Breaking my collar bone on Berm Creek

  • After doing some work on my backyard mountain bike trails, I decided to finally build some kind of a jump at the bottom. In rushing to put it together and give it a test, I ended up breaking my collar bone and shoulder blade. This puts my off the bike for the season, but at least you can enjoy the story leading up to it.
Given the size of these rollers and the circumstances leading up to the crash, this is easily my dumbest injury to date.

The reason he broke his collar bone was because he cut corners, even though he knew he needed to build a berm to get The speed he needed, he got impatient. It wasnt the "sketchyness or risk factor that broke his bone. It was improper trail building. At least that's what he said. I've paid the price for cutting corners recently on my mountain bike. I broke the swingarm because of neglect on the shock and pivots. Live and Learn.

There comes a time you just have to accept it's time to slow down a bit. That point is when you don't get up as quickly as you went down, it hurts more than it used to and you take longer to heal. It's nature's way of telling you to chill out a little and whilst you shouldn't give up you should slow down. I'm still cycling at 70 years of age. I used to play soccer, rugby, run cross country, run roads races and even a couple of marathons all that along with competitive swimming. I was a full time firefighter and sporting and work injuries meant I retired with spinal disabilities aged 46 years. I spent a few years feeling sorry for myself recovering from three major surgeries and then suffered a heart attack at 68!!! I haven't given up cycling, in fact, I'm really getting back into it but you have to listen to your body. I was doing far too much and I paid the price. If it hurts rest it. The pressure of making videos on time is not good for your health. Take it easy and heal. We will wait for the videos.

Sorry to hear man! I broke my right clavicle last year. Oct 1, 2017. Broke into 5 pieces and was oddly not the most painful part of my crash. My hip took the full force of an awkward OTB onto flat. I elected for surgery and a plate along with 7 screws re-attaching everything to normal length. This was a great choice for me. Being a big dude and loving symmetry on my body, my clavicle is fully healed and the same length as my left one. I also elected for a second surgery to remove the plate two weeks ago. I did so not because it bothered me so much (although it made a backpack a bit uncomfortable and hurt a little every time giving my daughter “piggy backs”), but I was more worried about breaking it again, which my doctor forwarded me that it could be much harder to repair. Anyhoo. I have X-rays if it broken and with a plate. Don’t yet know how to share, but would gladly do so. Let me know.
I hope you heal well. Love the videos no matter if you ride or not. Keep up being awesome.

Hardcore fall; totally love the honesty and no bullshit view of an injury that you could have just played off, instead you released a raw, honest and respectable take of the truth... thank you!
I am late in viewing this video as you are up and running by now, but always wishing you agility (to beat the sketchy), to run the right line, and success.

    Seth!
I love your videos! (Don’t we all?!)
I had two major reconstructive knee surgeries in 2018 (June and October) - rappelling gone wrong...
With almost a year up from the first procedure, I have been getting on my bike a little each day and have been slowly practicing/relearning those basic mtb movements. All said and done, I will miss 2 seasons! :/
Thanks for posting this video! It is a great reminder that we all get injured and then have to work (frustratingly) to rebuild these skills each time.
Back to those green lines for me (for now).
    Stay healthy!
(I am sure that you are already better by now).

I’ve been watching your videos for some time, but I haven’t commented until now, but this time I have some pretty solid advice for you. Not mountain biking advice, as I’m a total novice at that, but collarbone breakage advice. I’ve broken my collarbone twice, and I can say that I really, truly feel sorry for you. The first time I broke mine was skiing, and throughout the healing process the pain wasn’t as bad as the feeling of not being able to do anything active. I was about three weeks from healing fully and I decided to play some ultimate frisbee with my friends... which ended in re-breaking the bone. So, I was mostly incapacitated for a total of six consecutive months. My advice is not to get impatient or try to rush the healing process, because the potential to re-injure yourself is quite high, and having a broken collarbone sucks. I’m sure we will all be understanding if you post less content for the next few months. Good luck living the one-armed life, and just remember to be patient.

The trouble with collar bones is that they are so thin that when healed, unlike thicker bones, they become far weaker and prone to breaking again. Each break exacerbates the problem and it takes longer to heal. Twice as painful too.

When I was in highschool, one of my teammates on the basketball team broke his collar bone playing some backyard football. He rushed to get back for the basketball season and rebroke it his first game back, diving for a basketball. Definitely don't rush the healing.

The Giro Switchblade MIPS helmet has a removable full chin guard. Even with the guard off, the helmet is still fully compatible with most neck braces. Almost the best of both worlds. The only stupid looking protective gear, are the ones that are forgotten or consciously not worn, defying common sense.
