  • Air quality is still an issue in livestock buildings integrating enhanced animal welfare considerations. Compared to conventional barns, these alternative barns generally have increased animal activity and the addition of bedding materials. This project compared the air quality of conventional and alternative housing systems in poultry, dairy and pig operations to evaluate and mitigate the hazards and risks to workers and livestock.
The Developing Strategies to Minimize Health Risks in Next-Generation Livestock Buildings Integrating Modern Animal Welfare Considerations project is one part of Agrivita Canada Inc.’s Canadian AgriSafety Applied Science Program, led by a team of researchers from the Research and Development Institute for the Agri-Environment (IRDA, www.irda.qc.ca) with support from the Quebec Heart and Lung Institute (IUCPQ, www.iucpq.qc.ca), Laval University (www.ulaval.ca), the Canadian Centre for Rural and Agricultural Health (CCRAH, cchsa-ccssma.usask.ca), the Prairie Swine Centre (www.prairieswine.com), the CRSAD (crsad.qc.ca) and the CDPQ (www.cdpq.ca). This video was prepared by the CCRAH for Agrivita Canada Inc. (www.agrivita.ca) and the Canadian AgriSafety Applied Science Program, which is supported under the Canadian Agricultural Strategic Priorities Program (CASPP).
