The video starts out with him posing a hypothetical music theory question, answers it initially with "I don't know..." and tells the viewers [in his own words] that "this isn't going to be very good", and then proceeds to ascend all guitar IQ on the fly. This guy is literally my guitar hero.
I really enjoy watching him play, the way he plays things that are difficult and makes them seem so easy to do. I hope he lives a long and blessed life.
I don't care about this current age of Instagram neo-soul guitar wannabes, BUT Mateus' style is still so beautiful and smooth and pleasant and melodic. He's definitely in a league of his own. His style always inspires me to explore more melodies and chordwork, but sounding like him is definitely a challenge.
When you say "insta neosoul guitar wannabes" what exactly do you mean by that? Why is it so bad? Why are they wannabes? Can you cite some names that come to mind when you think of that?
I’ve been deliberately avoiding working on anything by or like Mateus for a long time for the same reason. But he’s just so good at what he does, I’m finally starting to listen to him and try to learn from his playing. Took me awhile to get over myself 😅
Wow, Mateus my favourite for a while now, his taste, his feel is soo good, like the most comfortable feeling ever. He's got an old soul, but a young mind, and these two together some kind of magic.
An old soul but a young mind, a nice description of him. His taste and feel is out of this world with so much joy radiating. That magic of his is sublime yes!
I hope this guy puts out an instrumental guitar album. He, like Matteo Mancuso, gives me hope that some young players will not let the art of guitar playing fade away. Incredible talent and very humble.
what a gem of a video. that first thing he did in the beginning was actually awesome. kind of like putting using all 6 strings for something and forcing polyphony
He is talking about the most influential musician in Brazil for the last 20 years, Juninho Afram. Nobody in Brazil's history influenced more people to start playing the guitar. Our Goat.
Seeing Rick Beato watch Mateus Asato sharing his guitar style while playing it in Rick's signature guitar that is currently at a $2K is something we don't see everyday!
Thoroughly enjoyable video, Rick! As an older player, I went back to 09s probably two years ago (I started having joint and arthritis issues). I needed to not “overwork” my hands. Originally, I thought that my tone would become too thin or brittle. However, I was rapidly reminded that tone knobs and equalizers are magnificent things. Not only did my tone not suffer, I prefer it to when I played 10s.
this is a realy nice guy , with an honest tone. He really have worked and practiced, no doubt, but he kept some really nice organic approach to it. Its fragile, in a way. Hes shyness, and personality comes out in his playing. Very charming . great from Beato, giving us the chance to get to know those talented young guys .
Govan is great but for me small doses, he reminds me of a supercharged Legato Joe. And like Henson and those guys, very small doses and that’s al I’ll say on that.
So cool that he found his own lane by being inspired by other players and instruments. Hopefully those who learn Mateus' licks will not simply copy but use it to find their own lane.
He is not just another shredder, he actully has something original and melodic to say.
Do you think touching hair many times still masculine?
I see it so weird. More than girls do..

Every time I hear him play it's always a joyful vibe, it's really enchanting. His whole heart goes into it, love it!
2:05 this for myself, for the future myself that will comeback to this video to smile while watching Mateus doing beautiful things

If I could ever learn this opening lick I would be satisfied with my guitar playing for life.
you would not; nobody ever is

I wished something similar more than a decade ago. After I learned the guitar intro I wanted, I became dissatisfied again. 😂😂 So, it's a NO for me 😂
I usually have such feelings, but immediately I get it. I'll move on to another challenge and end up with I started.

Amazing, totally unique player, and a very likable human being.

His acoustics are particularly my favourite..clean arrangement
The best thing is that he’s amazing from clean acoustic guitar all the way to very distorted solos/riffs. Mateus is exquisitely complete
what a sound man i would relax all day with that tone.
this is lovely interview you get a real feeling of who MA is, and how he got to play like this...
love this guy! He is taking so much fun from what he is doing! Pure joy!
Thanks for this! I'm glad he admitted that the double-stops are tough as he makes them look worryingly easy.
I can't get enough of his playing. He has such a amazingly musical approach to his phrasing!
He loves to play. That's all he cares about - goals :)
