    I am very grateful for your work on these Bantam engine assembly videos Dean. They are clear, detailed and explicit and make it possible for people like me, with only limited mechanical knowedge & experience, to undertake similar tasks. You & Bones are my no 1, go to, experts in Bantam building

      That's very kind of you Gaz. I enjoy doing it and I'm glad that it helps.

    Up until now , I would never of dreamt of stripping gearbox down and rebuilding it . However , after watching your video , I am now confident that I could do it . Many thanks for an excellent tutorial .👍👍

      Tony, that's kind of you to say. The Bantam is a good one to start with. Best wishes, Dean.

    Hi Dean, nicely done and explained. Congratulations on the 100 subs! The new mill looks good, exciting times at Retromeccanica! Cheers, Jon

      Thanks Jon, the mill needs a good clean up and a bit of attention but it saved me a few bob. I've got plans for it so it should be a useful addition. Thanks for watching. Dean.

    Great Job Dean, and congrats on the 100 subs, and a new milling machine too. Great camera work and explanation.

    I really enjoined that. Not easy to film close ups of assembly operations with basic equipment, so well done. Always nice to see you using Grandad's tools. The milling machine is a great addition and I am sure we will be seeing it a lot more. Another mod could be power feed. Nearly 100 subscribers now. Only another 99,901 to go. Looking forward to the next filum. Like.

      I use Grandad's tools whenever I can. They have never let me down. I have a spanner that is perfect for draining the Bantam gearbox with the engine in the frame. I think he probably did the same with it.

    Great work Dean. Very good idea to change out the gearchange spring as they are notorious for breaking. The loctab washers are on my hitlist to manufacture this year hopefully, Like you I hate re-using them. But there's press dies to make etc.........You know how it goes! Lovely little milling machine too. That should clean up nicely.

      Thanks Tony, hopefully I will reap the benefits of changing those bits now, rather than have to split the bugger again. The mill will definitely be a useful addition. Cheers, Dean.

    Is that a Yamaha banner over the door. I want to see the bike running. Congrats on the milling machine. Sweet.

      Yes, you can get the banners on eBay (UK). I'm looking forward to hearing the bike run again.

    Nice video. I restored a d14/4 about 28 years ago and put 80 miles on the clock back then. It has been sitting beside a radiator in my workshop ever since but has gear oil leak from crankcase seal. This video might give me the inspiration to strip the engine again and try to fix the leak. Philip.

      @@retromechanicalengineer Thanks, Any suggestions of what type / make of gasket paste to use.

    • @retromechanicalengineer
      @retromechanicalengineer  2 года назад

      @@philipturner5100 I like to use Stag Wellseal. If the crankcase halves are nice and flat without any chunks missing you will get a good seal. It's worth lapping them on a sheet of glass with fine grinding paste. It doesn't go rubbery so won't break off and start floating around your engine.

    hi Dean could you tell me how you sorted the gear selector rod mine doesn't look to be lining up

    • @retromechanicalengineer
      @retromechanicalengineer  Год назад

      Which bit isn't lining up Alan? The selector fork on the end of the gear change shaft?

    • @alanbrown1563
      @alanbrown1563 Год назад

      @@retromechanicalengineer yes mate like yours

    • @retromechanicalengineer
      @retromechanicalengineer  Год назад

      @@alanbrown1563 I would check the spring on the back of the fork, make sure it's on the right way and not damaged. Also, is your selector plate fitted properly? The dog is properly seated into the channel on the pinion? Is the selector plate pin loose or slack in its hole? You can re-peen them or weld them if they are very loose. I also added another spring cup under the selector plate spring to tighten things up. It's an old dodge but it does work. I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it.
      Best wishes, Dean.

    Hi Dean, where did you find the milling machine? I’m in York desperately trying to find one in same condition as yours!

    • @retromechanicalengineer
      @retromechanicalengineer  2 года назад +1

      Hey Ross, thanks for subscribing. It took me a long time to find the mill, watching eBay and the Lathes UK website. It was eBay in the end. I was ideally looking for the Myford version. It needed a lot of cleaning but I think it will do the job for my needs. Good luck with your hunt! Dean.

    Wow that is a three sped what is the top end speed?

    • @retromechanicalengineer
      @retromechanicalengineer  2 года назад

      Yes three speeds. Later bikes had four. Top speed is around 55mph. They were just what was needed to get post war Britain moving. Getting people to work economically.

    Nice job done. don't supposed you know how the gears would be inserted for a trials bantam. I've asked others but they just say "the opposite way to the road bike gearing" which isn't helpful.

    • @retromechanicalengineer
      @retromechanicalengineer  2 года назад

      I don't think it's just a matter of swapping gears around if you want a true trials box, although I have to confess that I'm not sure myself. You can fit D1 or D3 entire clusters if you could find them, which have lower ratios than a D7. I have the gear ratio charts if you wish to email me, I'll scan them. There is also the Bantam club forum, a number of people on there have built trials bikes.
      I'm interested in trials/green-laning myself, but I have to say I've found it quite difficult to find certain information myself.
      Best of luck, Dean.
