      ??? You must be 20 yrs old or younger.. Dave excels on drums. He is definitely not a guitarist. Although he's ok at guitar and songwriting, his talent really shows in his drum playing. He is exceptional when given a couple wooden sticks. The only reason he's been able to thrive is because he was in Nirvana and is actually ok at songwriter power chord type stuff. But in reality if he was never in Nirvana he would be thrown in with the millions of dudes trying to make music with their simple power chord progressions and not be taken seriously. I love Dave and Nirvana and I always will. But I truly believe this. Foo Fighters were good for their first 2 albums when Dave still had passionate things to say. Then the fame and all that shit just dissolved him into another Axl type rockstar. I think Kurt would be disgusted. But he knew where things were going and decided to check out early.

      ***** couldn't agree more & this was Kim being mellow....Sonic Youth have inspired too many bands to list! They were the one's that changed every guitar string around, spent so much time distorting every sound, so much so no one could ever do a cover of their songs....

      Kadin G. Her voice is suited to the band she sang in. Listen to Drunken Butterfly by Sonic Youth. If she had a popstar hitting-all-the-right-notes voice then it would sound awful.
      Her voice is fuckin gnarly.

    • @ali_s93
      @ali_s93 9 лет назад +13

      ***** I'd say the best performance here was by Kim Gordon because she didn't try to sound like Kurt and made the song her own. No disrespect, but Joan Jett was embarrassing (like an old lady trying to mimic Kurt at a karaoke). That frizzy blonde on Lithium was a desperate Kurt wannabe and Lorde's overacting was just unbearable.
      By far the best part of this whole thing was Dave Grohl, he fuckin murdered that drumkit - I could listen to a skeleton track of just him pounding away on the drums for hours.

    • @Oliverlduffy
      @Oliverlduffy 9 лет назад +5

      I mostly agree with you on that, except I wouldn't call St.Vincent a Kurt wannabe, if you listen to her music, its nothing like Nirvana and she doesn't have Kurts self-destructive, careless personality.
      Her music, for me, is A+ but it doesn't sound like anything Kurt's ever made.
      But holy shit yeah Dave is a beast

  • @RastaSaiyaman
    @RastaSaiyaman 8 лет назад +49

    Okay for all of you complaining about their choice of singers, let me put you straight:
    Joan Jett
    - Punk legend, not only was she part of the Runaways and did she have a very prolific solo career but she's also the reason why Pat is on stage there, he and Darby Crash started the Germs because of the Runaways. They also had Joan Jett produce their album which is regarded one of the seminal American hardcore albums of all times.
    Kim Gordon
    - Was the one who brought Nirvana to attention of the DGC label, she also took Nirvana on tour to support her own band Sonic Youth, who as Kurt admitted was his favorite band. She and Kurt were also close friends and she produced Hole's album "Pretty on the inside" and appeared in the Video for "Doll parts" as a tribute to Kurt
    Annie Clarke
    - Is among the new wave of Geek rockers. having toured with David Byrne of the talking heads, which again was a band Kurt was heavily into.
    Lorde
    - Much like Annie Clarke, Lorde is from the new wave of geek rock, don't forget that Kurt encouraged the geek crowd: the wallflowers, the nerds, the ones who were bullied in school.
    Stop the bullshit here, Kurt would have LOVED this show and what the ladies did in their performances.

    The irony of people criticizing grunge legends for not sounding "good enough" while covering the epitome of grunge from the era they helped create. Grunge music was anti clean/perfect playing and singing at its core. It was a revolt against the over polished music of the 80's. This was something Kurt would have appreciated.

    Well, i'm 8 yrs late to this video lol, but it's important to underline that this seemed to be a tribute to Kurt from the perspective of women rockstars. And as such, sung as they do/did in their respective bands. So in that regard, it's expected that they sing the songs in a way that's not necessarily imitating Kurt's voice .
    And in that regard, it's something i really approve of. Especially considering that it's a good way to make female fans feel represented.

    Pretty sure that Kurt would have loved Kim's singing here, and the fact that they were friends makes this meaningful to watch. Sonic Youth helped Nirvana get their first big break with DGC and took them out on tour. They were kindred spirits. Kim clearly channelled Kurt's weirder, confrontational side that can be heard on songs like Negative Creep, Beeswax, Hairspray Queen and Tourette's. If you don't appreciate this, you really don't get Nirvana.

    Just my two cents worth:
    Joan Jett did a good job of Smells Like Teen Spirit. I liked it and would've rocked to it had I been in the audience.
    Kim Gordon did an unusual rendition of Aneurysm....perhaps not her natural performance and possibly attempting to emulate Kurt?
    The third singer (sorry I cannot remember her name) did a commendable job of Lithium and sounded pretty good in my opinion.
    I thought Lourde butchered All Apologies unfortunately and sounded like a bad karaoke performance you'd find at a friend's party.
    In saying that, I personally loved seeing Dave, Krist and Pat playing together again. With 30 years of experience behind them now, I thought they sounded slick, polished and solid. It makes me wonder how awesome Nirvana would sound now if Kurt was still alive.
    It's all speculation of course but Kurt was a feminist and I think he would've been very pleased to see an all female lineup cover his songs too.
    Lastly, while there are obviously some real Nirvana fans in the crowd. There also appears to be a bunch there who don't seem to know what the fuck they're watching. I'd love to have been there even if just to see the remaining Nirvana members playing together again. That would've been awesome.
