  • Škoda Rapid Coupe 1984. This Škoda was sitting since 2005. It had one owner. When he sold it, it was stored for years in the showroom a modern Škoda dealership. After all those years it's time to bring it back on the road and get it road legal again. It's a low milage car, all original. Only has done 26.000 km form new.
Was this model always called Garde in Czechoslovakia?
The Rapid/Garde is a 2-door coupé derived from the Škoda 120 LS 4-door saloon, powered by the same 1.2-litre (1174 cc) engine.

Looking here, to my eyes more stylish than a Ford Capri. Pure coupe lines. And the alloys set it off perfectly.

This is certainly a beautiful little car and well worth renovating. The Rapid was once described in the car press as being great fun, very much 'a poor mans Porsche'!
I had a couple of Skoda 120Ls and loved them, but I'd always wanted a Rapid. In the early 1990s, I nearly bought a 1980s fuel injected model in the UK, but a test drive sadly revealed some big mechanical issues - I think it had been badly treated by a 'boy racer' or something.

Thanks! I’m really happy with my poor mans 911! 😃 Until recently I always ended up with saloons like you. Always wanted a Rapid but somehow nice saloons came to me, needed to have them too. I never sell my old Škoda’s, just expand them. As collecting old Škoda’s is addictive to me. ☺️ But now I finally have a Rapid/Garde in my collection too. Remember it being fast as my aunt had one in the 80’s. Same year as mine. She bought it when I was 4 years old. Remember that day very well. Went with her to the dealer when it was ready to pick it up. She was more on the fast lane on the highway then my dad with his 120L. After she sold it, a young boy drove it and it was unfortunately soon over with the Rapid. I’ll treat mine with respect. Want this car to last. Can’t wait to mount my new taillights and bumper 🥰 that must look awesome. All they way to it’s original glory.

Na de MB kwam er een 120 LS die de eerste strenge winter in 84 heel wat meer moeite had om aan te slaan. I have a Garde on my bucket list, but not sure if i'm ever getting one with where the market is heading, and that is for the better. They are getting appretiated international, and not only in CZ. The Gardes are much more elegant than the Rapids I'd say.

What a stunning car! I like all versions of this car 105, 120, Rapid etc., but the earlier front wings, with less wheel arch flare, match the rear arches better on the Rapid, as the car didn't receive the flared rear arches all the saloons gained for the facelift.
I think you made some sensible decisions for replacing things like the alternator and starter motor. When I first got my 120L on the road, quite a few years ago now, the alternator seized on its first long journey...
I wish you all the best with this car, and I'll look forward to future videos. Gordon :-)

Hello Gordon, thank you for your enthusiastic reaction! Do you still have your 120? I thought better do it good, want it to become a reliable car. I agree the lines of this first type Rapid are very well designed. Lots more to come, so stay tuned. Next time I’ll be working in the front breaks and need to replace the rubber covers from the ball joints. Then it needs to go for MOT. After the MOT it’s just all fun, like new rear taillights, bumper and lots of polishing etc. Greetings from Holland!

@@MrSkoda105s Yes, my 120L is resting in the garage, waiting for a bit of welding. For my sins I also have the 136 Rapid and 120LSE Super Estelle. The Rapid I've had since 1995 but was taken off the road by a Fiat... The Super Estelle came into my care when it's 2CV enthusiast owner couldn't get the cooling system working (despite advise, he was trying to run the car with only water in the system). All are in need of work, but I've been distracted by other things, such as house DIY and kids! Hopefully get the 120L back on the road later this year, and then get onto fixing the Rapid. Greetings again from the UK :-)

@@gord307 Wow! You have an amazing collection as well. Hope you’ll find the time to get the 120 L back on the road by the end of this year. Great joy to drive these classics. A Rapid 136 and a 120 LSE are also holy grails. Is the Rapid badly damaged? 120 LSE had a vinyl roof? Some people are so stubborn, but glad that was your chance to get your hands on this Škoda! If maintained the cooling system is very reliable. I take my Škoda’s with trailers on summer holidays into traffic jam and in the mountains and they don’t have any problems at all with cooling. There’s even no need to turn to heater on for bigger cooling circuit. Of course when it’s very very hot I’ll do this preventive 😉

    • @gord307
      @gord307 3 года назад

@@MrSkoda105s Yes, over 26-years and thousands of miles, I can confirm that these cars are a joy to drive.
The one time I did have cooling problems was when the water pump leaked at the base. Embarrassingly, while I was overtaking a car on the motorway, I saw steam erupting from the back and had to pull straight over to the side and stop! Fortunately I had some water, so once things had cooled down, could continue the journey (Much to the relief of my family!) I did have to replace the head gasket shortly after, but it was well overdue anyway.
Driving the Rapid for the first time, I remember thinking that I want to keep this car forever. I did many, many miles, and a fair bit of work to keep the car in good shape. The Rapid was, unfortunately, hit by a Fiat whilst I was driving at 60mph. I had just checked the speedo and remember feeing please at how well it was running. The Fiat had lost control while braking hard and was swerving from side to side before heading onto my side of the road. The main impact was on my driver's door. The damage continued down the side, bending the back wheel and taking the bumper cover off. I've recently stripped the car, cutting the door in half to remove it! I've found a new rear panel and door, and also some inner wheel arch panels. It isn't pretty at the moment, but I think it's very repairable, with a bit of time! I've just googled how far you travel at 60-mph each second. It's 88-feet, meaning if I'd been one-second faster the Fiat would have missed me completely, but if I'd been one-second slower it would have been a very nasty head-on crash!
The Super Estelle does have the vinyl roof. Other interesting features are the deep black bumpers, alloy wheels and sunroof. I think it was built at the very end of the type as it has the later rear lights and rapid style rear panel. The paint has gone thin, so there is a dusting of rust all over; but, for a 38-year old car, it looks pretty solid. The great news is, 'today' I have just collected a pair of new front wings for it, so I'm really very pleased!
      Apologies for waffling on...
All the best to you and your Skodas :-)
