Oak Street Boot Makers Trench Boots Ruined…and how I “fixed” them
Просмотров 11 тыс.10 месяцев назад
In Nov 2022, I bought a pair of trench boots from Oak Street Boot Makers and I didn't like them as much as I thought I would. I decided to dye them oxblood hoping to make them better, but , of course I made it worse. In this video, I talk about what I did to ruin them, why I did it, and how I can salvage what was almost lost. Hope you enjoy the vid! Thanks for watching.
yeah i feel like there's a modern sentiment that patina = abuse and neglect. partly because people dont actually have their things for long enough and use them hard enough for them to develop real patina.
I like them.
6 month update?
I’m interested in your jacket. I suspect it’s a Barbour, but I haven’t seen that style before.
6 month update? Would love to see these with some wear. Also... if you have a low instep skinny ankle, the new 618 Last will fit you well. Give it a shot, has a lot of width up front.
These are certainly a handsome pair of boots. I’d love to see how they’re looking now.
You need two coats to really dye them!
The hard decision is getting the brass boot in that leather or the diesel boot
They no longer do wides from what I've heard.
6 month update coming up this July 2024. 🎉
Where'd you get the laces from? They look cool
Look like 8111.
Love the new look you gave these boots. I have done this in the past and the beautiful thing is, its easy to mess around with and go back to original looks.
Your philosophy is spot on. It’s a life time story, not 6 months. Looking after them and they will look after you and tell your story, witness to your life. Great job!
I have the Allen in waxed suede, it fits like a glove. Super comfy, I love 'em.
I’m a huge fan of GS too. After owning 5 pairs of GS boots, I still drool over the other GS boots I haven’t got the chance to buy. Very sickening, isn’t it?
You're doing it the right way! I'm personally more impressed with a boot cared for & aged beautifully vs. One that is clearly dry, dirty, & mistreated. You have to take care of your things! Great work, they're beautiful boots & the vid was engaging ✌🏼
Not bad. I’ve been thinking about doing the same with the Nicks I ordered. I ordered them with brown edge color in brown waxed flesh and didnt realize how dark the edge color is. I haven’t changed the order yet because I think the light natural edge color would contrast too much with the almost black BWF when they’re new.
Thanks for the videos! Can you PLEASE tell me where yo got those kilties to protect the tongue. Japan rocks!
Nice! Great review. Just picked up a pair of these instead of the Saddle tans. Looking forward to the update!
Jeans too loose. Need slim taper.
I completely agree about unlined boots. I thought I was losing it but my GS boots just didn't hold in place like my oak streets and parkhursts which are unlined
Dying them black was a good solution to the problem, well done. Down the road when you have the next new pair of boots, I'd recommend you just use some Obenauf's LP conditioner if you're looking to darken the boots a bit or add "instant patina".
Not bad at all 👍
I think you got the patina philosophy down. I personally prefer the patina of well taken care of leather. I guess it’s the “longevity look” if that makes sense. I’ve done both with leather products. While non conditioned leather goods have that certain rugged look, they won’t last that long. Then that kinda defeats the purpose of purchasing something of quality.
Spot analysis ! I’m looking for less motorcycle oriented boots than my rough out Iron Rangers and these fit the bill perfectly. Very nice video and boots of course.
looks a lot better black .
I'm picking up a pair of these in copper as well. I love the contrast of the light and dark, that natural distressed look. I was concerned about what products to use as to not darken the leather too much and mess them up. So far I'm considering bick 4 or the red wing leather lotion. Great info thanks for the vid, the boots look much better to me after the cleaning.
What happened to the dust bags?
While I wasn't as unfortunate as you were with my Oak Street boots mine look dry to my out of the box and I'm reluctant to condition them feeling that such a reputable brand wouldn't send them out too dry. After seeing the mismatched leather on yours makes me feel like conditioning them won't be as invasive as dying them red😁. You're eventual Black solution worked well though.
I got the same embroidered corduroy jacket on my trip to Japan last month as well 😂.
They certainly look better
Damn dude, that stache is so gay lol.
Nice job! They now have some character where they were pretty plain looking before.
I have the same sweaty feet problem, but switching to merino wool socks actually solved that problem.
Great review, subbed
Looks way better after. A note, the stain does come off with use too.
Love Grant Stone and their boots. Those are next on my get list. I have the Diesel in Crimson. Just love it. The diesel fits me just right. Good job, keep up the good work.
These look sharp! I like how they look after you cleaned and conditioned them. Have you considered replacing the laces with a flat wax lace? I have the 8111’s and currently have an indigo flat wax lace in them and they look amazing.
How do these compare to the Grant Stones Diesel in Crimson Chromexcel? they appear to be similar but have never owned any from either brand
Well, these aren't made in China, for one thing
@tonymoore2100 Many American brand boots are being made in Spain or Portugal or Mexico. All outside of US and meant for cost savings. Not that different. Stop peddling stereotypes.
@@ryanpiyo98 what stereotype did I peddle?
@tonymoore2100 Made in China being your main differentiator, which would suggest you think it's bad.
@@ryanpiyo98 it is 😃 grantstone boots are vastly inferior to any of the American-made boots I wear. Or Canadian. I also don't trust that they pay their workers enough.
Didn’t know Freddie Mercury did a boot cleaning video
lol touché
You f’ed up a nice pair of boots.
I think they look a lot healthier afterwards......like they should be
Agreed! Thanks for watching my video 🙏
Very nice 👌 excellent end results
Thanks for the kind words 🙏
That black and white thumbnail fooled me and I thought this was a pair of grey Grant Stones that I somehow missed. Grey is the most underrated boot color. I do agree with you though about the versatility and durability of the wax commander, especially living in a tropical climate where it rains all the time. I'm really wondering how these will age and patina.
Ha! Sorry I fooled you. I’ve always liked GS’s storm kudu, but never clicked purchase. I think I’ll have to look into a pair forreal now.
I am actually curious though, is there going to be significant wear and patina difference between waxed commander, being a waxed suede on steroids and something like a waxed roughout or waxed flesh. I only have smooth leathers like calf, gaucho crazy horse and cxl up to this point and a waxed flesh/roughout/suede is certainly on the menu. That is unless OSB brings back their indigo roughout field boot in my size and take my lunch money first lol.
I think they look far better after conditioning. I have a very old pair of cowboy boots made in Phoenix. The reason they lasted so long is down to conditioning every so often and really not worrying about the patina. As it happens they now have a lovely patina that can only be achieved through time, and not neglect.
Awesome. How old are those boots?
Pro tip? - Apply the leather cream with an old toothbrush. Gets in everywhere so easy and you dont need to fiddle around with your fingers
This is a great idea - idk why I’ve never thought of it. Thanks for the tip!
Really enjoyed the video! These are on my short list. Would certainly like to see Grant Stone offer more color choices with the lug soles. Who made the kilties you have on the boots? They look great on them!
The lug soles are great, but they make the boots pretty heavy. The kilties are from Rose Anvil. They’re thin, but I like them. Thanks for the kind words 🙏
Andrew is the best! 👍
Yeah he’s the man. I really respect him for what he’s doing.
Nice job! All of my boots have natural edges and I’ve honestly enjoyed watching the welt patina as much and sometimes more than the rest of the boot. lol
Thanks a lot! The edge will darken over time regardless, but I agree that watching the midsole and heel stack patinate is just as cool as seeing the uppers take on character.
