Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser (God Save Emperor Francis) was originally written as an anthem to Francis II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and later of Austria. The lyrics were by Lorenz Leopold Haschka (1749--1827), and the melody by Joseph Haydn. It is sometimes called the "Kaiserhymne" (Emperor's Hymn). Haydn's tune has since been widely employed in other contexts: in works of classical music, in Christian hymns, in alma maters, and as the tune of the Deutschlandlied, the national anthem of Germany. - Видеоклипы
I recently visited Budapest and Vienna as an Austro-Hungarian trip. It was fantastic, both countries rich in history and culture. This song sums up my trip lol.
This was Haydn’s favourite composition that he wrote. Even in his old age, he would make an effort to play this tune on the piano. According to his servant, this was the last song Haydn ever played:
“The Kaiserhymne was still played three times a day, but on 26 May, 1809 (5 days before Haydn’s death) at half-past midday, the Kaiserhymne was played for the last time and that 3 times over, with such expression and taste that our good Papa was astonished about it himself and said he hadn't played the Kaiserhymne like that for a long time”
We can't keep letting him get away with this
UK: God save the King
France: Dieu Sauve le Roi
Austria/Hungary: Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser
The Kaiserhymne (this song) is actually more along the lines of Dad Deutschlandlied, the anthem modern Germany. A better example would be Heil Dir im Siegerkranz, the anthem of the Kaiserreich
@@theironphoenix. This song has the same melody as Das Deutschlandlied, yes, but that doesn’t mean that this anthem is exclusive to Germany, since Germany didn’t really use this anthem (again, same melody, different lyrics).
One good example would be Grand Dieu Sauve le Roi, which was originally a French hymn and later the Kingdom's Anthem. The UK later adapted and revolutionized it. The two variants contain the same melody, but have drastic differences. Here are some pieces;
Que toujours glorieux, Louis victorieux!
(May he forever be glorious, our victor Louis)
vs
Send her victorious, happy and glorious!
Venge ses ennemis, toujours soumis!
(May he see his enemies forever submit!)
vs
Long to reign over us, God save the King!
USA: My Country tis of Thee
The anthem was written for Francis II, German Emperor
Francis II was the Holy Roman Emperor and Emperor of Austria. He was never a German Emperor, and the first German Emperor anyway was Kaiser Wilhelm I in 1871, thirty-six years after Francis II died.
@@mikeor- The first German Emperor was Otto the Great in 962, over a thousand years ago
@@mikeor- It's common to call him German Emperor, because if you want to be strict with the title, he wasn't Holy Roman Emperor either, he was the Emperor of the Romans and King of Germany/King of the Romans too (these last two titles are seen as equivalents).
@@nicks5636 true, also Francis II called himself, first among the German Princes
@@mikeor- All Holy Roman Emperors also Held the title of King of Germany, along with whatever title they held in their homeland.
I always loved this anthem, its just too beautiful and majestic. May the memory of the old empire never be forgotten, being swept away out of the smoke and ruins of the great war
It's really majestic - god save our Emperor!👑🖤💛👑
i mean it's virtually the lyricless german anthem
@@CrimsrnIt was first the Imperial Hymn of Austria. After the End of the Monarchy the Germans take the Melody from Austria. It also has lyrics "Gott erhalte, Gott beschütze unsern Kaiser unser Land ..."
@@theaustrianmonarchy7040 oh, interesting
If it's Austro-Hungarian Empire the anthem should be called "Gott erhalte, Gott beschütze". The Kaiser Franz version was an anthem of Austrian Empire.
Exactly what I thought
I was recently accepted into Central European University with scholarship on a history master program for two years. Currently waiting for my residence permit in Baku. God save Kaiser Franz.
Good luck then!

Hmm yes Hungars and Turkmen are cousins but modern people of Hungary are not ethnically Hungars, they are mostly likely Illyrian or Slavic, and modern people in Turkey are ethnically Anatolian, Greek, Persians and Arabs.
@@muslimcrusader5987 Turks are not Arabs, very small amount of Turks have Arab ancestors. Unless you count Syrian refugees in witch we will never consider Turks and we hate them.
Another monarchy lost but not forgotten... Rip Habsburg monarchy 🇦🇹!
@IapetusMC A lot of people have done a lot of really bad things....
@IapetusMC A lot of bad stuff? Russia, the Ottoman Empire, Prussia, France & Britain also did a lot of bad things. The Habsburg Monarchy still did a lot of good things which still aren't forgotten.

Austria Erit in Orbe Ultima
The song that plays when I regularly mourn the death of this once glorious empire
As a German(Hanoverian) I can say that Austria should have won the German war and continued to lead Germany.
Austria should've striked Prussia in 1850, since they could barely defeat Denmark in the 1st Schleswig War. It our last chance for German unification, Russia was still our ally at that time.
@@TheAustrianAnimations87 I agree, but Austria and it's allies were keen about maintaining the law and order of the confederation. Which is a behaviour to look up too, but Prussia did not care much for it...
@@HerrKendys_Kulturkanal The German Confederation was supposed to be a defensive alliance, similar to NATO's article 5 today - if one German state was attacked, all others would be obliged to support it. Austria knew the other German states besides Prussia were too weak to defend themselves, so they became allies. In 1840 France wanted to recapture its old territories (see Rhine crises) in order support Muhammad Ali's Egypt (which was a threat to whole Europe), but backed down due possible war with all German states. (Muhammad Ali was later beaten by an European coalition.) Ironically, the only time the German Confederation fought an invading force was in 1866 against Prussia (some small German states were supportive to Prussia, but not the big ones like Bavaria & Saxony). Still, I think Austria striking at Prussia first with Russian help in 1850 would be the only way to win that rivalry in Austria's favor. After the Crimean War, it was too late. Austria was too weak and Prussia was reforming its army.
The music is now used by the German anthem.
After the death of the Emperor Franz Joseph during WW1, the downfall of the Empire and of the dynasty, two years later, and the birth of a new Austrian Republic which was not interested in keeping and protecting this monarchic anthem, it remained practically without any owner.
Such condition was favourable for German nationalism, which "stole" the music and adapted it (but such an operarion had been unofficially in use also before) to a prevoius nationalist poetry ("Das Lied der Deutschen").
The beauty of the music is due to the fact that it was composed (before the birth of the Emperor Franz Joseph: the words in his honour came after some decades) by the great F.J. Haydn in 1797.

I must say, as a Serb, that I am really sorry that this beautiful country disappeared. 🇦🇹🇭🇺
I had always wondered if the Habsburg Monarchy could've survived by uniting Germany and seperating its non-German parts (still under Austrian influence however). Austria should've attacked Prussia in 1850, which struggled to defeat Denmark, along with full Russian help. This was Austria's last chance to unify Germany under the Habsburger.
It would be great to have the Danubian Federation🖤💛
I’m the tree comment Nice Music too
The title is wrong, no?
Would it not be from 1867-1916 instead of 1867-1918 because bl. Karl I. became King and Emperor and he wouldn't be refered to as Franz?
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser was NOT the anthem of Austria-Hungary. It was the anthem of the Holy Roman Empire, and later, the Austrian Empire. The anthem of Austria-Hungary was Gott erhalte, Gott beschutze, which is a completely different song. The only thing it shares with Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser is the melody, nothing more. The words don't even reference Francis II, for whom Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser was written. Francis II was dead for over thirty years when the Austro-Hungarian Empire was formed in 1867. They reference Franz Joseph and his family, with Franz Joseph being a completely different person to Francis II and that's not even mentioning the fact that they only do so in the fifth verse of the song. And no, there aren't five verses. There are six of them. Please stop spreading the false rumor that Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser was the anthem of Austria-Hungary. It was NOT.
Does anyone know the name of the image of the woman holding the flag? Can we find the image on the internet? Thanks in advance

1797 original version
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Lange lebe Franz, der Kaiser,
In des Glückes hellstem Glanz!
Ihm erblühen Lorbeerreiser,
Wo er geht, zum Ehrenkranz!
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Laß von seiner Fahne Spitzen
Strahlen Sieg und Fruchtbarkeit!
Laß in seinem Rate Sitzen
Weisheit, Klugheit, Redlichkeit;
Und mit Seiner Hoheit Blitzen
Schalten nur Gerechtigkeit!
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Ströme deiner Gaben Fülle
Über ihn, sein Haus und Reich!
Brich der Bosheit Macht, enthülle
Jeden Schelm- und Bubenstreich!
Dein Gesetz sei stets sein Wille,
Dieser uns Gesetzen gleich.
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Froh erleb' er seiner Lande,
Seiner Völker höchsten Flor!
Seh' sie, Eins durch Bruderbande,
Ragen allen andern vor!
Und vernehm' noch an dem Rande
Später Gruft der Enkel Chor.
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
1826 version
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz,
Hoch als Herrscher, hoch als Weiser,
Steht er in des Ruhmes Glanz;
Liebe windet Lorbeerreiser
Ihm zum ewig grünen Kranz.
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Über blühende Gefilde
Reicht sein Zepter weit und breit;
Säulen seines Throns sind milde,
Biedersinn und Redlichkeit,
Und von seinem Wappenschilde
Strahlet die Gerechtigkeit.
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Sich mit Tugenden zu schmücken,
Achtet er der Sorgen werth,
Nicht um Völker zu erdrücken
Flammt in seiner Hand das Schwert:
Sie zu segnen, zu beglücken,
Ist der Preis, den er begehrt,
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Er zerbrach der Knechtschaft Bande,
Hob zur Freiheit uns empor!
Früh' erleb' er deutscher Lande,
Deutscher Völker höchsten Flor,
Und vernehme noch am Rande
Später Gruft der Enkel Chor:
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!

И богатство здесь растёт;

So Emperor Francis the First was not Emperor of the Österreich-Ungarische Monarchie he was the Emperor of the Kaiserthum Oesterreich, in English Austria Empire! Francis Josef named this State in to Austria-Hungary
Franz Joseph I. was first also Emperor of the Austrian Empire but in 1867 he formed it into the Austro-Hungarian Empire because the Hungarians wanted more autonomy.
