Thanks for having me on this, Tim. It was a big honor to me, as usual. I know this is gonna sound "pathetically cliché" but the one who was really having a lesson in that room was me, honestly. It feels like that every single time I see you play the guitar and also when I have the chance to listen to you speaking about your life-career. So inspiring! (:
Hope y'all check the entire video out. It was a great time!
    Best,

Mateus, you are one of my most favorite guitarist discoveries of the last year. Just such an incredible combination of "shred" combined with a truly beautiful melodic soul.
I absolutely love the fact that Tim Pierce, a complete LEGEND appears to have taken a huge interest in your career and playing. The segment you did with Tim and the amazing Pete Thorn was fantastic, with my only criticism being that it was not 6 hours long. :)
Mateus, Pete is working on a new solo album - it seems like a natural fit to me if you were somehow able to contribute to that.
      continued success Mateus!

Pentatonics just get a bad rap from elistist players because of their seeming ease of play on the guitar. But pentatonics are used very widely, even in complex genres like jazz. When you take away the technical difficulty of playing something and just look at musical output, pentatonics work so well musically.

I'm not telling this to brag, but I have been searching how to get that kind of sound for 6 months. Yesterday I figured it out how to get this out of my Two-Rock studio pro 35. The simplicity caught me off guard. Turn an amp up and let the tubes work until you're getting that power sag. Then turn the guitar's volume down to clean it up a bit. And have a great reverb set up. I was in sound heaven yesterday. Sadly, I can't play like him.

    • @joshmuz9018

@@colaboytje something Mayer always said. Play strat with volume and tone on 10 if you want a 1950s hank Marvin sound. But if you want a great feeling tone roll them down to like 8 or 9

    • @colaboytje
      @colaboytje 5 лет назад

@@joshmuz9018 According to me, Mayer said that as PR for the silver sky. He said that 'normal' strats sound to sharp, so he turned the tone down a bit. But according to him the SS doesn't have that so you can leave the tone at 10. But reviews say the SS is brighter than a 'normal' strat.
I prefer to play with tone wide open

Written while listening to Mateus' first section - over and over again
    One day you'll fly away
Spread your wings upon the wind
Their feathered shroud will kiss the stars in all our dreams
All the best must leave it seems
    Lovers share the carousel
Know well to never hold too tight
To wonderings of when and where, the heartbreak scenes,
The best just have to breathe it seems
The sinking ship slides slender down
With moonlight splitting on the ice
While deck chairs pirouette as dancers with the screams
The best have eyeblink lives it seems
    Bow broke and folly full
Three crosses spelt a triad kill
Yet one among would beat the curse of death for all anthropocene
This best was better than them all it seems

Man.....if Mateus had an album of songs, none of them would be filler, and if they were , we wouldn't notice! This guy's riffs are so gorgeous, because they are all embellished (but not overly done) in some way and incredibly melodic. And melody is the language of the soul. It communicates to the heart what words cannot. It is melody that commands people to say, "I want to listen to it again". Technical proficiency and speed can impress upon the intellectual mind, but the gift of melody impresses upon the heart itself. I don't think that can be stated enough. And we know this truth as self evident. That's why we can be moved to tears with music. Mateus is greater than even he knows. May he forever be grounded in the Source behind the gospel tradition he comes from. He is profoundly blessed.

Single-string playing is a super useful concept that I've personally used to great effect (to my own sense of satisfaction!) I totally agree that it has a more vocal-like quality to it. One reason I think is that it encourages you to use more forms of articulation in order to maintain interest, which just aren't possible with a box-position pentatonic, i.e you can't slide from one note to another for every note in the scale. These articulations can in some cases make it more vocal like, slides and long slurs etc. Another reason I think it's more vocal-like is that you'll tend to not span much more than one octave, and for people like me who cannot sing at all, it feels more accessible, as if I could join in and hum along.

This intro solo is the most beautiful and emotional solo I've heard in my entire life. The solo got me questioned myself, "can humans' soul be able to listen to music when we leave this world for heavenly abode"? If it does, i'm listening to this ♡♡♡

This evening I was watching a Chet Baker movie and how ever a total different period and style, the lyrisism and Soul is there in both styles.Melodic playing from the Soul. This is what I'm always attracted too, greetings Vic.

When I heard him play guitar I already noticed a Derek Trucks influence in there and he just confirmed it a few seconds after me thinking about it. There's that gospel/slide guitar style of playing that is really evident on him

Interesting how he uses the pentatonic scale to have a break in his double stops and routine :D. It keeps interesting that way, after that he continues the same route. Genius :)

So glad to see guitar has moved away from that distorted a million notes per second with giant whammy bar pulls like a screeching cat over and over and over like vai, petrucci, satch is ending and people are loving melodic, soulful and tasteful guitarists nowadays instead. It actually sounds 'good and not just technically good

Cheers from Brasil Mateus and Tim !! What you talked about on minute 5.00, i think Eric Jonson does it a lot in his solos, about pentatonics.

Mateus has such a dynamic touch and great interaction with the strings to create a tone. Mancuso is impressive technically, but I’m much more touched by mateus‘s playing
