Slitor, Hal Jordon didn't become mental because of that. Besides Parallax being a fucking bitch. Satisfaction is what caused this. To succeed in being a Hero. I truly think he is the Greatest Lantern, but he himself was consumed by satisfying his Heroic side. I's not about killing the bad guy but protecting the people who need it most.

I must admit that this story broke my heart . I simply could not believe that my lifelong hero Hal Jordan could fall so far . Broke my heart .
Same here. It was such a bullshit story and typical of DC back then to shake of the status quo for their characters like what they did with Batman and Knightfall and Superman with Death and Return. The thing with Hal becoming Parallax (or becoming possessed by Parallax according to the retcon in Rebirth) though is that it stuck for YEARS unfortunately until Rebirth happened in 2004.

This story is so epic. No, its not a 30+ issue series, covering 8 titles with 15 important characters. Its a short, sad and personal tale about Hal. Love the way you read it out, hit all the right points. Kudos. This channel has tons of GREAT videos, but this one is touched me the most.

Do the Justice League have a fetish for that because I notice that this kind of method has happened a few times in it. I also noticed that in those Green Lantern stories, there was a lot of things involving the mouth with Guardian's puking rings out, swallowing rings, having entities shoved in their rings. What is with that as well? XD

Snapping someone's neck is an effective way of killing them without being too gruesome for your average comic book reader

I know this is the story about how Hal becomes a villain, but I gotta say I was kinda rooting for him.
Plus the fact that he challenges Sinestro with just one ring was pretty bad ass.
i hated the created retconned version of paralax , i really liked the storyline of Hall Jordan just losing it and just going crazy with remorse it was so well done Hall Jordan just going bonkers was the best Fallen Hero story ever.
antwan1357 The writer Geoff Johns the one who wrote Green Lantern:Rebirth (2005) said that he was going to make a story of Hal redeeming himself as green lantern but Geoff said he had no interest of trying to make hal redeem himself.
has anyone noticed now that the old Hal Jordan and the old superman now exist in the new dc universe and also cyborg superman .I really think that the three should get together Especially if Superman recognizes the Old Hall Jordan i mean both being from the old universe that was before new 52 would literally make them like old friends and old enemies at the same time with a huge amount of history especially if the old school wally west or barry allen are around to try and redeem old white side haired Hall Jordan being like hey that universe doesnt exist anymore lets wipe the slate clean and start over, and be friends again with so much history.
@Darth Pancake Studios it was definitely NOT instant. The story has about two or three different retcons with a redemption storyline as Hal Jordon working with a different set of powers being homeless.
@Darth Pancake Studios your take on the original story was probably the reason for the multiple retcons. Then the creation of the parallax creature storyline which was the final storyline absolving Hal Jordan of any wrong doing by saying he was manipulated during a critical breakdown. Still stories exist of green lanterns trying to get payback on Hal after being brought back to life. Not believing the parallax creature storyline.

I've never bought the whole 'Hal was overtaken by Parallax.' I prefer to think that he became Parallax, as it makes him a deeper character. Being possessed makes him weak. Besides, the emergence of Parallax was probably the first time I ever gave a damn about Hal Jordan.
+hurrigame That was pretty much my stance too. I got into him right after the whole death of superman storyline wrapped up. It was also the first time I really read Superman too. Seems when DC decided to shake the status quo by killing Superman and unhinging Green Lantern the characters got my attention. The storylines overlap each other anyways what with Mongul and Cyborg Supes destroying Coast City and Hal unable to let it go. I started reading GL at #46 from his 90's series. I liked how he tried hard to deny it. I even enjoyed the memorial issue in Superman when it all came to a head for Hal. Emerald Twilight showed how Hal's unshakeable resolve could be dangerous if he were pushed emotionally hard enough. Zero Hour wasn't perfect but Parallax was the architect of it all. That was damned interesting to me. What did you think of his time as the Spectre?
+hurrigame They had to bring him back in some way. Doing a story about a mass murderer redeeming himself wouldn't have worked. The reasons Parallax was created in the first place was for shock value, sales spikes, getting rid of the Corps concept, which DC editorial viewed as dragging the stories, and to springboard the introduction of the new protagonist(Kyle). They could've done this in so many other ways without sacrificing the character of Hal Jordan in the process. They destroyed him in 3 issues which made no sense whatsoever. So naturally, when Geoff Johns pitched the idea for Hal's return, he wasn't going to bring back all of that mess, he was going to bring the character back with a clean slate. In fact, a lot of this is brought up in the early issues of Johns' run, when the other Lanterns on Oa look down upon Hal as a murderer and despite knowing that he wasn't actually responsible, Hal still claims that he has innocent blood on his hands and takes responsibility for it. That's what you'd expect of him to do. So it's not like Johns completely tried to wash DC's hands off of everything they did in Emerald Twilight, he just put a twist on it and managed to preserve the legacy of the character in the process. And it worked, that era was the most successful time in the history of the Green Lantern property, before that Hal Jordan was considered to be a relic of the past, now he is in everything GL or Justice League-related. Personally I'm glad to see DC giving the character his due, compared to how they treated him 20 years ago.
Emerald Twilight made me a Hal Jordan fan instantly. It gave him depth and realness that most people could relate to if they lost so much. When that fear entity excuse was enacted by Johns, it made Hal a far less of a great character, who despite being a great superhero with tremendous willpower fell victim to his own feelings of loss, guilt and failure. That version of Hal before he was retconed to be possessed was the realest depiction of a superhero I've ever seen to this day because most of us probably would've done the same thing in his place.

@Darth Pancake Studios Totally agree, as a big Hal Jordan this was just way to out of character had it was set up and developed more it would had been a better story.
We wont be guaranteeing Green Lantern stories weekly again, but we'll probably be very close to that. Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner's stories will be our focus, but since Paralax showed up in Convergence, it seemed like the best time to tell this story. For those of you wondering, this IS in Continuity for all timelines right now, just things have been corrected

KalvinEllis After this he got pushed to the side while he tried to run the Corp, Guy went on to fight in the Red Lantern Civil War and Kyle learned the meaning of life and how to control the power of the white lantern.

+The Mounty A lot of old fans hate for how out of character Hal becomes in the story, but it's basically like how Injustice turned Supes evil (except it wasn't an alternate universe) after a great tragedy struck him. I like it, but I get why people don't like it.
Man, any story that goes against the ALL MIGHTY SUPREME status quo in comic books I'm all for it, fuck comic book stories hardly go anywhere, everything always goes back to normal because they can't compromise, they have to keep selling shit (insert One More Day joke here), that's really what I hate the most about most comics
Chio Chan Genocide Same here. Fuck the status quo, but I hope any change they do either makes sense or is actually good. I know that's hard to pull off, though. Keeping things the way they are all the time is just much safer and easier for most editors and writers. I think the best stories tend to be either alternate realities or out of continuity; DC's Elseworlds, a ton of Marvel What If's? and more.

I would've preferred him as the black founding member of the Justice league in the new52, rather then shoehorning Cyborg in that role despite him already being a major member of the Titans.
It be like if they reboot the Avengers and they made Storm a founding member of the Avengers. Not just a regular member mind you but a founding member with her presence in the X-men being nonexistent.

I hate the term "corrected" Seeing as how I absolutely loved this version of Parallax. I hope you can find the time to throw out some dramatic readings of this Parallax wreaking havoc on the DC universe.
Hal's relationship with his father sure as hell wasn't this in Johns' interpretation.
the Guardians signed their own death warrent, Hal was just trying to cope. Everyone he knew, loved, and grew up with his entire life: mom, brothers, nieces, nephews, cousin's, high-school girlfriend, who broke up with him no reason, best friend since first grade, roommate from college, if he went, and his beloveded Carrol, all dust. Along with everything he knew and everything he'll miss all because those idiot Guardians couldn't understand emotions.

Nick Mademlis Yeah its pretty old, The Red Lanterns are still pretty new, If Red exsisted back then, then Hal would have had a Red Ring and become Parallax probably differently. And it's this story I actually never knew The Guardians died at one point since their well....immortal since the dawn of time. And its this story again the Guardians of Oa have caused a great enemy. Hal didn't use his ring for personal gain, he tried to use it to bring back his once great city at this point in time but when the Guardians as you know tried to have Hal pretty much impeached as a Green Lantern, Hal understandably flew into a rage. The Guardians have a weird Jedi mindset to them even though they want their officers of the law to use their Will Power.....use too much of it they deem you a threat hell for a short while The Guardians again referring to the Jedi didn't want other GL to Merry and this understandably pissed members off and some became rouge. I think it was during this point they made a new ring class to the Will Ring that those that wielded it pretty much although gave its wearer a mass amount of power it turned off their emotions defeating the purpose of a Will Ring. One thing that's consistant threw out the multiverse is The Guardians except for Ganthet hates Hal Jordan the most out of all their Earthling GL Members

2:42 I couldn’t relate anymore to Hal than I do now. This is how I feel with my deceased mom. I feel like I could never make her proud of me but she was always proud of my middle sister’s accomplishments. So I know exactly how Hal feels.
They really made Hal's story something special with Parallax & the spectre.

I'm so so soooo happy to see this story arc. New 52 Green Lantern is what got me into comics and learning about Hal being Parallax made him my favorite hero. Few of the iconic heroes have played for both sides to the extent of Hal Jordan's run as Parallax.

The writer part of me immediately sees how exactly I would have done Hal's story in just three issues, without turning him into an evil person but still making a huge change for Kyle Rayner to come in and take over. Here's my pitch:
"Set in the aftermath of Coast City's destruction, Hal attempts to bring it back through the power of his ring and begins to relive his past life, while having conversations with people through hindsight. He speaks with his mother, his friends, and a former girlfriend named Jennifer from his college years but avoids his father. His mother and friends are the easiest to speak to. Hal recalls some of his best memories being with his mother during his childhood. Although she is proud of the man he has become, she wishes for him to settle down and raise a family. As for his friends, he recalls the good memories and comes to believe that the superheroes he has fought alongside with, like Oliver Queen, became his surrogate family, which his mother points out is only a substitute for what he might be truly desiring.
After making peace with his mother and friends, he is met by Jennifer, who brings back the regret he has in breaking up with her so suddenly after she helped him recover from his father's death, realizing that those feelings were never truly resolved. He imagines what their life would have been like, seeing an alternate reality where he is a father and husband, making him feel even more regret. However, she points out that if they hadn't broken up, he wouldn't have become Green Lantern. He responds that it did little for Coast City, but she tells him that dwelling on what-ifs never helps and that everyone must live with the consequences, no matter who made them. She forgives him and tells him to do the same for himself before vanishing, telling him her wish is to see him move on.
Finding the strength and will within, Hal finally confronts his father, who berates him for failing to save Coast City and Hal admits that it is his failure, that he can't bring back the dead or live in a fantasy world where everything is alright. He turns the tables on his father and calls him out on ignoring him as a child, or being there for him when he needed a father. Although his father refuses to acknowledge this, Hal forgives him and makes peace, just as the power in his ring runs out.
Afterwards, Hal is contacted by the Guardians, who order him to return to Oa and face disciplinary action. He accepts and is brought before the council, who acknowledge that Hal was going through mental stress and PTSD, so they won't imprison him. Instead, they decide to suspend him from Lantern duties for a little while, take his ring, and return him to Earth. Once there, he pays a visit to Jennifer but from afar, seeing that she has moved on, married, and has kids. He smiles at the family and decides to go back into the military. A little while later, he meets a woman and begins to date. When his suspension is up, Hal refuses the ring when it comes to him, having found peace.
In Los Angeles, Kyle Rayner finishes a date with his girlfiend, Alexandra DeWitt, and returns home to find the ring waiting for him, telling him that he has been chosen to become the new Green Lantern of Sector 2814."

When the editor said they would be doing this in the previous episode, I was super excited. I have never gotten around to read emerald twilight, but I have only heard good things about it.
Worth reading at least once just to see how Hal goes nuts and becomes a villain. Makes his redemption years later in Rebirth worth it even with the retcon regarding Parallax.

Emerald Twilight is one of my all time favorite stories. So good I actually bought it for my best friends birthday as well since he is a green lantern fan. Plus the texture on the cover of the comic is just kind of cool.

Leo Olvera Have you ever read the old GL comics? They're some of the only comics I've ever read, but man he is way overpowered. I think the one I was reading were from the silver age, and he was able to transmute matter, create matter, and read minds. Apparently GLs used to be able to teleport, and mimic different types of radiation.
