Great Video !! Great Mighty Powered Steam!! I rode over 200,000 miles on the rails with all these !! East coast Seaboard airline Railroad, Atlantic coast Line, Amtrak, Denver & Rio Grande, Hobo RR, Chicagp "L" and all the Subways and elevateds! NYC and Chicago
Spectacular video! Went there for the firt time back in June for a photo special that covered the whole line. I was VERY impressed by the railroad. Love the 40! Again, GREAT video!
This is a very nice video....I especially like the old Pullman cars. There is something about them that evokes such nostalgia to those of us who love trains. And, of course, that 'lonesome' whistle. Thank you for making and posting the video. Please do more!
Fun fact, sliced bread is usually sold as a Pullman loaf (perfectly square slices without a dome) because the Pullman Company invented special baking pans that baked perfectly squared loaves that stacked easier and took up less space in the often cramped kitchen cars.
I remember visiting the Connecticut Valley Railroad back in like 2007 or 2008 (I don't remember the year), when I was like 5. I went back there in 2018 with my Dad. Both times the train was pulled by #40.
@ooGAMINGoo You may have been seeing the first return trip of the day from Deep River to Essex. At that point, the vast majority of people generally will have gotten off the train at Deep River to catch the riverboat, leaving few people on the train.
Penn Rail, this video and it's content is super quality and the locomotive pulling eight passenger cars unassisted is uncommon...thank and warm greeting from N-E PA, USA!
This railroad has lots of grade crossings, the one at Jim Thorpe, PA on the Lehigh Gorge route along the river has none, except the one at the Jim Thorpe Station on to the parking lot. Next crossing north is at Tannery, PA 23 miles north. I like tourist trains with lots of grade crossings to whistle at.
I drive truck, and I had to go to Essex, or near there to load with nursery stock, I jumped off the highway, and there she sat, #40. I pulled into the coal yard with the truck and grabbed my 35mm and took some pictures. She sure looked majestic sitting there on her siding.
wow 8 cars just like Strasburg. that unit probably has close to the Tractive effort of 475s 41000 lbs. It`s a nice matching train even though some cars have enclosed platforms and some have extended roofs at least it`s all heavyweights in the same color scheme.
That locomotive was taken out of service and rebuilt. In 2012, she was rebuilt and is currently the "main" engine. She is painted to look like a New Haven Mikado. You can see her in action in one of my videos...
20 MPH per FRA for historic equipment. Track is FRA Class 2, good for 30 but signaled for 20. I take care of the track (using my daughter's youtube account!)
@CSX6000 Is the Crosby 3 Chime on #40 the same kind of whistle that those logging engines in West Virginia use? Cause it sounds awfully familiar to those old shays and climaxes in the WV area.
Wow impressive series of clips! Love your shooting you get some great shots my friend! Are you a professional photographer? Anyways, that engine is amazing. Mikados have a nice appeal to them! Love that 3 chime whistle! Sounds very close to a Pennsy 3 chime. thanks for posting!
Come ride the Essex steam train and catch a pretty sight. The changing of the seasons the story eagles flight. The conneticut river valley river valley.
Which tourist railroad do you like better? Strasburg, New Hope, Black River, Bel-Del, Wilmington & Western, Lehigh Gorge/R&N, Steamtown, or this, Valley RR?
Does the regular steam train ride go further now? Because it shows the train going past the Hadlyme "flag stop" shelter, then stopping along the river and backing up. Will the active railroad ever be extended farther north than Haddam/Goodspeed station? There is a big problem with a boat marina in the way north of there. If I ever get to Connecticut I would like to ride this. I've been on lots of train rides in PA, NJ, and DE. I live 90 miles west of NYC in PA. I rode behind NYSW 142 in NJ.
Great video Adam! I'm going up to Essex this Wednesday and I was wondering were are some good spots to get some shots of the train and how do you get to them?
In response to rwk360, in regards is the line extending any further north than Haddam/Goodspeed - the line is serviceable 1 mile north of Route 82/Bridge Road, to a point about 150' south of the mentioned marina, with the last 350' only just being re-opened in March 2016.. Even though the railroad property is contiguous through the marina, we are working very closely with the marina in order to be good neighbors and minimize impact on their successful business. The track will re-open through the marina area this summer (2016), and the new Haddam Special Foliage Trains will go at least up to the marina, if not all the way through. To respect the marina, we have decided not to go into the marina area with trains until we have enough track open on the north side to be able to pass completely through the marina (i.e. not stop right in the middle).
The small station that says Chester is the location used for scene where the steam engine was confiscated and filled with coal for the Doris Day/Jack Lemmon movie, "It happened to Jane". Other shots were taken along the Conn river line and at the Diamond in Plainfield CT. The last New Haven Steam engine stared in that film along with New haven Diesels. renamed for the movie as Eastern and Portland RR
The "Chinese Steamer" is in service at the CT Valley Railroad. You just may not recognize it because they lettered it number 3025 for the New Haven Railroad. Search "Essex Steam Train 3025." Hope this helped.
tachikoma747 The 142 works on the Bel-Del line in Philipsburg, NJ. They traded it for a 2-8-0 #97, which looks just like #40. 142s sister Chinese locomotive now works at Essex though, as New Haven 3025.
Nice photo work. Keep in mind that it is the locomotive that should be the star attraction. Little sense if pictures of rail cars. You do not follow the locomotive at all. There is more time on empty tracks and passing cars than the rare operating locomotive. What is the focus of attention.
Some of us who appreciate the old steam era railroading do not want to see only the locomotive or even mostly just the locomotive. We appreciate it all as a whole and want to be able to see everything that makes up the experience. That includes empty track and endless strings of railcars.
Well.....some of us, many of us, enjoy seeing the old Pullmans, etc. Why would you criticize someone who made a nice gesture and took the time to post their video? There's tons of videos on this site that focus on the locomotives...why do you go watch those instead of telling Penn Rails how to make a video.
Thanks for just the natural sounds of the train, the steam engine. No more banjo music!
My oldest son (four years old) is delighted with these trains. Thanks for the video! It's the perfect sedative. Greetings from Spain.
Your son is 15 and he is still watching trains?
@@marleyrios1573 Yeah
It's even pulling Pullman carriages! Fantastic!

I'm glad to see my local railroad getting all this attention.
Mine is Strausburg railroad we get attention to
Great reminder from 10 years ago when i went and there was a steam engine in that siding. Thanks for the great video!

Wow! One of the best steam videos on youtube. Very clear pictures. Makes me want to go cross-country to Connecticut to ride this!
Spectacular video! Went there for the firt time back in June for a photo special that covered the whole line. I was VERY impressed by the railroad. Love the 40! Again, GREAT video!
No idea why there is over half the dislikes as there are like, this was great filming! The shots from the caboose were perfect!
Idfk
Maybe they think 40 is getting too much attention?
This is a very nice video....I especially like the old Pullman cars. There is something about them that evokes such nostalgia to those of us who love trains. And, of course, that 'lonesome' whistle. Thank you for making and posting the video. Please do more!
Fun fact, sliced bread is usually sold as a Pullman loaf (perfectly square slices without a dome) because the Pullman Company invented special baking pans that baked perfectly squared loaves that stacked easier and took up less space in the often cramped kitchen cars.
So this is the train from that one stock image... cool

Awesome video of an Awesome Train! Thanks for sharing.
I'm painting this exact locomotive for my painting class! Thanks for having this up, now I can listen to it while I paint it! :D
GeeZ! I think I want to visit there! Great rolling meet at DR.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but, steam locomotives drives me batty! I love 'em!!! ❤️ 😍 ❤️

A tip : watch series at kaldrostream. Been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Kristopher Andres Yup, I've been watching on Flixzone} for since december myself :)
We just need a full length video like this with the 3025 this year! :)
@trainmanben1 No. #40 is wearing a Crosby 3 chime. #97 is in for it's rebuild at the end of the month.
great video!! i hope to get up there one day...

Engineer Jim, at his best on that whistle!
I went to that EXACT place yesterday
@Y:
Grew up in Deep River - that whistle is unmistakable! You can hear it all along the river on summer days. Great video, thanks for posting.
That whistle sounds like Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad #5 or Pennsylvania Railroad #1361.

No, 40 was built by ALCO in 1920. You are thinking about 3025, rebuilt by Valley RR to recreate a class of New Haven Locomotive.
It's just south of Essex.
I worked on it back in the 80's as a Trainman. That was when engine 97 was in service. A great place to visit.
no its a standard Baldwin whistle just like Tweetsie #192
Looks like a long ride. How many miles is that line

Just to clarify, that's a Crosby 3 chime right?
I love these train videos, but I can't help being reminded of Rick & Morty every time I hear the intro music.

I miss steam trains
First heard of this after seeing it in one of mark one videos filmes
I went on this railroad YEARS ago when they had that brand new Chinese steamer. What ever happened to that locomotive?
The "Chinese Steamer" is in service at the CT Valley Railroad. You just may not recognize it because they lettered it number 3025 for the New Haven Railroad. Search "Essex Steam Train 3025." Hope this helped.
Whatever happened to that brand new Chinese locomotive that they had way back in the early 1990s?
From what I heard they traded it for a burnt out 2-8-0 that they have now restored.

It looks nothing like 2010!
Strasburg 475 has a mini-me!
If you wish to see the destruction of this engine then you're not welcome here.

skyraiderjet ?
When 97 returns to service can you do a video called
The Valley Railroad: 2-8-0 97 Returns
.
@imagreatbigman People got off the train in Deep River to take the boat ride.
What's the top speed on that line?
That must be a different engine near the end because the cab is in the front.
Andy Ballard It actually isn't because I go there every year and the train usually has its tender forward on the journey back.
