Robbie was the main composer and guitarist of The Band, who earlier in their career backed up Bob Dylan. He didn't sing much with The Band, but I think he has a nice voice. They were an epic Canadian band. A mix of so many musical influences. Basically country rock. But more.

He was one of the five members of the legendary band "The Band". A movie suggestion for you would be their farewell concert video from 1976 The Last Waltz.

No one's mentioned The Band yet.
Another drummer suggested this album to me waaaaay back in 1988. This song and American Roulette (with Bozzio on drums) have always stood out.
Hey John, thx for listening! Song is just about falling in love, but moody.
You might have noticed the funky way the drummer plays with the beat during the verses, only landing on the downbeat every four measures.
That was Manu Katché, who played with Peter Gabriel (In Your Eyes live, all of So), and Sting (Soul Cages, album) and a million others. He's the French Vinnie Colaiuta, and Rush were huge fans of him.
Next month, I'm gonna stay down in New Orleans and hit you with the man, the myth, the Cat (Tommy the Cat, that it)...
    Tom Waits.
Texture for days, man, texture for days...
    🤘🤘

This entire album is amazing. It won the Juno award for album of the year. So many great artists were on it, from the guy singing on this track who is from the group The Bodeans, to other artists like U2 and Peter Gabriel. Robbie worked on this album with producer Daniel Lanois, who was also working with U2 on their Joshua Tree album during the same period.

I'm pretty sure that's lanois playing the unique instrument in the video too. Not 100 percent sure though

RIP Robbie, that instrument you were asking about is a Suzuki Omnichord. The lady in the video is Maria Mckee another pretty well known musician, and the video was directed by Martin Scorsese.

Great choice, and rarely covered. He followed this album with Contact from the Underworld of Redboy which also has some great cuts, particularly "Unbound".

“Storyville” came between this, his self-titled first solo album and “… Redboy”- and I think it's the best album of the three (for listening to the full album straight through at least), even though my favorite songs of his ("Unbound" being one of them) are mostly on the other two albums.

That instrument (played by Daniel Lanois) is called an "Omnichord" - kind of like an electric autoharp.

On bass, you had Tony Levin, a member of King Crimson, Peter Gabriel's band and he played with Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe
