Hi Tom! We still have the short box Toyota! Hopefully a new battery pack will be showing up soon. This car (Shock and Awe) is from the North Shore Automotive program in Bothell Washington. It's not part of our team but it's unique in the electric racing world. I was helping out take some video to record their record setting day! :)
Everybody is talking about the lack of sound and how that ruins it for them. So let me get this straight, you see a new kind of car that is 1. Faster 2. Safer for everything 3. Imo sound cooler and you dismiss it because it doesn’t sound like a v8, the thing about EVs is all you gotta do is give the motor more electricity and you’re moving at the speed of sound, you’ll see
What the hell was that? It was as exciting as watching the grass grow...yawn! Where is the fire, the thunderous noise, the shaking of the ground? I know some people are convinced that electric is the way to go but I disagree. How is that electricity produced? Most likely from a coal-fired electric plant. If not coal-fired then natural gas. How do they dispose of all the toxins in the massive amount of batteries? The rare earth's needed to produce these lithium batteries, require massive amounts of dirt to be moved at what cost to the environment? Taking everything into consideration I propose to you that oil-based products are the way to go and will continue to be so into the foreseeable future. Save the electric motors for old men & women's wheelchairs!
That's too bad Steve. You're living in the past. This was one of the first runs out and they were still tuning the vehicle. As for electricity, we're on the west coast, all clean hydro power. Batteries are mostly copper and aluminum. Easily recyclable. I will admit the lithium paste is the issue currently that they are working on reusing. Closed loop product. You can either come on into the future or continue to live on dinosaur juice that will be exhausted at some point. Change is inevitable. :)
@@caseymynott maybe, I am living in the past. I was watching a show on new lithium batteries that would your project. I am 58 and would greatly miss the smell of Nitro as it stings your eyes. The shaking of the ground, the flames coming out the exhaust. Drag racing used to fill the stands when cars were running 240 MPH in the 1/4 when I was young(er) LOL. Now they go way past 300. How much faster can they go? What if they combined electric motors for launch taking advantage of the absolute torque. Then at some point the big cubic inch top fuel motors kick in. By the way, "YES" here in the Pacific Northwest we get our power from Hydroelectric BUT Google this: Show Map of where US gets electric power." You will see the vast majority is Coal feed electric plants in the East and if not coal fed than it is Natural Gas with some Nuclear. In fact, only three states get power from hydroelectric Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. We sell our surplus power to California and Nevada especially...those lights are not supplied by the dam on lake mead. In fact, thats the peoblem with hydro. Here is Washington the environmentalist are blowing up dams left and right to bring back the salmon (which is working buy the way).
The whole thing about dragracing is the sound of raw power when you buy a luxury car you buy it for nice and quiet and smooth when you buy a hellcat or a Corvette you buy it for sound looks it just sounds mean when you run those cars this was a joke I have a Moped that sounds better than that on take off I got to go throw up
Thomas Sutherland - Definitely not. This car's chassis will easily hook without AWD which would ruin it AND slow it down. This was an early development pass. Many bugs for them to still work out. What it needed is much higher motor torque to fully transfer the weight to the rear and hold it there as well as have a much greater trap speed, then it would probably run high 8s or low 9s. 14x32 and 15x33 slicks require high, fairly even amounts of torque to work properly, otherwise you see the car hop as in this video. Give 'em time.
I know it doesn’t sound as cool as a gas car with a gas engine, but if we can research how to make more effective batteries without cobalt than electric cars will be a way we can race far into the future without killing the planet. We can still have cool cars we just have to realize we might have to give up the “VROOOOOOOOOM” which is sad and all but like, at least my great great grandkids will still be able to race around and breathe at the same time
Access to Big Daddy Don Garlitts, it costs $50 to $60 grand for each run with Top Fuel. This helps make it affordable again for a guy to build something really fast in his garage.
@Jeff Glines My point son is that even Don Garlits sees EV's as the future. He was a visionary when ICE powered cars were the future. He was part of the crowd that first got a small block powerplant to pull the front wheels off the ground. He's still a visionary and he sees EV's as the future. I agree with him. Guys can build EV's right now that can break 10 seconds in the quarter for less than it costs to make just 1 run in a top fuel dragster. Maybe $60K isn't a lot of money to you, but I work for a living. Don Garlits may be an old man, but he has a young and practical mind. You might be young, but son, you're an old man on the inside.
@Jeff Glines Like I said, you're old. Top fuel's days are limited. It's just too fucking expensive to make a run. And It's not going to get any cheaper. And on top of that, due to the terrorist fear/ threat, the fuel hard to obtain. It's attitudes like yours that for sure will kill the sport. Don't shoot the messenger. I am telling you the truth.
@Jeff Glines Been to BIR. Used to go to Minnesota and Twin Cities Dragways. 1970's But if you think humans are going to cease being interested in racing machines just because they don't make a shit ton of noise anymore, I think you're nuts. But sadly, drag racing may die as ICE powered vehicles days are numbered. And the noise, even though it just represents wasted energy. Is part of the experience. You and I can argue this point, but in 10 years time, EV's will be as common as ICE powered vehicles. In 20 years, ICE's will be antiques. Encircling the Twin Cities today, there are at least 40 solar farms and that number continues to grow. I work on them, whether I want to or not. Point being, electric utilities are anticipating needing to charge more and more EV's. The huge advantage of having solar farms in and around metropolitan areas is that they reduce line loss due to simply being located close to the end user. Volvo has already announced the end of ICE's in their vehicles soon. Since racing has always been a way for manufacturers to get the public interested in their vehicles. I can't see racing end. Anyway, as I said, a backyard mechanic can now build a faster machine powered by electric motors than ICEs for the same money. Maybe a little more, maybe a little less. It's just different, that's all. I will pay to see what these kids do. I don't care for all that fucking noise anymore. Maybe you still have a garage full of small block chevys and don't want to see people lose interest in what you can build? I gave all that up. I get my fill of turning tools at work. But more power to guys still into ICEs. I like EV's. The tech will have improved and the cold weather won't be as much of a factor when I buy my new Tesla in 7 years. Maybe I'll bring it to BIR, if they're still open. That's another story. All we can do is hope.
@Jeff Glines Just because kids don't like to wrench on cars doesn't alone, "make them lazy". As long as they have other skills and interests. Of course, besides partying. My kids aren't the least bit interested in cars. They have other skills. They make more $ than I do. If you're going to maintain that EV's are just a joke, you're not going to like things very well in just a few years. It ain't 1971 anymore. I think we've talked this thing to death. You can have the last word. I mean no disrespect, but I actually feel sorry for you and everyone else stuck in the past. As far as windmills go, I don't know, but you hear a lot of shit from a lot of people. Coal people hate windmills. Always follow the money. You can't believe everything you hear. Even if the guy telling you something thinks he's in on a secret.
Mark Garraway - Most likely this car was purchased used and ran 150+ mph with a conventional engine. With the proper motors and controllers, this car should easily exceed 150 mph.
According to Garlits, who's pushing the envelope, the motors can't handle the RPM's yet, (they throw the solder off the armature/rotor), and the battery controllers, so you are spot on. Another few years of serious R&D, and eDrag Cars will have the same problem the pro cars are having: some much acceleration, and speed, one mistake, one wrong bounce, or flaw in the track, and... airborne. That seems to be the limiting factor, right now.

Believe it or not, I actually agree with you. The gasoline race vehicle is going to be around for a long, long time. Because it's what people are used to and understand. However, when you get behind the seat of an instant torque monster like Shock and Awe, all you feel is insane earth-shattering torque trying to push your brain out through your ears as you see stars!.....People want action, we agree. Listen people who think electric Motorsports will take off you're wrong what income keeps any track open is how many seats are full how much food and drinks are bought I grew up at the dirt track building 358 and 360 and nothing sounds better than that starting up on alky and hearing the cam lope under the sheet metal and those tight revs due to the light rotating assembly and direct drive combination and I tell you as soon as I go to a dirt track to race or watch and the damn cars sound like a child's wind up toy I'm washing my hands of the sport because sound is a good 75 to 80% of the reasons fans watch racing if you don't believe me go to any dirt track or drag strip and ask numerous amounts of people why they love it so when the cars start sounding like somebody farting underwater track attendance will go down thus causing tracks to shut down because nobody wants to pay 30$ for their family to go to a race and sit in silence I'm not in denial I'm just saying technology evolves we can't stop that and sometimes things can't evolve along with it it's sad but true
Just because electrics have much less sound, doesn't mean it won't make for an exciting spectator sport.... As soon as the burnout takes place in drag racing an electric, people take notice. Because of the lack of sound. And believe it or not, people are excited about that. I get what you're saying but all we know is obnoxious dinosaur juice noise. As motor sports evolve people will still be excited to see those neat creations hitting the track..... Of course we can't see how that's possible, motorsports with much less noise. It's a reality we know nothing about.... 😁
@@caseymynott you will notice when people won't watch it....we have some electric dragsters in Europe and everyone leaves the strip to get food and beer when they race.
@@wolfgangbarrio5043 It's funny. When I am at the track, people watch the electric because it's unique. They literally stop and pay attention. The NHRA is moving in the electric direction. So, will people watch? The NHRA seems to think so... 🤔😁
@@caseymynott They have no choice. Right now, its something different and new. That novelty, that 'uniqueness' wouldn't last if there would only be electric drag racing obviously.
An electric drag class is okay, like we do it here. But since no one watches that one electric class, it tells you a lot lol.

I certainly recognize Mission Raceway, never seen that car though, is DSS Delta Senior Secondary? They had an electric pickup last time I saw.
Imo sound cooler and you dismiss it because it doesn’t sound like a v8, the thing about EVs is all you gotta do is give the motor more electricity and you’re moving at the speed of sound, you’ll see
Why does this car have wheelie bars and parachute? Those things are only needed if you drive in a fast car.
Now you got a street legal car it doesn't make no sound 😁
Nhra is looking at electric racing. There also going to be looking at empty grand stands!!!!!! What a joke. My ej1 honda runs 9.9
The shock and awe is how annoying this video is....
Super Ghey. Need to not give into the electric movement. Need to band up and resist.
looked like traction control kicking in
Need to adjust that for link
The whole thing about dragracing is the sound of raw power when you buy a luxury car you buy it for nice and quiet and smooth when you buy a hellcat or a Corvette you buy it for sound looks it just sounds mean when you run those cars this was a joke I have a Moped that sounds better than that on take off I got to go throw up
When you drive a 1000hp electric on the track, let us know. You'll change your mind! 😊
Would adding a turbo help?
Peak internet is not immediately knowing if this is satire
Underwhelming, but I did like how quiet it was.😂
Needs all wheel drive
Thomas Sutherland - Definitely not. This car's chassis will easily hook without AWD which would ruin it AND slow it down. This was an early development pass. Many bugs for them to still work out. What it needed is much higher motor torque to fully transfer the weight to the rear and hold it there as well as have a much greater trap speed, then it would probably run high 8s or low 9s. 14x32 and 15x33 slicks require high, fairly even amounts of torque to work properly, otherwise you see the car hop as in this video. Give 'em time.
Best part of video = "great burnout ....great burnout"
Turble

@Jeff Glines Obviously you have never built a car.
@Jeff Glines Like I said, you're old.
@Jeff Glines Been to BIR.
Used to go to Minnesota and Twin Cities Dragways. 1970's
But if you think humans are going to cease being interested in racing machines just because they don't make a shit ton of noise anymore, I think you're nuts.
Even if the guy telling you something thinks he's in on a secret.
nice
Micheal Yarbrough I
Why the parachute? LMAO!
Mark Garraway hahahahahah
Looks only. If it don't go give it the look
Maybe there's a cliff at the end of the strip?
Junk
Put a sling shot rubber band might do better
maybe the could wind up some rubber bands as a supercharger and use a squirrel in a running wheel to really make it go?
Sorry, if you think this is drag racing of the future you are going to be sadly disappointed. I mean....zzzzzzzzzzzzz
These will end up breaking all liquid fuel records.
