So the posted weight is not the actual weight of the car.

I appreciate markets are different everywhere but here in Australia we pay WAY too much for European cars to begin with, but a new M5 here is $280,000, I can pick up a 2020 model for about $150,000. A new 2024 Telsa Model 3 Performance is $90,000 and a 2020 Model 3 Performance is about $45,000. Depreciation is not great on both makes.

Good looking car and I don’t even like bmw’s. The interior and the configuration are crazy, easy to underestimate but that feature with all that options of driving configuration is useful and fun. It’s heavy, it’s a series 5. It also has lots of power and electric features. Not bad.
Even though I will most likely never be able to afford one estate / wagon everyday of the week as to my eye it just looks better. That being said, I have a dog, play drums and have two kids, so useable space is vital for my daily. However, M3 Touring everyday of the week. 2 meters wide and 5 meters long in car parks and B-roads sounds very stressful in the UK.
I wonder where the car weight issue will stop? Will we eventually be driving round in cars with the kerb weight of an HGV? The roads in the UK don't need any extra help in ripping themselves apart.
I always wonder how much damage it causes to an engine in one of these when you've been cruising in EV and then ask the engine to give you everything for an overtake, and the lump is still cold. I'd be a lot happier if I knew it had some sort of oil pre-heater to ensure that the engine was properly ready (maybe it does?).
I don't know for a fact but I'm sure it will take heat and put it through the engine as the oil needs to be a certain temperature to lubricate, otherwise the engine would seize.
@@holdin09 Thats what I would like to happen, but driving our own PHEV (Mitsubishi) I have a different experience... It will happily cruise on EV until it runs out of battery. It doesn't seem to turn the engine over or idle it at all to make sure it's prepared, it just fires it up and asks for all the power when you need it for overtaking. These machines are so complex and most drivers have no mechanical sympathy, but it can't be at all good.
Great video of a great car! I am asking myself if we are heading in the right direction... To experience speed I can ride a race bike with 8kg... Of course you cant compare and this car is an absolute masterpiece. Is it OK to enjoy a car like this in these times ???
Think i will stick to my M550i...the depreciation on this will be savage, doesn't feel any faster and you can feel that weight braking.Mine has a nicer simpler cabin as well
Anyone who has a high HP car knows that you need to get the oil up to temp before you hammer it. So to say you can use EV mode and hammer it when you get out of the neighborhood is not good for the longevity of the engine.
Its amazing how much bollocks people talk about a car because of what it weighs... the truth is if BMW told you its 1.8ton you would believe them, its stupid fast with so much torque it gets up and goes like 99.9 percent of people will never experience, easily enough to scare most 3-5 year old supercars, and by all accounts it corners amazing and flat, has so much grip from its AWD, seats 5 in comfort plus all your baggage. Im struggling to understand the downside, this will go around corners carrying so much more speed than say your average focus ST it will be almost embarrassing so like... who really cares about the weight if the components around that weight deal with it absolutely fine, an mx5 probably leans more in corners than this thing.
Following on from Tom’s comment about the fact you might as well go full EV, please do me a huge favour and race one of these against an I5 M60. Despite being just over 100bhp down, I’m really curious to see how that shakes out. The new M5 is an unfortunate exercise in compliance and regulations - they make it this way because they have to, not because they want to.
This is exactly the kind of car Harry Metcalfe was talking about in his latest video; and the kind of damage vehicles like this are doing to the enthusiast. People are losing interest in new cars. I'm one of them, and there are many. The best cars ever made were built years ago. This new G90 M5 and the Mercedes W206 C63 are poster-children for how disappointing the future is.
Watching this I was reminiscing about my old E34 530i. Then all of a sudden E34 M5 enters the video! If I could have a brand new M5 Touring or my old E34 back, I might just take the E34?
It makes more sense, in the same way that dropping an anvil on your face makes more sense if you once met a blacksmith...yeah, it does, but we're setting the bar pretty low in that regard... There's a lot I don't hate about this car. The styling is far from BMW's worst lately. Again, low bar, it's not pretty, but I wouldn't be embarrassed by it. I drove a G80 M3 over the weekend and I realised something. For road use, the weight is irrelevant. Not because I don't think it's stupid, but because at "normal" speeds they don't drive like M cars anyway - outside a track, the M3 is what the M340i should be, quick but not fun (if you find the M3 fun on a road, you're either doing something illegal or haven't ever driven a fun car). On that basis, the M5 shouldn't be seen as an M5, perhaps it's quite a good M550i... Of course, I don't want a 2.5 tonne M550i, so I don't want this. A modern E39, sure, but that doesn't exist. A 320i or an M340i is a very reasonable choice, but this is a status symbol, for people whose status is "I don't really have a clue how to drive, but I have a dog." Who will buy it? People who should have bought a slower estate, but wanted to piss off their neighbours. Good for them, I'll buy something fun instead.

Most people buying M5s don't look at EVs
@@akilh340how do you know? Is there a number or research on this?
I appreciate markets are different everywhere but here in Australia we pay WAY too much for European cars to begin with, but a new M5 here is $280,000, I can pick up a 2020 model for about $150,000. A new 2024 Telsa Model 3 Performance is $90,000 and a 2020 Model 3 Performance is about $45,000. Depreciation is not great on both makes.
@@rador3573 look at the sales of the electric Abarth and the previous combustion version. the same with the rest of the producers. no one wants electric cars. especially electric sports cars.
@@rador3573 Dozens of channels have been cataloguing this for a while. Major manufacturers have pulled out of Formula E...numerous open statements about EV sales being disappointing. Toyota and other big EV runners already moving to Hydrogen and other alternate fuel forms. And yes, EV's are currently losing between 45-65% of their value in a single year...while stuff like diesel vehicles are losing 8-10% in the same time frame. There is info on this everywhere.
NGL, always loved the touring/avant style...just something about it.
When it's not enough to buy the ///M, but you need to get the "driver's package" for extra $$$ just to disable the speed limiter, you know you are dealing with the wrong brand.
First time the RS6 has EVER been rivaled on looks imo
Stunning car
Can you fit a towbar, what is towing capacity?
What ist the range with the 60L Tank in the normal daylie mode? Its about 800km Range ore less?
My e39 M5 was the most fun tow car I have owned. I would love a modern replacement
Is the saturation on the video turned down? There's a lot of red that looks orange in the video
I'd love to order a new M5 Touring, but my budget can only take a new 550e. Good enough?
Read the road test in a popular car mag and the journalist who wrote the review felt the interior isn't up to usual standard. I looked at one in the flesh today at my dealer and he's not wrong. Very comfortable, though.
The Galant VR4 wagon would have weighed about half this and cost a tiny fraction of it... is that progress? I'm not sure.
New M5 looks great though!
A lot like the E60 M5, the Touring version is absolutely the way to go. The saloon looks like the lovechild of the E60 M5 and a VW Passat B7!
Good looking car and I don’t even like bmw’s. The interior and the configuration are crazy, easy to underestimate but that feature with all that options of driving configuration is useful and fun. It’s heavy, it’s a series 5. It also has lots of power and electric features. Not bad.
It's heavy, can't blown away by wind❤
Touring over the saloon for sure. Shame all the previous gens didn’t get Tourings
Honest question. Why not X5 M comp. If you want room go SUV. It’s it a Europe thing? Thanks
I would still have the RS6 and I have owned 20 bmws
Wow!
Loved that intro
Touring all day every day - but man, the classic bimmers are just choice.
Pls. BMW give us that car without the battery and the rest of the EC stuff and the 4.4 with 650 to 700 HP....as an option. 😢
I wonder where the car weight issue will stop? Will we eventually be driving round in cars with the kerb weight of an HGV? The roads in the UK don't need any extra help in ripping themselves apart.
I like everything except the electronics, so I guess I like the tires, the paint, and the flat-bottomed steering wheel.
When is the 540 touring coming?
Even UGLIER ..!!!😢
AUDI MAKES SOME OF THE BEST LOOKING WAGONS
def looks better than the saloon.
E34 please!
Soooo cool. Defensively the touring.
I wonder if weight wasn't such a priority here because that positions the full electric version that comes out next to be potentially lighter!
it does look good and yeah all the numbers
This should be the M950, as it’s still too heavy to be a 7 series.
@@billymays7210 To be fair, the 7 series is indeed also lighter than this 🤣 Even the 760e is 2560kg, so 15kg less.
A white rhino is also lighter, as is a Bentley Bentayga...and a Giulia QV, towing a trailer, with a Cessna on it.
@ EXACTLY. I might be able to forgive this if it was an Alpina. Remember when Alpina was badass luxury cruiser and M was badass sport sedan?
