"Hey, I'm gonna take a quick second and send a special message out to my friends, Aaron and Mickey... Guys, time to get back together and start playing again. That's from me, here at Blossom. WEEN, one of my all time favorite bands, time to get back together and start playing again" - Trey Anastasio 8/7/2015, after finishing "Roses are Free" durish Phish's first set at Blossom Music Theatre. TRUTH, TREY!
Yeah and when you watch the 2016 bonaroo performance that's on RUclips poor Gene looks 30 years older than here even though it was only 14. I didn't recognize him at first. Shit ages you
I'm really interested in what the guy at the end of the video is about to say but the video cuts off. Does anyone know where the rest or the whole show is?
both phish, and ween can both kill, and destroy this song. i saw ween murder their own tune (roses are free ) a couple summers ago in bend oregon. I love them both, but this tune plays itself if the mood is right. no matter who the band. mama still dresses in black.
Ghoopty The fist line is a tiny bit, but guitars and chorus and everything else is completely different, just because it's a small punchy verse doesn't mean that is it a copy. Check out some Pop music, that's were all the copying is going on
I still feel like they based their song around the melody from "Boogie On Reggae Women", and yes, I won't deny that there's infintely worse plagiarism happening in pop music (& film) these days. There's very little originality anymore, it seems.
I have never been to a Phish show that they have played it. Phish’s version of the song is great though! Deaner and Mike Gordon look like they are related!
I don't care what anyone says about Ween. These guys are killer in the studio and a real treat live (they can play just about any song by anyone ever written). This band has done things that very few groups can claim. Smart and hardworking jokesters at their best. love these guys
Drove 24 hours to the festival. Set up a 10 x 20 car canopy. We got called Amish Tent Builders. Some dude next to us trades Heineken for Labatts Blue because he thought the were micro brews. One of the greatest weekend of my life. Great adventure, great drugs, I had a backpack cooler that held a case of beer and kept it ice cold. Snuck it in to every show all weekend
Why is most of Ween's live footage not of this quality? You have this, then you have the Chicago concert from 2003, and most other footage is either from the crowd or it's 50 - 100 feet away.
It costs tens of thousands of dollars to get pro shot video of a concert on this level. It costs zero dollars for bill schmillman to shoot a song on his iPhone. That’s why.
I don't think she was talking about Ween. That footage seems like it's from some random interview at the festival. In 2002 Bonnaroo was indeed a jam band festival and all of the bands she names headlining are jam bands. So she was actually on point.
This was such a great show! My first time seeing Ween in '02 and didn't know much about them. The version of Spinal Meningitis they did creeped me the f out.
I've been a Ween fan for like 7 years but have only ever listened to records. However I honestly have never watched a live performance until now. I never, EVER imagined that they would have been ranked into the Jam-band arena. Mind = blown, but not in a bad way. Only sad, sick individuals could ever not like Ween.
Yeah they're really not a jam band, so much as Phish covered them so they were offered a lot of Festival gigs and we're happy to take the paychecks I'm sure ;) certainly capable of jamming but improvisation was pretty rare in most of their tunes. Some exceptions (lmlyp)
just remembering being there makes me glad to be alive. no matter what my mood. i can always count on times like these to bring me back home. ahh so much better. thank you!!!
I get so fucking pissed when people credit this song to Phish. They're both some of my favorite bands, but you could pretty well tell it wasn't an orignal Phish composition if they actually listened to the song structure. This is much more tightly wound than any Phish track, at least in a live setting.
Dude, seriously it always happens. I love Ween and Phish, and they're totally different. Enough dick measuring contests over your favorite band please. It's okay to enjoy both.
Almost everything about the band is sarcastic, so it makes sense the comment is as well...which means he thinks they're the opposite of 'worst', which they are! So it works!
I fell asleep to TAB at Bonnaroo 2002! It was too much, I sprained my ankle, this was one of Housers last shows also! Good time but when you jump in a cow trough after being crammed in a humid ass field it gets old. If you have an RV completely worth it.
Anyone here the Phish over version live. I know Phish heads who only heard of Ween through that song became fans and attended live shows. I know that Gene and Dean Ween thought the new fans that Phish created were a new type of fan entirely. They are not a hiipy band really. They like dark song lyrics. But these new fans so high on acid or e or something hallucinogenic probably never realized the difference between Ween and Phish are when it comes to the mood of a song. But yeah I also started to listen to them more after Quebec came out. And when I heard the last half of Quebec I realized if they took there songs more seriously like they did there they may have been the new Gratefull Dead or Pink Floyd.
They're technically playing the part, Gene just isn't singing on it. On the studio version, the guitar solo actually does continue this way behind Gene's vocals. But I actually like the way they do it live better, it makes for a nicer ending.
I just can't get over how fantastic the guitar is in the whole album. Chocolate and Cheese has to be one of my favorite albums I've ever listened to.
It's a good one. It's a good one.
Wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment. C&C is pure magic.
mhm mhm mhm it is defenetly up there i love the album
C&c is definitely in my top 5
I approve this comment.
hell yes I just had to watch it twice I love their style

That's pretty much all I ever think about

And now they are on tour again
Thank boognish
+Steve Meyer I think of this all the time as well. 2-3 months later, announces tour.

Love Geners gold top 😍
its crazy how in ever video of Ween they are smoking cigs, even during the songs!
they usually play for 3+ hours - no smoke breaks.
@@mj.l just funny how literally they adopted the rock and roll persona

Eclectic geniuses
Ween!!!
This is poppin
but... Why can't Ween and Phish both be good bands? I don't give a fuck about which is objectively better, both bands are awesome.
100%
I'm really interested in what the guy at the end of the video is about to say but the video cuts off. Does anyone know where the rest or the whole show is?
Look up "Number 2" by Colonel Claypools Bucket of Bernie Brains on here.
Wow.
The band Whitney took notes!
i like the phish flag flying proudly. a great song played by two sweet bands? who could ask for more
To Melanie Harrison

i always expect tweezer to start at the end
R.I.P. WEEN!!!
it's like prince but cooler
I came to get brown
Great song, but it's a rip-off of "Boogie On Reggae Woman" (Stevie Wonder).
+Ghoopty Sounds nothing like it
The melody in the verse of both songs are exactly the same.
Ghoopty The fist line is a tiny bit, but guitars and chorus and everything else is completely different, just because it's a small punchy verse doesn't mean that is it a copy. Check out some Pop music, that's were all the copying is going on

you're a jaded pretentious asshat to have such shit opinion on a youtube video. Follow the vibe and enjoy...nothing more, nothing less :)
I remember that before they started the song they said something like "This is a Phish song". Got a laugh.
I have actually never been to a Phish show that they havent playeds roses are free. And yes i know that its a ween song.
Phish has always sucked. Ween just started to. ruclips.net/video/jvozB6nFO9M/видео.html

The boog is immortal

This band has everybody’s respect. They have a satirical sense of humor but don’t be fooled, these guys are serious musicians.
Check out their cover of Zeppelins "All Of My Love" huge testament to their abilities.
Ween - the Rosetta Stone of music.
Well said!
Thank you, ween. You taught me not to trust my florist. That is the best advice I have ever had in my life.
Push The Little Daises is even more explicit. Gardening porn at its best :)
yeah fuck those flower pushers

This is from the Bonnaroo DVD

From his iPhone... In 2003
@@vegetaAcheetah literally no one said anything about iPhones existing in 2003 🤦♂️nice try though asshole
I've seen Ween live like 6 or 7 times dating back to 1996 and that's the best version of that song I've heard. Pretty damn awesome
I saw them last night and this song stood out. It was awesome to hear live.
I really hope they play it live if I ever get to see them

Too cleannn
Back when Bonnaroo had good lineups.
They had Primus a few years ago I think
Troof
@@logandogan272 Oysterhead was supposed to be there this year
Defenitely better back in the day but they still come correct every year just not as good. Ive been rooin since the 2nd one
I went to 01 n 02, the first 2 anyway. From Nebraska but lived in Tampa at the time. I too am in bugaha
The lead singer is handsome, I had no idea what they looked like until a few days ago & I've known their music for many years.
Fat Gener is best Gener. You should look him up now, he looks nothing like this anymore.
Young Gener 🌱 is even better but I also think Deaner is equally attractive 😅🥴
The girl at the end has no idea what she's talking about.
I think she actually does, it's a jam band dude XD jk I don't know
I don't think she was talking about Ween. That footage seems like it's from some random interview at the festival. In 2002 Bonnaroo was indeed a jam band festival and all of the bands she names headlining are jam bands. So she was actually on point.
I always cringe when I hear the term “jam band” Never liked it then, and I don’t like it now.
Ween songs are the farthest thing from jam bandery. They are well written and well thought out. These guys are smart musicians.
She is exactly the type I avoid at shows.
*all hipster fans of ween make fun of hippes* *dosent realize the keyboard player is wearing a jerry garcia tshirt*
And the bass player plays for Joe Russo's Almost Dead!!
@Shalom Absalom Not to sure about that
Ew. I hate the word hipster

This was such a great show! My first time seeing Ween in '02 and didn't know much about them. The version of Spinal Meningitis they did creeped me the f out.
Why they wanna see my spine?
It was hot that day as the whole thing was. It rained during this set like a little sun shower then Phil and Bobby came on then Trey
Better than Coldplay.

You do know that they only started playing it live, in this style, after Phish did? They credit Phish for this. hahahah

No. They will not...
Ween owns sorry Phish
Jeff Jackson I always hated the phish version of Roses are free.
I love Phish, but ween does own
Somebody in the scaffolds is wearing the Natural Born Killers shirt I also owned. I was sooo into ween and NBK in 1995. Fun times.
"It's the big hole that people traditionally threw the dead into" 6:36 .. That's how you catergorise Ween 😂

actually this is Ween's song. Phish liked it and play it.
They're so young.

I really laughed at how Killer Mike sampled this for his ADIDAS song
Why is everything suddenly 10 years ago 🥵
I was there. Not a big Ween fan but this was a nice moment
Chocolate & Cheese is a MASTERPIECE! Every song is fantastic. I still cover “What Deaner Was Talkin’ About” when I play solo gigs!
Almost everything about the band is sarcastic, so it makes sense the comment is as well...which means he thinks they're the opposite of 'worst', which they are! So it works!
i love the close up shot with both boys on the guitar
Crunchy tunes brah, jam bands, jam bands, jam bands...
I like the dead and phish but holy fuck people make me mad.
