    Hey, creative director for Abigor here. I always knew in the back of my mind that there was a chance we could show up on an Iron Pineapple video but I didn't think it would actually happen. Our team worked really hard on Abigor for 8 months and put our hearts into it. Glad you had fun with it; I couldn't hope for more! Thanks for playing, made my day.

      @@Avrysatos
      Little Witch Nobeta: amazing blend of Resident Evil and Souls gameplay + cute and horror artstyles, it's a bit exploitative of characters and I wish levels weren't just the same 2 textures repeated over and over infinitely, but the core gameplay is an amazing mix of systems that synergize with each other and the bosses are really good. (The full release happened like a week ago btw)
      TUNIC: It's got an amazing sense of mystery and discovery due to some stuff I can't even talk about without spoiling the experience. If you like ARGs or grew up with 1990s gaming instruction manuals and schoolyard rumors, this game will speak to you on a personal level.
      Ender Lilies: It's got the souls sadness more than the gamplay, but the "you can leave a spirit behind and keep moving while it attacks autonomously" mechanic is pretty fun and has a lot of depth. The map is an atrocious mess that makes it HARDER to understand areas and also doubles as a little nagging reminder to backtrack to complete areas (which usually fails because of how many movement abilities you need) and overall I burned out on it so much near the end, I reached the final boss but never even fought them.
      Death's Gambit: played this in early access and replayed it when the big overhaul dropped, IMO the final cut made it worse (the forced humor just ruins the somber elements, most of the new areas are featureless padding corridors, the new ending selection gimmick actively punishes you for trying to enjoy all the content in the game, and don't get me started on the stat and upgrade systems...)
      Vigil: The Longest Night: I haven't actually played it yet (I got it right before Elden Ring news started happening and then got permanently distracted by FROMSoftware) so I can't tell you what I think about it yet, but it looks amazing.
      Death Trash: Also haven't played it, I'm thinking I'll hold off until it leaves early access, but I love it conceptually and style-wise so I just had to support the dev right away.
      Hellpoint: Amazing area design and has one of the best hubs in any soulslike, indie or not, but the gameplay is really janky with little touches like "hitboxes appear the same frame as attack tells, so you can't use the tell do see attacks coming before they hit you". If you play soulslikes for exploration, taking cool screenshots and feeling insignificant you might enjoy it, if you play for the core gameplay loop you probably won't.
      It really was 7 games, huh? I didn't realize until I counted...

      I'm wondering if the issues he had with the tankiness of the enemies had to do with him only using the one gun weapon the entire time he was complaining about that. I bet the different weapon types are actually important, and you can't just use the same gun the entire game.

      Almost all of its designs are just amazing. I absolutely love the oversaturated, cartoony design in games. There aren’t a lot of games that use it, and even fewer that do it right. It did the art style right. It’s rough, and the enemies are spongy as all get out, but with a bit of work on the damage and health, it could be an incredible game.

    oh that Tower Princess thing is heartbreaking. Everything looks so passionately crafted....except the actual gameplay. It's like they were putting their all into it and then the budget ran out after they were 20% done, and everything had to be designed around hiding that.

    • @CrysJaL

      Seems to me more like its a matter of good graphics designers and animation with poor combat/gameplay design. It's pretty common imo, a pretty product made by some good graphics people who aren't good at gameplay.

    • @Stroggoii
      @Stroggoii Год назад +59

      At least fixing the absurdly spongy enemy issue is the kind of thing you can fix with a weekend of text editing. It's just a matter of them wanting to.

    • @CrysJaL
      @CrysJaL Год назад +32

      @@Stroggoii Balancing is one issue, but it's things like fluidity, mechanics and general gameplay that suffer, not just the numbers. Take the Calisto Protocol as a key example of that (although its enemies were also pretty spongey).

    • @ledumpsterfire6474
      @ledumpsterfire6474 Год назад +21

      It's actually really not that bad. I'd say even the combat is about 70% of the way there. Level design, maybe 20% since there's so much repetition; most roguelikes use proc-gen for a reason. Character controller like 80%, it just needs a lot of polish. Some balancing later, and it would probably be a pretty solid game.
      It takes so little to make a game feel bad. Like a platformer with no coyote time, which seems like a very minor addition, leads to a lot of people feeling deaths are unfair which sucks the fun out of it for them.

    • @hazukichanx408
      @hazukichanx408 Год назад +43

      @@CrysJaL Having gone to college to study game design, I can confirm that (usually, at least) artists, designers and programmers tend to be very different personality types with drastically differing levels of competence. A designer worth their salt can balance a game, write well, make sure it's fun to play - but can't draw very well and putting together even basic code is a stretch (this was me). Artists, they can paint a gorgeous vibrant cascade of evocative imagery, _provided_ they don't have to do it with words. And programmers, well, they make everything work, work their butts off to do so, and are probably the most intelligent team members in terms of raw mental processing power and abstract thinking... while, again, not being great at the other two specializations' fortes.
      It's really just an evolution of the old webcomic dilemma: You either have at least two people working on a comic, or it's going to be either beautiful but vapid... or amazingly written, but look like dog poop. If you want everything to be up to the ever-higher standards we gamers have set for our games, you kinda have to get together a team of talented specialists!
      And those who don't... who lack a proper designer, for instance... well, you can usually tell. This Tower Princess thing sounded like a prime example to me, even before I read your comment.

    notes about Asterigos: Curse of the Stars:
    You can jump, as well. When you played, though, the jump input was to input the sprint input and the dodge input simultaneously; now there's a separate input for it.
    Every weapon has a special attack that is used when you switch to it from your other weapon.
    That's really not very relevant anymore because you did this two months ago, but whatever.

    Hat tip to you playing Wo Long : Fallen Dynasty demo! I beaten the PS5 version and have a bonus waiting. For me, troubles started at the half-point near the boss but I managed to request some back-up and finish him off with two peeps just before the lockdown time on it. Another problem to me is one must take note on leveling up; choose their elements wisely because boost one, lose two... tricky! This is where balance is key. And *yes* I agree with you completely that deflecting moves of the enemy to me felt very weak (and got me in a lot of trouble at the later half-point) and at least the 2nd attempt and onward against the major boss was me being hyper-aggressive on him and cornering him. Went well till Form-2 in which he was not staggered that easily even against 3 peeps to 1, but we did it.

    As a side note, Little Witch Nobeta, which Pineapple reviewed in a past episode, came out this Thursday.
    It has mostly positive reviews on Steam, so it might be worth checking out.

    The asterigos demo was great. I kinda wish the weapons worked so that you could press a button to switch between the two, and left click and right click or whatever are the attacks for one weapon and then you can press a button to toggle to the other one.

    These videos give me ideas for comedy RPGs. Like if you defeat the tutorial boss in one hit, he admits you are stronger, and we get a 30 second training montage of the boss. It cuts back to you just lounging around in the boss arena as the boss returns, and now the real fight begins.

      I also wish the scene with the TNT barrels had a QTE so you’d roll and magically survive the explosion. There was a lot of missed potential!

    Great video, as always. I had similar thoughts about Wo Long and suggested in the post-demo survey the tutorial better expound the energy system and that the deflect timing is too narrow. Team Ninja did listen to a lot of feedback and make changes after the Nioh 1+2 demos, so hopefully there's been even more people of the same opinion. Really excited for it; has a lot of potential!

    • @kenjutsukata1o1

      Yeah, Team Ninja are really good about listening to the feedback from fans, as well as knowing which ones to ignore. I love that they got rid of the durability system for gear, that probably would have completely ruined the game for me (it was a huge pain in the ass in the demo). But there were a shocking number of people begging them to make the attack buttons R1/RB and R2/RT and getting rid of the stance system, which I'm glad they *didn't* do.

    • @sneakysnorkel5278
      @sneakysnorkel5278 2 года назад +1

      Couldn't agree more. Those issues from the demo are exactly what I was thinking about. The stance system is waaaaaay smoother to play with.

    Tower Princess and Sir Whoopass feel like with a little more polish and followthrough they could have really recreated the magic of niche/overlooked but fun games from the 360 era. They ended up falling kinda flat but they showed a lot of potential from their respective makers.
