teenager in the 80s was wonderful. Didnt feel it at the time. The 90s, 20s is so unmemorable
Saw this on VH1 Classic when I was a teenager in the 00's, made me a Rush fan for life.
It spoke to me
It will speak to humanity forever
Listening to deep stuff like this requires multiple listenings.
Heart sould mind and body
This song helped so many lost teens...definitely me
The "changing beat" you're noticing is the the song switching among 7/8, 4/4, 7/4, and 6/4 meter. For instance, in the verse starting with the words "Drawn like moths..." it's in 4/4 but when the lyric hits "the timeless old..." in the next line it changes to 7/8 at the syllable "time" and stays in 7/8 for six bars, going back to 4/4 at the word "just." The choruses ("[Subdivisions] In the high school halls...") are in 6/4. Odd meter and meter changes are a hallmark of progressive rock and jazz-fusion; Rush, Genesis, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, and King Crimson made heavy use of them.
Lyrics + the absolutely crisp enunciation of these lyrics is exquisite.
#same. The song came out in 1982. Sh! It spoke to my life so deeply, as that was the year I graduated from HS and it was a crossroads to what I would do next.
#same and same
Ditto
Rush was famous for time changes, sudden, unexpected, and resolved perfectly.
As fantastic as the lyrics are, Rush's brilliant compositions musically stand on their own.
Thanks for direct and articulate responses. You have integrity and are not afraid to express your passion for the music we love!
This band is very mathematic. But if you ignore that you'll catch all the feeling. You are incredibly smart and insightful. You are the youth we need today. Don't mean to be corny, but it's true
The uneven beat is called 7/8 time. Most songs will have 4 quarter notes per measure; 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, et cetera, and so is written as 4/4 time. If you were to write that as 8/8, that would sound 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + et cetera with 8 8th notes.
*+ = "and"
With 7/8, you're counting 1 + 2 + 3 + 4, 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 et cetera.
You're missing that last + after the fourth beat, meaning there are only 7 8th notes.
Well said!
You and your brother are SO mature for your age. Love your reactions, keep it coming.
I hit like before I watch because it's Rush! Greatest band ever!
A sweet young lady😊,rush is amazing keep going you will love them,God bless you my friend.
Heavy and yet very dramatic. One of favs from Rush
I was in high school when this song was released. Early 80's. I completely identified with it's message, "Be cool or be cast out". This song and others turned me into a serious musician. Not listening to "pop" crap and seeking out more meaningful artistic stuff. Yet all these years later I'm still COOL playing in rock bands while the High School "popular crowd" are all old & fat with 3 kids & broke!! I feel you GET IT! Great music / lyrics have nothing to do with race or politics. It's about REAL life. Anyway.... Great reaction!
We have come along way in respecting individuality but still face some of these age old issues. Drum work is next level
So cool to see someone reacting the same way as I did years ago to the air drums. Such an infectious beat. RIP Neal Peart. U n ur Fam are great. Check out the
Live version of this or "YYZ"
Great to see videos being brought back im 50..listen to their music for over 40 yrs b4 the internet Neal peart and Alex lifeson..I think waay ahead of their times...I still can't believe Neal Peart is gone..I hope rock and roll will come back ..just let the electric guitar play..it will bring unity for all of us!!!
They always make you listen. It takes a bit of attention to align your self with the ever changing beats but that's why I enjoy listening to Rush. To me, all Rush music sounds as captivating and beautiful today as it did the first time I heard it. A hundred times I have jammed Subdivisions and I love it the same every time.
Powerful music ! Powerful lyrics ! Powerful video !
I loved your comment about the lyrics, all of which were written by Neil Peart, the drummer. He was an amazing person. I still mourn his passing.
It’s all in there!! The message!!
The lyrics of Subdivisions one can say that every generation has gone through this period of adolescence. All of us during this period of life have so many things that come before us and we choose to observe, listen, mimic. Some things we adopt and become how we act, behave and present ours elves to the ones closest to us and the world. Some for the better and some for the worst. Know that there are things in life that one does not have to go through in order to find out if they’re of benefit to us or not.
Rush has many songs with deep meaning. I hope you do more reactions on their songs and have the lyrics so that you can follow along and not miss the message. Stay safe, much peace and love to you and your family now and in this coming year !!!
From the early ‘80’s.
Just as true now as back then!
this song takes a few listens to get used to, then that haunting keyboard chords & melody gets into your head and it becomes addictive. Ive been listening to it for 38 years and i still love it, and still cant play it perfectly on my drums. The subdivisions are those ugly rows of houses all packed tightly together, and where is a young person supposed to find inspiration coming from that kind of upbringing. Im glad i got to see one show from every tour since 1978, 19 times Ive seen them. They've got 20 albums of great songs, so get busy ! BTW you're very beautiful
Amazing how the lyrics of this particular song has you remembering the "cliques" that you strove to either be in, or shun. The way you want to go the city but as you get older, you realize that the suburbs where you grew up, is where you want to go back to. Free thinkers are dubbed freaks and those that don't follow the social norms or agree are singled out as different. When in truth, they are the ones who create the art, music etc.. Enjoy the music.
I was the kid in this song. It spoke to me. I was 14 in '82 and was definitely socially awkward. I needed this song then. It still speaks to young people and always will.
Rush had a pretty solid fan base following 2112 that grew significantly with Moving Pictures. At this stage of their career many of the early fans did not like the change in sound and style, most of those remained fans however, they were dismissive of anything after Moving Pictures.
IMO this song open the door to many who became a huge part of, what is now known as, the greatest fan base ever.
If you were to take a poll of long time Rush fans, the number of people who first connected with this song would be significant, possibly more than any other individual song. Not their most complex, but maybe their most impactful.
@@jeffmurray1681 and I respect that position. Many others share the same opinion. I choose to look at their catalogue as a whole vs. different eras. For example I do not think Presto is better than 2112, but I do like “the Pass “more than I like “Tears”. I think to totally dismiss an Album or a Song based on a calendar date could lead to missing out on a lot of very good music, but again it’s just my opinion.
✌️☝️☝️✌️
@@jeffmurray1681 nothing wrong with either of those choices, and I would be from the same era, pretty much. La Villa Strangiatto was the song that first captured my attention. I’m also a big fan of Dream Theater and just recently Haken is sneaking in to my rotation little by little.
Love this song!
Rush made music that is so interesting compositionally. Many people that are into “top 40 hits” just don’t get it. If you are looking for something danceable or something that you can even tap your foot along with, you have to look elsewhere. Rush music generally consists time signature changes and that’s what makes it appealing to me. And we haven’t even talked about the lyrics which are quite often deep, interesting and thought provoking.
#ItGetsBetter Eventually you realize that even most of the cool kids were insecure and terrified in their own way.
Great song, love Rush and this song, love your lyrical breakdown as well.
This video was filmed in north York Toronto Canada.at Earl Haig High School. The Guys grew up in that area. For those who are famillar There's a Park just North Of Sheppard Ave dedicated to Alex And Geddy called Lee, Lifeson Arts Park, Very cool
good week to you 😎👍 Next one from Rush - Red Sector A = a song about holocaust .. Geddy Lee( singer ) parents was survive to holocaust .. Deep lyrics by Neil Peart ( drummer )
I'm from inner-city & even though none of the scenery (houses, school halls, teens) looked or felt anything like what I saw growing up, the message is the key. I was never marginalized but being in a band as a high schooler, I was kind of a loner. Always wanting acceptance despite a good set of friends & many parties. I think we all, at one point or many , feel isolated. The world tests us with it's vices & pleasures. I often wonder what this kind of truth to one's self this upbringing fosters.
It's tough for the younger generations to fully understand this song. Their typical social connections are just more synthetic and sanitized than ours. The whole idea of there being people who were misfits or nerds, truly being bullied, trying to fit into school and neighborhood cliques, going to the mall to hang out, basement parties and cruising the strip...you had to live around that time to fully appreciate this song.
I’m extremely pleased to hear you are a teacher! 👍👌✌️There are many bands from the 60’s and ‘70’s that wrote honest songs about important things and usually a positive outlook and music that was epic!!! These songs as you will discover will make you think and hopefully continue the hope they gave us then, but still sadly haven’t accomplished!!! 🥺George Carlin said it best when he said education is only to create people “smart enough for the paper work, but not critical thinking!!” Love your reactions and your family is the bomb!!!👌👍✌️😎
I like your commentary on songs, you seem to get it. Rush wrote some complex songs with excellent lyrics. The drummer was excellent. My personal favorite Rush song is "Tom Sawyer". That has interesting rhythm as well.
Great choice and all the best to continued success and hitting 100K subs!
When impressed 11sec into it, I knew you were really gonna like this!
Saw Rush in Toronto on the Subdivision tour. I see you trying to air drum. Awesome.
"Sorry. I know it's only 11 seconds in..."
They aren't called 'Rush' for nothing! Perfect reaction.
The did, does and will relate to kids forever I believe...sure did me. I was a nerd who loved rush
Love your reactions.
Best Rush song!
Love it!! By 7:08 I think you finally by into the groove of the song, nice job!
I'd gotten this album when it'd come out and felt I needed to listen to this song nearly every day before heading to school. #Same
Great reaction. #same. Try Rush/Roll the Bones (Lyrics video) and Rush/YYZ live in Rio.
Well done ......A+++
Continued props for elevating reactions to something worthy of paying attention to.
That's progressive rock at its finest darlin'.
Great song 1 for the ages
Great song for Toronto suburbs, Scarborough to be sure.
#same. As a older black guy, (I'm 54 yrs old) I was not suppose to listen to rock n roll and was supposed to listen to R&B only. Needless to say, I tried to fit in but, I was unhappy. So, at the expense of being 'cast out', I did a lot of alone time with my beloved Rock n Roll. Nowadays, it's more accepted in a way because if you listen to another genre, people of your peers are less likely to 'cast out' from what I seen. Like in your case, you listen to my favorite band RUSH and don't make that stank face most women make when they are on. I hope people continue to evolve around music because color do not come out of speakers...
These were 3 unpopular kids that formed a band and became world famous. They understand being the cast outs.
This is known as more like what they called Progressive rock. The timing changes a few times throughout the songs in this genre. It is unique but interesting. Kind of strange at first, but then you're kind of like yeah.... I like it. 🙂
You get it! This was me in high school.
RUSH Army don't play.
yes! rush are so good😍
react to rush-afterage
very deep song
I was in Jr High / HS in the 80s ( era of vid ). I am a wheelchair / crutch user from birth. I fought for an actual education. Not special Ed. Based on physical disability alone. Not merit / my actual test scores. I was quote mainstreamed. Since 4th grade. As the first & most of the time only, wheelchair user. Until I got to college. Blending in. Was never going to be a realistic expectation / option. It wasn't in my nature. I couldn't say weather this was a chicken & egg result. I was never a follower. Always spoke up if I felt something was wrong. Had friends, but never did anything I didn't want to. Disability as part of the equation / a bedrock of identity. Meant I absolutely new who I was from a very early age. Fighting for your rights in general. In my case access / an equal education. From an early age will do that. Blending in was never part of my calculous. Getting an education / becoming undeniable. Just to earn opportunities was.
Always be you. Don’t let media, entertainment, or culture shape the person you are. We all would be better off being individuals instead of clinging to tribal instincts
So many of us related. Dealing with bullies and shit.
You have to train your ears to more progressive rock (kinda like Jazz). But I can assure you Neil Peart has never hit a drum out of time. The math checks out!
On one of your Rush reactions you said you loved the guitar and instrumental breaks. You should listen to La Villa Strangiato, an instrumental with one of the best guitar solos in rock music. You’ll like.
Neil Peart the Drummer wrote most of the songs lyrics.
I wonder how many quarters I went through in those old arcades
🎼🐐🐐🐐🎶
La villa stangiato, the trees, 2112 (peep the comic book video), YYZ live in Rio, dozens more. Enjoy, kid.
Signsls celebrate 40 years of its issue
May i suggest their "Presto" album the best of the Rupert Hine produced albums
Toronto’s suburbs 🇨🇦
Please comment on the CITY ZOO,The singer of this song is G.E.M., a very talented female singer
RED SECTOR A true lyrics about geddy l parents in holocaust camps in ww2
this was released 1982
Great review!! Try analog kid.
Another song from them you have to react to is Spirit Of Radio
Rush intentionally made their music difficult to dance to. Alex even admits it! To many time changes in their music, which is part of their brilliance
The Weapon off Signals is probably the most appropriate song for the day.
Count Down is awesome, I saw it live in 82 in San Diego. It was breathtaking, and awe inspiring.
Analog Kid and Chemistry are great too.
I think Countdown is a great song and the video is one of my favorite Rush video's.
@@johncopple6479 I saw it live in 82, San Diego Signals tour...x it was mind blowing with the Shuttle Launching on the big screen with them jamming! I still have the Concert Tee!

🖤❤️🖤❤️🖤
You should check out the song Sail on Sail Away by Moxy.
Great reaction. Rush had a way of giving a message interwoven with fantastic musicianship. If you're interested in more, I recommend:
Big Money (greed and extravagance) - ruclips.net/video/-KqKMJmvk4s/видео.html
The Pass (teen suicide) - ruclips.net/video/qTHJv3SAMBY/видео.html
Keep up with those great reactions!
I like your views on the lyrics of the song and you have great taste in music, maybe you might like papa roach's obsession and broken home's , they do have other good songs such as scars and last resort but you should give a listen to the two songs that i recommended
#same.

Have you realized yet, there are only 3 people playing all this music?
Right now I challenge you to listen to Rush Limbaugh on AM radio. *If you haven't already. Rush Limbaugh can be heard at noon Monday through Friday, but I don't know the station for the city you live in. A recap of the week's shows can be heard on Saturday maybe starting at noon maybe starting at 10:00 a.m. for 2 or 3 hours. Of course I don't expect your video to be 3 hours long but I'd like to hear your review of his program however long you decide to make it. Rush Limbaugh is a pioneer in talk radio and has changed the whole way it has been done for 30 years now. Thank you 💖💖☺️!
React to “alien” by Nick Nittoli
: )
Can you please react to Garbage song called Why do you love me.
Please
Back then you got cast out of your friend circle, or clique for being too different or not conforming to the groups ideals. Today you nearly get cast out of society and it's a streamed event. We've certainly come a long way.
About how long haired kids in the late 60's to early 70's didn't fit into typical middle class suburbia. To their parents whom had survived nazi concentration camps in WW2 it was paradise but to these guys in the band it was boring, sterile, and uptight. Geddy said it was especially rough on him because he was jewish.
i bet she sits in the front row in school.... whip smart girl
