The M5 has always been --- from an engineering stand-point --- a very technological, very powerful 4 door sedan. The current model is likely no exception. And I've THOUGHT, for years/decades, from a purely AESTHETICALLY stand-point, that the BMW M5 always has been one of the most exquisitely put together, big, square/boxy 4 door super sedan. All models throughout the years, decades, have their nooks & crannies, odds & ends, goods, bads, and uglies, of course. No car design ever is "perfect"... But the current M5 is the only model whose REAR END DESIGN reminds me --- upon first & last visual inspections --- of the -ungainly, ugly, slanting, Hyena-like posture of a $15,000 Nissan Sentra of the 1990s. Horrible tail end design. After decades of marvelling at the M5, thinking it's the most beautiful 4 door super saloon... I've now moved on to thinking the Porsche Panamera, the Audi E-Tron GT, for example, are just leaps above the M5. Again, from a purely aesthetic stand-point. I am sure engineering wise, & technologically, BMW --- and the mighty M5 --- will remain a true technological power house for years to come, yet. P.S. For reference, & on staying evolutionary with body design (not radical BS like what Lexus been doing the last 8 years alone), I think the larger BMW 7 (including the "M" model) still retain BMW's big, boxy, beautiful design. It is so different from any other major high-end design (Lexus, Mercedes Benz S, Panamera, etc), you know immediately it (the 7 series/7M) is a reliable, historically significant BMW design branding...
No soft-close doors? No massaging seats? No more B&W Diamond surround sound system? No extended interior stitching? Less physical buttons? Way to go with the cost-savings BMW...
i am driving a 2024 X6 and can confirm. the plastic is of a very cheap grade compared to a 2014 M5. flimsy, cheap, lightweight. cheap massive screen in the dashboard that only allows one touch-point at a time. very poor for the user.

Was and still am a huge beemer fan, but some of their cars including this G90 M5 just looks weird to me. The silhouette and the way it looks from some angles is terrible, like the sloping down bootlid, rising window line etc. Also, the interiors look a bit cheap for how much its worth. But overall, a good performance package.
Well as you say, it may be far too heavy for the racetrack, but most people are not going to buy an M5 as their track car, so it doesn't matter that much. Still a lovely car overall and thank goodness they kept the V8.
@@unowen-nh9ov Well that's to demonstrate how capable it of a car it is (which I'm not disputing). But ultimately, a 2.4 tonne car is not ideal as a serious track car, unless you just want to do the odd track day. Obviously you'll get much better lap times with a lighter and more track focused car, than a 2.4 tonne M5.
@@DanielSadjadian True. But given that this is largest 5 ever, it's not going to compete on weight. Achilles' track test says PHEV eliminates torque curve, power spontaneous.
@@unowen-nh9ov Yeah I saw Joe's review, it's a very impressive car for the weight for sure. I do love the instant throttle response of the PHEV setup and I've seen the autobahn runs, it's a very fast car. It's just the corners were it will be left behind by lighter cars such as the M3 (or the previous gen M5 CS). But I do agree, BMW deserve credit for making such a heavy car handle and drive so well.
it's not just about the track... how about us that live in Bavaria / Austria - we enjoy driving on our tight roads... drove this m5 and it was understeering into all the corners because it is heavy af
9:12 "I don't know what the interior designers were thinking" There are no more interior designers anywhere to be found for modern German cars. Even before you opened the door, I knew it would be the same interior we've seen for the last couple of years: a thrown iPad in lieu of a proper dashboard, capacitive buttons, and scratch-prone and reflective piano black. Even if I could afford it, I wouldn't buy it. This is for people who buy BMWs as a status symbol. The illuminated grille is tasteless. Also from your conclusion: the M5 is not for M fans. Nice.
Ambient lighting is a distraction and not necessary, another channel pointed out it is cheaper for a touch screen, but more dangerous, because the driver is distracted!
I have a deposit on the M5 Touring here in the US, and I'm unsure of what to do. I do not like the design and body lines, but a BMW M series wagon is hard to pass up, as we don't get any other wagon here.
@@autogefuehl forgot to say, I like your final conclusion as well, a better M car for most, but worse for the M purist. And I have a sneaking suspicion this new M5 will break sales records
This is my personal opinion. The definition of design is that the moment the consumer sees it for the first time, it should make them think, “I want this.” Designs become familiar only with time, but money does not wait for time for companies.
BMW know what they are doing. They have to make compromises nowadays. Happily not same way as Jaguar ;) The Review is very informative as always. Thank you.
True BMW fans , who can afford an M5 will buy it. Instead of making noise on the comments section, don’t buy the car if you don’t like it. Going on about weight, as if this car is for the racetrack…
This standard wheelbase of 5 series (okay M5 in this case) Looks so much better than LWB 5-series that we get in India. Like the regular new 5-series literally lost its mojo here. Though, M5 and i5 are still available in SWB but they cost really a lot over the regular 5-series.
I wonder if there is any chance they might wind the engine up and take the battery out for the Alpina version if they keep low volume OEM status Does the 550e feel sweater given 300kg less. Less power obviously
Best M5 review I have watched so far, Thomas. Very balanced, objective, super informative and insightful. Thank you! I have owned many M5s since the a E39 in 1999 as well as a few 750i. Based on your review, I expect that I will like the combination of high performance, comfort and great handling offered by the new M5 - at 56yrs old I no longer want a purist M-car! My current daily is RS6 Performance and I am keen to see if a test drive will tempt me out of the Audi into the M5. Thanks again fora great review. Am a fan of your work. 👍
rather buy a f90 over a new m5 coming from a f90 owner. One thing i would wish my car had was the battery to make the cold start quite especially with the MPE.
Brabus put a carbon rear wing on a G-Wagon. I remember the days that BEVs were considered heavy. The longest range Lucid Air is more spacious, more powerful, lighter and may even have more race than this M5 :)
is it just me or does the new M5 look kind of "slow" when compared to the M3? it just looks took tame and civilized. The M3 looks like it's always trying to pick a fight to every other car on the road. :)
0:08 I mean, look at this. Sharpy edges, glossy-black trim, small headlights, protruding front and lower grilles. Underneath all this hideous exterior clothing I'm sure there's an amazing engineering work, but the way they've choosen to present it is simply awful, unfortunately. I always thought of Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series as two different, yet very beautiful expressions of how an executive sedan should be designed. But this time there is no argument, the E-Class looks way better.
I’m just not liking the new dashboards in BMW’s - the big screen looks like it was bought from Temu for under €20. Look at the dash in the 8 series Gran Coupe - so much nicer.
Are BMW animal grown especially for the skin? I bet most are just offering leather as a by-product to crucial healthy sustenance supply. If we all stopped using leather overnight, we'd be piling it on waste dumps or trying to burn it cleanly. Quite a lot of it. Commanding extra resources for non-animal skin alternative may actually be a lot less "green", depending on one's chosen definition to suit the specific narrative that suits them for the issue at hand. I'm not a fan of leather unless I can get good seat ventilation. Sweaty back. I'd want back ventilation in my t-shirts, dress suits, winter jackets, everything :) Imagine we could add in some body deodorant to our sent vents, just a quick extra cool application :)
Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment. You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at ruclips.net/video/S1aNZeoatmE/видео.html). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: ruclips.net/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/видео.html And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: ruclips.net/video/6vXePQi_MAk/видео.html New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect, even for cleaning: ruclips.net/video/u94YXJ72UTA/видео.html More and more natural materials are rising: ruclips.net/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/видео.html Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: ruclips.net/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/видео.html For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: ruclips.net/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/видео.html Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. Also a group of researchers and German journalists from public media could recent directly trace the connection between car animal leather production and illegal burning down Amazon rain forest: www.daserste.de/information/reportage-dokumentation/ard-story/videos/illegales-leder-video-100.html In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse? Remember that animal skin leather is no different to fur, fur is just leather where the hair is still on. And fur is widely not accepted for clothing anymore, and of course not for cars. We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future. For a great insight into sustainability in the automotive industry, you can also check out our extensive documentary: ruclips.net/video/-8gNXlRGngA/видео.html The argument that leather is merely a "waste" product of the food industry and therefore ethical or sustainable has been a topic of debate, and there are several reasons why it is considered problematic and unethical: 1. Leather is a Profitable Co-Product, not a Byproduct. * Leather is not a waste material. It is a valuable co-product of the meat and dairy industries, meaning that the skins and hides of animals are sold for profit. The global leather industry is worth billions of dollars, and the demand for high-quality leather, particularly for luxury goods, is significant. * Economic Contribution: By buying leather, consumers are directly contributing to the profitability of the meat and dairy industries, reinforcing demand for animal farming. Leather adds financial value to the slaughter of animals, which in turn incentivizes the continuation of intensive animal agriculture. 2. Encourages the Environmental Impact of Animal Farming * Environmental Harm: Animal farming is a leading cause of environmental degradation. It contributes to deforestation, water pollution, and is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. The leather industry, as part of this system, intensifies the environmental impact. * Tanning Process: Leather production itself is extremely resource-intensive and involves harmful chemicals like chromium, which can pollute water sources and harm ecosystems and communities living near tanneries. The argument that leather is a "waste" deflects from these significant environmental costs. 3. Supports Cruel Animal Farming Practices * Factory Farming: Most leather comes from animals raised in factory farms where they endure inhumane conditions-such as overcrowding, mutilation (dehorning, tail docking), and often brutal slaughter practices. * Leather Sources Beyond Cattle: It’s important to note that leather is not only sourced from cows. Other animals such as pigs, sheep, goats, and even exotic animals like crocodiles and snakes are often killed specifically for their skins. In some cases, animals are bred solely for leather production, especially in the case of exotic leathers. 4. Leather’s Role in the Global Meat and Dairy Supply Chain * The "Chicken and Egg" Relationship: The leather industry is deeply intertwined with the meat and dairy supply chains. It is misleading to claim that leather is merely a waste product when in reality it adds value to the entire system. The more leather that is purchased, the more profitable it becomes for the animal agriculture industry to keep raising and slaughtering animals. * Ethical Disconnect: From an ethical standpoint, using leather under the assumption that it’s “just waste” ignores the larger systemic issues of animal exploitation. It perpetuates a cycle where animals are bred, confined, and slaughtered in massive numbers, not just for meat but also for profit from their hides. 5. There Are Viable, Sustainable Alternatives * Innovation in Vegan Leathers: Today, there are numerous cruelty-free, sustainable alternatives to animal leather, such as pineapple leather (Piñatex), mushroom leather, apple leather, and even lab-grown leather. These options do not involve the same ethical, environmental, or health concerns as traditional leather production. * Sustainability Argument: Many leather alternatives are far more environmentally friendly. For instance, plant-based and recycled materials often require fewer resources and generate less pollution compared to the production of leather from animal hides, which requires heavy water and energy consumption and the use of toxic chemicals in tanning. 6. Moral and Ethical Considerations * Devaluing Animal Lives: By framing leather as a “waste” product, it downplays the intrinsic value of animal lives and reduces sentient beings to mere commodities. This perspective is often criticized for failing to acknowledge the rights of animals to live free from exploitation and harm. * Speciesism: The belief that animals can be farmed for their skins because their lives are less important than human needs or luxury goods can be seen as a form of speciesism-the assumption that human interests always take precedence over the welfare of other species, even when non-leather alternatives are available. 7. Global Impact on Communities * Health Risks to Workers: Many leather tanneries, especially in developing countries, expose workers to unsafe chemicals like chromium salts. These chemicals can cause severe health issues, including cancer, respiratory problems, and skin conditions. Communities near tanneries often suffer from polluted water and land. * Environmental Justice: Often, the communities that are most affected by the environmental harm of the leather industry are poor and marginalized. These populations bear the brunt of the environmental degradation, even though the demand for leather comes largely from wealthier consumers in more developed countries. The idea that leather is a "waste" product from the food industry is misleading and unethical because it ignores the significant role that leather plays in the profitability of animal farming, the environmental degradation it causes, the cruelty inherent in the industry, and the availability of sustainable alternatives. To label leather as mere "waste" downplays its substantial impact on both animals and the environment, making this argument a way to justify the continued use of an ethically and environmentally problematic material.
@@autogefuehl What a great reply Thomas. Thanks you for all those considerations looking at both sides of the debate. I love my animals and it really does bother me how many are treated horrifically during their time before they're killed. You only need to see the incredible videos of rescue farms sitting with their cows on the grass while the cow has his/her head in his owners lap asleep while he's patting him/her or the way in which pigs who've been freed from hellish conditions do zoomies around the paddock so excited and happy they're free. We absolutely need to do so much better in the way these animals are treated and they at the very least should be allowed to live and pursue natural behaviours while they're alive free of pain and discomfort..
Fugly. But it's BMW fugly so at least it's consistent. You've got to hand it to the BMW design team, they are doubling down on their design language as long as they are selling cars. But this is a 2.5 tonne monster - and it looks like it.
It’s a car I cannot afford, so what I think will have zero impact on its sales. Not a big fan of the new headlights and illuminated kidneys. The side profile looks good.
Honestly didn't like it. Even the E60 looks gorgeous compared to this. But if they wanted a nice design, bring back a E34 or E39 retro-inspired design. ☕️🗿
There was the KIA inspiration, now I see the gopher/groundhog inspiration of the front, cannot be unseen 😅 Also, why review turning indicators on a BMW? :D Jokes aside, thanks for the reviews! ❤ Keeps them coming! BR from Poland!

Interior is most definitely a downgrade. Less stitching, more plastic and piano black. Those screens are an afterthought in design and are a glare/dust magnet.
What a joke, you buy an m5 @2,5t and you have to pay for the for the optional ceramic brakes. My god those should be standard at this point. Furthermore 3,5 0-100kmh when the battery has power then you also get the full hp. What about when it is empty and you only have 530hp?😅
It would be great if you could find a proper way to place the camera in the center of cars that don’t have a panoramic roof. If you remember, I was one of the first people to comment repeatedly back then, when all the videos were filmed with the camera on the side window. You listened, and I believe that was one of the reasons for the channel's growth. I think you could find a way to securely fix the camera in the center using the seat rods.
This is a study of how ugly a car can be made and still there are people that buy it.. The front is ugly, the color is ugly, the black wheels are ugly and I am of the older generation that appreciated great elegant design, and I can buy a few of these without applying for a loan. So the designers clearly do not target me as the demographics for this vehicle.

Way to go with the cost-savings BMW...
this is not mercedes kid
@@tracy062 bro the f10 m5 had all of these luxuries, even e60 m5, no one wants this garvage even if its not a mercedes
I honestly have nothing against the exterior design. But I have a lot against the interior of a 150k car being cheaper than a Dacia.
i am driving a 2024 X6 and can confirm. the plastic is of a very cheap grade compared to a 2014 M5. flimsy, cheap, lightweight. cheap massive screen in the dashboard that only allows one touch-point at a time. very poor for the user.
@@benicia21 It's sad how differences between car brands are disappearing, budget/premium - soon all the same. I'm never changing my 2020 7 series.

Beautiful car , so sophisticated ! Dream car....
For the next gen M5 we all need truck driving licence😂

Nothing polarizing about this. It's downright hideous. Glad their head of design is leaving. He can ruin Rolls-Royce instead

You do the the M5 Touring!
Porsche is the only German car company that still makes beautiful cars

I like him as well, but you clearly haven't got fashion sense

Well as you say, it may be far too heavy for the racetrack, but most people are not going to buy an M5 as their track car, so it doesn't matter that much. Still a lovely car overall and thank goodness they kept the V8.
Introduced this @ Salzburgring, so they disagree.
9:12 "I don't know what the interior designers were thinking"
There are no more interior designers anywhere to be found for modern German cars.
Nice.
I love the design, classy yet sporty. I guess if the price was not an objection, I will get one of these.
Ambient lighting is a distraction and not necessary, another channel pointed out it is cheaper for a touch screen, but more dangerous, because the driver is distracted!
I love this car. I think the design is aggressive and extremely modern.
In a decade it will be appreciated.
Honestly, it is the first 5-series I don’t even want to sit inside. Time to buy relatively fresh F90 and wait for the rain to stop.
I think it’s better that it’s heavy, it sticks to the road better 😅
Beautiful car 👍
Good job Thomas and Lea 👌

I have a deposit on the M5 Touring here in the US, and I'm unsure of what to do. I do not like the design and body lines, but a BMW M series wagon is hard to pass up, as we don't get any other wagon here.

190 MPH is insane in the membrane.
The exterior reminds me of 1990.

This is my personal opinion. The definition of design is that the moment the consumer sees it for the first time, it should make them think, “I want this.” Designs become familiar only with time, but money does not wait for time for companies.

What is the average annual tyre bill on the outgoing and new model, with the weight and power difference?
BMW know what they are doing. They have to make compromises nowadays. Happily not same way as Jaguar ;) The Review is very informative as always. Thank you.

True BMW fans , who can afford an M5 will buy it.
Instead of making noise on the comments section, don’t buy the car if you don’t like it.
Going on about weight, as if this car is for the racetrack…
I’m really wondering what BMW thinks are target customers of this vehicle (150k - 170k)? Is it really better than Porsche or Mercedes AMG ?
This standard wheelbase of 5 series (okay M5 in this case) Looks so much better than LWB 5-series that we get in India. Like the regular new 5-series literally lost its mojo here. Though, M5 and i5 are still available in SWB but they cost really a lot over the regular 5-series.
I wonder if there is any chance they might wind the engine up and take the battery out for the Alpina version if they keep low volume OEM status Does the 550e feel sweater given 300kg less. Less power obviously
they wont, Alpina wont even build cars anymore soon. More background on that in here: ruclips.net/video/x07jLnyc3nk/видео.html

by the way, the pure electric new 5er is better because of the much lower center of gravity. (due to placement of the battery)

Adding carbon fiber on a 5400lb (2450 kg) car is hilarious.

A lot of people were hating on the Bangle designs, but just what the H. is this?
Look at the dash in the 8 series Gran Coupe - so much nicer.

as far as I'm concerned 5 series ended with previous gen and this 5 ton plastic excrement doesn't even exist
Its hot 🔥
It looks absolutely stunning. BMW pushing the trends as usual. All 5s are hated at first
Are BMW animal grown especially for the skin?
A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: ruclips.net/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/видео.html

In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter.

The argument that leather is merely a "waste" product of the food industry and therefore ethical or sustainable has been a topic of debate, and there are several reasons why it is considered problematic and unethical:
2. Encourages the Environmental Impact of Animal Farming
* Environmental Harm: Animal farming is a leading cause of environmental degradation.
3. Supports Cruel Animal Farming Practices
* Factory Farming: Most leather comes from animals raised in factory farms where they endure inhumane conditions-such as overcrowding, mutilation (dehorning, tail docking), and often brutal slaughter practices.
4. Leather’s Role in the Global Meat and Dairy Supply Chain
* The "Chicken and Egg" Relationship: The leather industry is deeply intertwined with the meat and dairy supply chains.
5. There Are Viable, Sustainable Alternatives
* Innovation in Vegan Leathers: Today, there are numerous cruelty-free, sustainable alternatives to animal leather, such as pineapple leather (Piñatex), mushroom leather, apple leather, and even lab-grown leather.
6. Moral and Ethical Considerations
* Devaluing Animal Lives: By framing leather as a “waste” product, it downplays the intrinsic value of animal lives and reduces sentient beings to mere commodities.
7. Global Impact on Communities
* Health Risks to Workers: Many leather tanneries, especially in developing countries, expose workers to unsafe chemicals like chromium salts.

* Economic Contribution: By buying leather, consumers are directly contributing to the profitability of the meat and dairy industries, reinforcing demand for animal farming. Leather adds financial value to the slaughter of animals, which in turn incentivizes the continuation of intensive animal agriculture.
2. Encourages the Environmental Impact of Animal Farming
* Environmental Harm: Animal farming is a leading cause of environmental degradation.
3. Supports Cruel Animal Farming Practices
* Factory Farming: Most leather comes from animals raised in factory farms where they endure inhumane conditions-such as overcrowding, mutilation (dehorning, tail docking), and often brutal slaughter practices.
4. Leather’s Role in the Global Meat and Dairy Supply Chain
* The "Chicken and Egg" Relationship: The leather industry is deeply intertwined with the meat and dairy supply chains.
6. Moral and Ethical Considerations
* Devaluing Animal Lives: By framing leather as a “waste” product, it downplays the intrinsic value of animal lives and reduces sentient beings to mere commodities.
7. Global Impact on Communities
* Health Risks to Workers: Many leather tanneries, especially in developing countries, expose workers to unsafe chemicals like chromium salts.
This design will not age well at all.
The sound of the past is sweet, but it is still not the future.
RS6...
Na
I still find it stupid that top speed wise none of the recent M5 BMW's can come close to the E60 M5
When battery empty, this car is slower than e39 m5..😂😂 heavier than suvs..i dont see any good things about this new m5..price also very high..
Nothing special ! 150k for lots of cheap plastic interior 😅
The car is dying 😩
Ugly looking car imo!
Predictable. BMW had record 2023, but they also have record # trolls.
Junk and expensive junk once the warranty runs out
BMW have lost their way.
bmw made a complete half ass effort with this one... 1k lbs heavier, worse power to weight ratio... and an unecessary phev platform...
Illuminated fat kidneys 🤣
Just noticed the missing iconic M5 side vents 😢
Doesn't need 'em.
It looks like a X7 when you see it in the rear view mirror. I would take the M3 touring anyday over this car actually.... its too big the new M5.
New M5 is matchless & is the GOAT among all German brands... legendary design & performance ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
