    My wife began refurbishing furniture that has turned into a business for us. Your pieces come out nice. She is involved in a circle of folks that have turned this type of work into a business as well. I get involved in the building/reconstruction/repair aspect of the process. If I may humbly suggest some things that you may have already considered, or not. First - when you make the bases with your legs (which look great!), you may want to consider a corner brace behind each leg for strength when the furniture is slid across the floor. Secondly - when you remove the base around a triple dresser (wider dresser) it may be left with structural issues that will arise over time. The base that touches the ground and likely has added tabs creates support for the entire piece. It will be necessary to add a center leg for support. this can be done by adding the leg to the front or back of your base. You can also purchase an independent one that comes with a plate that will allow easy attachment. Without it there may be and likely will be eventual door and drawer performance issues that will occur over time. Just some food for thought. Congratulations on the success of your business.

      I always see pple rip bases off old dressers and slap on a new base but often think there is gonna be structural issues. What if the legs fail? Accidents waiting to happen.
      Better to buy Legs with braces.

    I’ve honestly never requested anything from any content creator besides reaching out about this base. You guys came through like the champs you are. It’s a risk ‘revealing your secrets’ but I get the feeling it’s not about cutting out the competition for you guys. 🙂
    Consistently impressed with you both.
    Side note - I loved the fact that you guys kept the clips of your son in there. It adds a level of realness and authenticity to your channel. My son is constantly running up to hug my legs as I’m cooking so I completely relate.
    Thanks again!

    Also, I know you said you use 2x2's for your legs, but when measuring your side boards, you say they are 1 1/2 so deducting 3 inches from the measurement of dresser for the side slat base.. so are you trimming down your 2x2's at some point??

    • @DS-hq1um
      @DS-hq1um 3 года назад +2

      2"x2" is the listed size at the hardware store. If you actually measure them, they are 1.5"x1.5". They are not cut later. Similarly, a 1"x3" isn't actually 1"x3". It's 3/4"x2.5"

    I really like this base and want to make one. I had to remove the whole base and there is not much left to screw the new base to. Can you recommend a solution to ensure the base it attached securely? Should I add a sheet of wood to the bottom or something similar? Thanks

  • @carladowell5475
    @carladowell5475 3 года назад +1

    I love your work. Every piece is a work of art. I want to add your base to the top of a china cabinet. I already sold the lower portion as a buffet. Because I need to elevate it a little higher I want to use legs about 18" tall. Do you think this will work at the higher height? I thought I would try it out, and it it feels wobbly, I could add cross pieces on the side and connect those with a long piece in the middle, so it looks like a capital letter I. I am planning to add a long piece in the back as well so my frame looks like a box with four legs. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!

    • @diywife
      @diywife  3 года назад +1

      Thanks! I actually did that exact thing and we have a video showing it! Definitely use a wood glue, and I would probably mount it to the wall just for safety. It would look good with the long pieces connected the legs lower down too!

    • @carladowell5475
      @carladowell5475 3 года назад

      @@diywife awesome! I’ll check it out. I am using a 1x6 and I decided to make the legs 12” instead of 18”. I feel a little better about it. Unfortunately, I cut my back 1x6 about a 1/4”” too short.😢😱😭 So I’m debating if I can make it work with a 3 sided base or spend another $18 for a new board. Measure 6 times, cut once.🤪

    Is anyone else trying furniture flipping and not getting much traction? I'm using Facebook marketplace, craigslist and Offerup. So far I've purchased 6 items, posted 5, and only have sold 2. I've officially been doing this for a week. Am I expecting too much too fast? It seems like others on youtube get most sales within a day or 2... hmm

    • @diywife
      @diywife  3 года назад +1

      I think selling 2 within a week is awesome!! Maybe I need to communicate that better here, I don't sell most of mine within a couple of days. Sometimes it's unpredictable and I'm surprised when one sells right away (right buyer right time I think) and other times I'll have one sit for weeks, even after lowering the price. Hang in there, you'll get a better feel for your market with time!

    I totally agree adding the bases to your furniture is one thing that helps the piece sell so well. It takes your redo to "another level". It truly turns a nice dresser into a "high end" work of art. So pun intended there's 2 names for you. Andrea's another level base or Andrea's high end foundation. No matter what name you decide to give it just know they look fabulous. Maybe Andrea's fabulous foundation. Ha ha I am going to stop now.

Do you have any tips/tricks for keeping the legs and boards straight and where you want them while you are drilling in the screws? Mine kept squirming around on me and didn't always end up straight or where I wanted them exactly. I really love this base and I plan to use it more, but I need to figure out this little issue. Thanks for another great video!!

      Oh way to go!! I just hold them as tightly together as I can, and I also know that when the screws are tightened they pull the wood slightly to one side so I mentally account for that. If I mess up I take that screw out and do the one next to it instead then redo the other. Practice really does help though!

    Hi Andrea is there any chance of you putting the base-making instructions in writing as you have done for the painting process?
    I need to convert all of your instructions to metric & it would be helpful to have written instructions as a starting point
    Thank you & keep up the fantastic work

    Hi you guys!! I absolutely love your videos and really enjoy watching and learning from you. I was wondering if there is another type of wood you can recommend for the base other than red oak? For some reason I have a hard time finding that in my area. Also, I checked out your new etsy store and saw that the dresser already sold!! Congratulations!!! I have other etsy shops and thought about opening one for furniture as well. Would you mind sharing your experience shipping the piece? Did you use a moving company?

    Awesome! What I think is missing from these furniture flip videos is the concept sketch on paper. Sketch it on paper first and let that be a roadmap for your project. Glad for you that you can make money doing what you love. I for one am searching for that very thing.

    When making your base, do you do all 4 sides, or just 3 sided??

    These dressers are all beautiful. Thanks to you, and all the other brave DIY-ers out there, not only are these beauties getting to become a future heirloom for a whole new generation to love, but they are kept from becoming more landfill waste.

    I really enjoy your videos and have been watching so many FF videos lately because I want to start to flip. This base style is absolutely beautiful and totally "Elevates" all pieces. I watched the video a few times, but maybe because I haven't worked with these tools, I have a harder time understanding exactly what is being done. Perhaps you can compile a pdf with line drawings and measurements so I can understand better. I understand that the actual Lengths and Widths are to be determined by the dimensions of the piece, but for example the base being 1/4" less than the piece is that on each side or in total so 1/8" on each side? I just know for me seeing line drawings and diagrams help me understand better and I know you have other PDF's out there. Thanks again for such great videos.

      I agree. I am so afraid to attempt this. But I am the only one holding me back I know but I am a planner and need to see it laid out as well

    Does anyone know why a back piece is not necessary for these dressers? I just assumed there would be a 1x3 going the length of all 4 sides, but I suppose the front and side pieces are sufficient? (PS. Love this tutorial and love DIY Wife - we've been following for years!)

    Hi Andrea love all your work, I am trying to build a base but am terrified as have never used power tools before 😮 just a question please- you said to make front & side bases 1/4” smaller then actual. But then you said to cut 3” from bases to account for the width of the leg. What I don’t understand is why 1/4 “ & not just 3” ? Thanx

    Ok so im super new at this woodworking and flipping. You said you take off 1.25 inch of the whole measurement, right? and then 3 inches off ( cause the legs are two in front two on the back so 3 inches on the side boards and the front boards? also the angle was? Lovely tutorial im just slow brainstorming
