oops I did the same thing to my grant stone brass, had a sizable scratch on the toe where the color 8 dye came off, got angelus burgundy dye and applied it and it went on almost black, tried acetone to remove it and it looked burnt. Ended up bringing to a cobbler where he sprayed it over and I managed to buff that all off with routine cleaning. Ended up just shining the shit out of the toecaps and even though one side looks a bit dark it looks like its been used rather than abused and I'm pretty happy with them
Awesome. I think this is a great example of seeing things through. You were more patient than I…glad it worked out! Cool to know your boots are unique to you.
That’s a shame to lose the natural dublin color, although they turned out nice. Live and learn I guess. I have a pair in f Nicks in natural dublin with cap toe and it’s probably my favorite leather.
Yeah I definitely lived and learned on this one lol. I like Dublin a lot as well - nice change from chromexcel. I don’t own a pair of Nicks, but I’d definitely like a pair one day. I have weird feet and I’m particular about sizing, so I’m hesitant to get a pair of PNW boots because of that. Probably a bit irrational tbh

Good end result! Are they going to tea-core patina into burgundy and orange-brown? I’ve got the same clown shoe issue on my OSB natty cxl trench boots. My approach has just been to use more conditioner on the vamp behind the toe cap. It’s worked somewhat but not fully. What’s the best option? 🤷🏽♂️
That sucks. To be totally honest, I thought wearing mine a lot would help with the discoloration, but it didn’t. I tried the conditioner thing you mentioned as well. Unfortunately I don’t have a good fix other than dying them lol. There are some larger OSB QC issues that float around in my mind. Maybe I’ll make a video on that one day.
Dying them black was a good solution to the problem, well done. Down the road when you have the next new pair of boots, I'd recommend you just use some Obenauf's LP conditioner if you're looking to darken the boots a bit or add "instant patina".
Awesome. Which pairs do you have? I have a pair of 8085s and they’re my favorite boots. I plan on getting another pair - probably some muleskinners. I plan on posting some IR vids in the future too, so stay tuned!
While I wasn't as unfortunate as you were with my Oak Street boots mine look dry to my out of the box and I'm reluctant to condition them feeling that such a reputable brand wouldn't send them out too dry. After seeing the mismatched leather on yours makes me feel like conditioning them won't be as invasive as dying them red😁. You're eventual Black solution worked well though.
This is what I learned the first time I dyed boots. Get some rubbing alcohol to dilute your dye with. Multiple layers of thinned dye is easier to control than a thick slab of dye.
I understand the dye I used is already cut with alcohol so it went on thin and the liquid evaporated quickly. I think I just had too much dye in the dobber to begin with. Now I know for next time!
@@LikewiseAmericana that was exactly my reaction when my first dye job I also turned my boot black in the end (albeit with a really hard to notice green tint under the right lighting). I realized something must be wrong with my technique and spent the time watching some videos and streams of people who hand patina shoes and boots and was surprised at how diluted the pros were thinning their dyes to be. My second pair since (natural cxl thursday captain hand dyed to forest green) turned out a lot better.
@@cheekibreeki9155 you lived and you learned lol. Yeah the diluted dye is the way to go, though I clearly had issues controlling how much dye was on the dobber. Less is more I guess.
Yep! True to size. They’re not perfect, but they work. I’m a 10EE on the Brannock and these are a size 10. The toe box is more round/anatomical, so I think that’s why they work. If they had an almond-shaped toe, they probably would be too small.
@@LikewiseAmericana That’s good to know. I’m an 11D (almost E) and tried the size 11 in a plain toe/rubber sole, and it was enormous. Returned them for a 10.5D in a cap toe/leather sole, and honestly they’re a bit short/small, can only wear with thin socks and even then the fit is questionable. Even though both models are Elston last it makes me wonder if the lasts are slightly different or if they’re built in a different factory. Sucks because I like the boots/brand. Just had trouble with the sizing.
Cool video. How comfortable are these boots? I'm thinking of picking up a pair, but I'm not sure if I should go true to size or go a half size down from brannock.
They’re pretty comfortable, but I have reservations about OSB’s quality control. May do a vid on it. I think OSB recommends true to size. I’m a 10EE on Brannock and wear a 10 in both pairs I own.
Thanks! I can see what you mean about the color 8, though I’m much more pleased about the black. The Borbour jacket is their Spey model. I couldn’t find it in the States, so I bought it in Japan recently. It’s great. I’d highly recommend if you’re able to pick one up.
I think they looked alright in that color 8 color. They look good in black too. I don’t blame you for dying them I hate the toe cap being different from the vamp look. Turdsdays are pretty bad for that.
Thanks a ton! I appreciate it. I bought my Barbour during a recent trip to Japan. Couldn’t find it anywhere in the States either. But of course I saw them EVERYWHERE in Japan. You might be better off trying to get one second hand.
My goal was to keep the welts natural. I taped them off when I dyed these originally, but the dye bled through 😭 so I had to just do it all oxblood. Dyeing the welts black before dyeing the uppers black didn’t even cross my mind lol
Damn, a shame you didn't like the original leather color, that veg tanned leather is great for patina and yours were looking so awesome imo. I own a pair of OSB trench boots in natural CXL, brogue toe cap, and while I agree they look less sleek than my other boots, they are very comfortable because of the wide toe box. I feel like the toe cap kind of helps to distract from the very wide last, i have some boots in E width that aren't this wide. The look isn't for everyone, just like the Iron Ranger, but this boot has a lot going for it. I do have some issues with certain versions of their boots, using certain lower quality materials and charging a rather high price, but my personal pair doesn't share those concerns, and 99% of my conplaints can be solved when it is time to resole the boots.
Love your perspective. I have another pair of trench boots from OSB (plain toe) and the quality control is really bad. Not sure why I kept them tbh. If they were Grant Stones, they wouldn’t even be B grades. I’ve considered doing a video on OSB’s QC actually. Stay tuned.
I don’t think you ruined them with the red I think they looked great but the black does too! That toe would have annoyed me too I would have sent them back lol
Thanks a lot! A few people have said the red was better, but I’m partial to the black now. I have issues with OSB’s quality control in general and may do a video on it down the road.

@@NativeNordmann yeah the all black version is definitely very formal and I’ll admit, not the most versatile. But if I need to dress up a look, these black boots will be my first choice!
the problem is that vamp was super streched as compared to the toe cap..and because of that it looked lighter in colour.. cons of using such colours on cap toes i reckon
Maybe it’s because I wear Iron Rangers but they didn’t look like clown shoes at all. They ended up looking quite nice once dyed black, nice work.
