    1:56 ??? The funniest shit about straight men saying this phrase (“I’m ok with u being gay as long as u don’t like me”) is that they don’t say that shit to their non-gay friends.
    Ex) yes, a gay friend MAY develop feelings for u, a straight man. But so can any other female friends that u have!! Do u go around to all ur female friends (that u don’t feel attracted to) and tell them “we can be friends as long as u don’t develop feelings for me”?
    The chance for a gay friend to have interest in u is the same for any other female friend u have. (yes, I’m talking about the female friends u think are “ugly” or not “girlfriend-material”).
    And most gay people will not tell their crush that they’re gay! (Unless they are doing a love confession. But if they only cameout to u as gay and didn’t confess their romantic feelings to u, it means they’re not interested in u).

      Totally agree with this. Saying that you are "accepting" of the LGBTQ "as long as it's not done to you (me)" is backhanded tolerance. I hate to point out that that very reaction is its own a form of subverted homophobia that is rather self-centered than empathetic of the (LGBTQ) person who mustered the courage to confess. The irony of allowing our LGBTQ friends "to be who they are" as long as they stay on their lane is not acceptance but sugar-coated, unverbalized apathy and repulsion against them, no matter how subtle or passive.

      I think what the guy is saying to come out to a str guy like him who has been a friend is one thing, but to confess your crush or love on him is another which someone may feel weird and may change the dynamics of the friendship all together. This feeling is the same even for a long time friend of the opposite sex. No matter how much you tried to be nice about rejecting it, it may be awkward after that. That's why most long time friends, whether the person saying it is straight or otherwise, they keep it to themselves for fear of not damaging the easy and good friendship they already shared.

    Honestly, straight people who say “I’m okay with gay people as long as they don’t fall for me” sound so wrong to me- reaching homophobia. If you’re okay with gays then it means you’re open minded as to let them confess and be themselves without limiting what they say or do in front of you.
    If the same sex person confessed to me I’d feel good and thankful since love confessions means that I’m charming to the other person. If not reciprocated then just reject them like you would for any other straight individual/friend.
    It’s not a difficult concept.

      I have to disagree. Regardless the gender, a friend's confession can totally change the dynamic of a friendship. Because you know this person you considered like a bro/sis is conscious because of you. And so do you, since you appreciate them but keeping wonder if whanaver action you make is sending a wrong signal to them...
      So basically, the idea behind this sentence doesn't shock me, maybe more the lack of tact since that's supposed to be logic even with girls as a straight guy, so no need to really emphasize this.

I couldn’t even imagine seeing a couple do that and not feel sad about you not being able to do it in public. Moreover, as an observation I’ve also realized that the only thing keeping lgbtq couples from pda are the looks they might get and possibly kicked from a few restaurants.

      That's an interesting assumption .. really?! I kind of thought the Korean society favors confucian teachings and buddhism as religion, not true? I read in the general press that quite a few christian (pseudo)religions are indeed represented in your country but it's kind of hard to imagine that any western religion, protestantism in particular as you mention on here, would have such a strong grip and what more in politics. So why would any christian religion play any role whatsoever in the Korean social makeup, I wonder ... Korea was not colonized by the West, was it.. nor has it been under American influence for that long ..

    • @roar5853
      @roar5853 Год назад +7

      @@tymeamora It's long to explain, but maybe Christianity is more political than Buddhism in Korea. When Korea was colonized by Japan, it was Christians(there were pastors, nuns, missionaries from the west who came to evangelize) who tried to tell the world the truth of Korean discrimination and massacre by avoiding Japanese surveillance. They also supported Korean independence activists. It was a time when Christians were a minority, but that's why the religion of Korean independence activists is often Christian. Think about how amazing the Bible's Exodus came to Koreans at that time. The Christian god was the god who freed the people who believed in him from slavery. And the people who actually preached the religion took care of orphans and widows, as the Bible says. During the Joseon Dynasty, Catholicism was just a Western philosophy, but Christianity was trusted as a 'just religion' throughout the colonial period. And once again in the dictatorship, Christianity supported Korea's democratic martyrs and contributed to spreading the truth of Korea under the supervision of the dictatorship. Therefore, Christianity is very political in Korea. However, Christian fundamentalism and Confucianism combined to establish a fairly conservative Christian tendency compared to Europe. Think of the very conservative Southern Bible Belt.

    • @tymeamora
      @tymeamora Год назад +1

      @@roar5853 I appreciate your explanation, thanks. Japanese occupation and its aftermath did not actually occur to me, nor would I imagine that's how the western missionaries made their way into Korea (and in Japan itself Christianity doesn't seem to have much relevance, does it?). I can see they were hands on both socially and politically as you're mentioning it. So would you say the LGBT hasn't yet been socially/politically aknowledged in Korea out of religious consciousness? Did Cristian teachings get ingrained so deep in Korean awareness in such a short period of time? I mean, in Europe the initial rejection of homosexuality had been the natural reaction of 2000 years of Christian canons including its promises of eternal doom and purgatory .. Europe has not forgotten the horrors the churches brought upon their people historically in the name of Christ, so when state and church had been finally separated and most European societies became more or less secularized, LGBT has been readily aknowledged as human rights. As a western European I can tell that the vast majority of people, here and now, are really truly not interested in the others' very personal life choices (like who you choose to love, why you're not married or choose not to have children, etc). As I see it, Europeans have learned pretty quickly what's in their own best interests and social hypocrisy was deemed to be detrimental for the greater good.
      Your comparison about the Southern Bible Belt is rather evocative .. sort of scary nonetheless..

      @@tymeamora 설명하기가 어렵네요.. 한가지 말씀드리고 싶은 것은 한국에서의 Catholic, Protestant의 행동 양상의 차이점입니다. 한국 카톨릭은 유럽의 카톨릭과 마찬가지로, 오래된 관념에서 함부로 벗어나기 조심스럽지만, 분명히 성소수자들에 대한 인간적인 존중, 화합을 이루려고 노력하고 있고 이성적인 태도를 가진 채 변화를 받아들이고 있다고 보입니다. 하지만 한국의 개신교는, 애초에 서구의 개신교와는 그 탄생 양상도 현재의 존재 의의도 아주아주 다릅니다. 한국의 가장 부유한 지역에 있는 아주 아주 큰 교회들은, 대부분 사이비 종교에 가깝게 타락한 곳이 많고, 사람들의 맹목적 신앙 혹은 위선을 위한 수단으로서의 신앙을 통해 아주 거대한 돈과 권력을 주무릅니다. 그들이 가진 파워가 성소수자들에 대한 박해로 이어지구요. 또한 애초에 한국 개신교는 기존의 유교와 무속 기복 신앙이 결합되어 만들어졌기 때문에, 또 교육을 많이 받지 못한 지난 시대의 한국에서 그 시대 사람들의 욕구와 사고능력 수준에 맞춰 만들어진 것이기 때문에, 이성과 합리가 통하지 않고 맹목적입니다 그 신앙을 통해 돈을 버는 사람들이 타락한 경우가 아주 많구요.. 아직도, 한국의 지하철에서는 예수를 믿지 않으면 지옥에 간다는 플랜카드를 목에 걸은 채로 낯선 사람에게 교회에 무조건 나오라고 요구하는 사람이 존재하고, 한국 교회에서는 아주 큰 십자가 앞에서 기타를 치고 노래를 부르는 목회자 앞에서 신도들이 눈물을 흘리며 큰 소리로 기도하는 모습이 흔합니다. 유럽에선 상상도 못할 장면이죠. 그들이 그 맹목적인 사고방식을 통해 차별금지법을 막고 성소수자들을 악마화합니다. 정치권에서도 그들이 가진 영향력은 큽니다. 그래서 성소수자들에 대한 일반 시민들의 인식이 세대가 달라짐에 따라 나아져도, 정치권과 관료들, 사법계에서는 변화를 보이지 않습니다 물론 그것은 성소수자에 관해서 뿐 아니라 한국의 거의 모든 사회문화적 요소들의 발전이 부족한 원인이구요. 힘을 가진 자들이 자신들의 이익을 위해 올바른 시대의 변화를 용납하지 않고, 그래서 발전이 너무 부족하고 인간존중의 나라가 아닌 일부 사람들만을 위한 나라라서, 한국이 세계에서 최고로 출산율이 낮은 것입니다.. 한국의 일반 시민들은 갈수록 종교 자체에 대해 냉소적이고 거부감이 커지지만, 정치권, 경제계에 큰 영향력을 미치는 종교인들은 변화를 받아들이지 않아요..

Let's be honest, there is NO country that fully accepts diverse people, and if it took a long time there, it's reasonable to think that it'll also happen in south Korea, since it's already happening, it just needs its time

      On another account, I've lived here in Korea for quite some time and I met a gay Korean friend. It both shocked, disappointed, and pained me to hear from him that he never had a single gay Korean friend himself and that none of his friends know that he is gay. Perhaps he thought that I'd be a safer person to come out to since I am a foreigner, and I appreciate his courage for opening up to me, past culture and language barriers.
      I think this experience is a good little vantage of Korea's general attitude toward the LGBTQ. I hope the change for the good continues!

      @@gabtorres4042I’ve heard similar stories from other foreigners who went to Korea. I find it super sad for the gay Koreans living like that, I wouldn’t be able to. Ofc as foreigners we can’t completely understand what’s it like over there but many those foreigners have said that there seems to be a weird dynamic where the gay Koreans are extremely paranoid to come out when the foreigners themselves experienced little to no discrimination. I’ve hear that there’s Koreans who treat gay foreigners better than gay Koreans but I imagine it can’t be the majority. Tbh I myself feel, especially after hearing these stories and watching this interview, that bcz of the historical unacceptance of homosexuality in Korea many Koreans are too scared to come out even when the environment around them would otherwise be relatively safe or even supporting, resulting in less lgbt visibility (so many Koreans have said they’ve never had a gay friend) which just creates a feed back loop. Ofc I’m not saying they ought to come out, it’s their decision, it’s just what I’ve noticed. Thankfully despite this, there’s a lot of progress being done fast

S.Korea is actually one of, if not the fastest growing in acceptance rate within the last 20 years towards the lgbtq community ( it actually doubled and has gone to to the 40%-tile )... and this was most likely greatly increased by an entire old gen passing and a new gen becoming the adults of modern day S.korea, so believe it or not ( Just like the woman said about china) Koreans are a lot more accepting than people would think... it's simply not discussed much and is in a way taboo, or keep it quiet type of topic.... but in general a good amount of them either accepting or simply don't mind the community at all, truely the only thing holding them back from progressing much further then what they are now is the remaining older gen ( whether it be in personally family households... work-wise... politics wise )

      @@rsdxxxx I wasn't referring to the act, but the fact that it simply just having the attraction itself was enough for society to view you as deviant. In other words, until recent times, the attraction toward same sex and children - without anything more - were BOTH (generally) viewed as mental perversions. There are people who have never been attracted to any person older than twelve, same as how some people who have never been attracted to someone of the opposite sex. I kid you not, there are actually people who identify as non-practising paedophiles who advocate against the stigma attached to paedophiles because though they are sexually attracted to children, they have never hurt anyone or participated in the abuse or exploitation of kids.
      In view of the fact that there are people who though sexually attracted to children have chosen to live a life of abstinence (just like how some who are only attracted to their sex choose a life of celibacy), my question then is what would be your basis of deeming such a person - who, through no fault of his, is only attracted to children (being born that way) - mentally perverse, when he has never acted out his/her desires and thus the issue of non-consensual sex, manipulation or harming a child never arisen? Is it because the attraction to children is unnatural or would be accepting of such a person's desires as far as he/she is not (directly or indirectly) hurting any child? if you lean towards the former, how is this different from being attracted to the same sex? The reason society now embraces homosexuality is because you can't help you who you're attracted to? How is this different from a paedophile who can't help his desires - moreso when it is not translating to the abuse of any child?

    It's great to see responses have changed towards gay/bi cis people. But this is yet another video showing people don't know about the rest of the community. I would like to point out that it is a much more diverse population than people realize and yes, there are straight individuals in lgbt+. In future, I would like to see more awareness around trans, intersex, GNC, asexual members of the community. Goes to show how much less progress has been made for these subgroups.

Don't tell me they are disgusting if they get close to you as a dog suddenly talking and telling you out of sudden they are in fk love with you?? As long as they are given the same respect as any other human being and they are not discriminated against, I do not see the problem. So people who talk about homophobia because people do not adhere to their ideals please stop. Everyone has their choices in life, everyone crosses what they want. Everyone has their culture everyone has their way of life. Let's just give each other mutual respect. People are not obliged to accept what you do so everyone must already understand this. I'm black and with racism and I don't care if someone loves me or not I just demand the respect that owed me that’s it.

      The problem nowadays is that so many groups are becoming increasingly more tribalistic. Echo chambers form, unwarranted self-righteousness grows, dogma becomes spewed. Before long, they get so wrapped up in their soapbox that they start complaining about feigned sleights.
      Too many groups these days think they own exclusivity rights over activism. Over change. These people are delusional. Being opposed to a group suffering from tribalism does not mean you are against a particular cause. They're just too wrapped up in their own narrative to realize they can no longer see the forest from the trees and are unable to separate themselves from their own biases.
      The kind of change they speak of will impact generations. No such change can be enacted based of the fleeting emotions of biased people. It can only come after careful and thoughtful deliberation based on facts, logic, and reason. To do otherwise would be to be socially irresponsible.
